Too bad we didn't have smart cell phones, when I lived in Bamberg for nearly three years, back in the early '70's, while serving in the US Army's 2/2 Armored Cavalry Regiment H Company M60A1 main battle tanks ... Prior to the reemerging of Germany, we were responsible for border patrol in the region of Colberg... The wide fenced border was a double fenced area filled with assorted mines, I was told... We'd watch the East German guards in their towers, as they watched us in our guard shacks... We'd also drive several kilometers along the border for the same reasons... I must have walked through that tunnel of the old city hall on the water way, hundreds of times... The buildings, fountains & statuary, the smell of roasting bratwurst, the eating outside of castle's, the glockenspiel in the town square, the October fest, the travel to many cities by train, are amongst the memories that still fill my dream's at night... I must say, I am proud that Bamberg is now a World Heritage Site... And that, I'm also proud to say, those were the best years of my lifetime, living there ...

Du hast einen sehr wichtigen Ort vergessen, der leider nur begrenzt Besuchern öffentlich zugänglich ist. Das Heidelberger Ionenstrahl-Therapiezentrum (HIT). Es handelt sich dabei um die weltgrößte Protonen- und Schwerionen Anlage zur hochgradig präzisen Bestrahlung von Krebspatienten. Ich befinde mich derzeit dort in Behandlung finde diese Medizintechnik absolut faszinierend. Ich wünsche mir eines Tages für alle Krebspatienten, die eine Bestrahlung benötigen, die Möglichkeit von dieser Technologie gebrauch machen zu können. Noch ist sie sehr kostspielig und völlig überdimensioniert. Aber wie mit jeder technischen Entwicklung, bin ich zuversichtlich, dass sich dies eines Tages ändern wird.
