I'm doing something, but I don't know what - let's find out together.
After 15 years of living my plan B, I quit corporate life to pursue my plan A - professional musicianship. It's a long story. I started this channel and my IG account (@montanajones.music) to share my journey with the world - both the proud, shining moments and their vulnerable underbellies. I call it #learningoutloud. Others have (politely) called it brave.
I'm not afraid to be a beginner. I've done so many things in 33 years that I know the impossible can be done, and that I'm stubborn - and crazy - enough to do it.
And everyone's gotta start somewhere, right?

Nightflyer - Allison Russell - bass & vocal cover #music #bass #cover
Hey there, welcome to my bass and vocals cover of Allison Russell's song Nightflyer. I don't own this song, the music, etc.
I recorded over her vocals for a reason - well, for two, one being that they're training wheels for me as I continue to learn to sing - she's an unbelievable vocalist and person. This song is very much her story, and rather than cover her up, I wanted to add my voice to hers.
I had the incredible luck and privilege to attend a panel on her career at the National Museum of African American Music. I'd visited Nashville on a whim, trying to deal with (read: run from) my own trauma, and stopped into the museum looking for Ella Fitzgerald. By the way, that museum is unparalleled - probably the only thing worth seeing on Broadway in Nashville.
Anyway, I saw that there was gonna be a panel about her that same evening. The only thing I'd ever heard her in was the song Wildflower and Barley she did with Hozier, but my interest was piqued. I spent a long time as an academic and have been a panelist before, so I was game - but I was NOT prepared for the fact that she'd be there. I got to hear her tell her story and play some of her music and it took my breath away. Her life was so different from mine, but sexual assault had shaped her from a young child, as it had me. I was in Nashville trying to escape the shadow of it. I had never heard anyone speak so bluntly and in such an empowering way about it, and it was freeing. Quite literally life-changing. Afterwards, I got to meet her and make a sobbing ass of myself. I'll never forget the experience and what I learned from her strength and light. I listened to her entire discography the next day on the way home from Nashville, and it's beautiful.
So here's to women who empower women, who don't let their past define them but instead use it to refine them and shine a light into the darkness that shame creates for survivors.

Got a clip from our 9/30/24 gig. This is Take Flight, an original Fearless Dave & The Tsunamis song. We were jammin at Lamplighter Lounge in Memphis and having a great time. The drummer isn't our regular drum king - he had an emergency and had to duck out last minute, and we asked the drummer from the previous act, The Contradictions, for his assistance, and he jumped in with both feet. Hey long time no see! how have you been i want you to know you have people that love you and wish you well so... have a good day!🎉🎉🎉😊😊😊
You're amazing, thank you so much 💙💙 keep doing your thing out there, I love hearing from you!
Are you using your in ears?
Yeah! Looks like whacky than the headphones but still lets me hear what I'm playing since it's going through a preamp into the computer
You go, girl!
Thank you!! I was very into it 😂
Keys to loud but great job
Thanks :) this is just a live take, not mixed or mastered. I was in the monitor room with the keyboardist, which is why they're louder - they're patched through the board and audible in the room. The drummer and guitarists were in other rooms, so they're not as loud, and I was in a DI. It's just a raw clip for a progress report 🫡
I may not have bass face, but my god I have singing face 😭
😅lol A really beautiful song though. Well done 😀
Thank you! I tried my best, I think it gets a little better every time. I'm a very harsh critic of myself, so it's a struggle to even get myself to record vocals
@@montanajonesmusic yo do fine, just keep your eyes open, when you close your eyes thats when you go with the beat and cant tell what your face is doing. its completely normal you got this.
Thank you fam 💙🦇
i remember a year ago when you were just starting, you have gotten so good in a year im really impressed. keep up the good work, you also have an amazing singing voice.
Ahhhhhh you were one of my *very* first subscribers!! I remember your username. Thanks for sticking around for so long and for your encouragement - it's been a wild ride and if it wasn't for people like you helping keep my spirits up, I might have given up a long time ago 💙 Thanks a billion and keep being rad :)

Nice! Is that a Fender custom?😀🤘🎸
Thank you! It's a Squier Bronco - the only customization about it is a red lace sensor pick up!
Nice bass line!!
😊
Better 😀 What software are you using again?
I'm recording the video with my phone camera and audio through Amplitube. Then I convert the video to a .mov through a website, and put them both into DaVinci Resolve and squish em together 😭
@eMontanaJones Amplitube is a modeler for the most part...not really an audio capture software. There are several other free softwares that might work better for you as far as audio. The trick is to capture the audio at a nominal volume (not clipping), so you can then process the recording after the fact with a clean signal. Sometimes, just capturing the audio at a louder volume is actually making thing worse because the signal is too loud and distorting. This particular recording is an example. You can hear the bass clipping and distorting because your are capturing the performance with too much gain (volume). Try record it quite and then use another free mixing software to boost the gain and eq. Hope that helps! 😀 I am always here to help if I can...been recording on a budget for 30 years
@eMontanaJones very nice!!😀🤘🤘❤️
Thank you friend 🙏💙
That’s an awesome bass line! 😀
Hey thanks! I have no idea what to do with it, but I like it too
I can’t hear it🥲

@Rhys-fj9uh always 💙🤘
, nice 👌
Thank you 💙
Sound is WAY better today! That’s almost a guitar part, I dig it, seems like you could put another bass part playing something slower underneath it
That's what I was thinking - multi-tracking the bass part or having a heavy left-hand playing a bassline on keys. I got the volume up a bit post recording, and I think that's helped! Fingers crossed that it's sustainable - I'm glad to hear you noticed a difference 😄
Hey sis. Do you really want opinions? What you are playing is really not a bass line so much as it is a melody line. Imagine that while riff being played on piano...now ADD a rhythmic bass line to it. Just a suggestion. Bass can be melodic yes, but what else musically would you add to this IF this was the bass line?? Only my opinion, but you need to be challenged as a bassist in writing with other people. Don't go solo in your musical creativity 😉 Also, when recording...capture at a higher volume. That bass has a tone...find it at a higher gain! Been following you now for over a year...you are advancing for sure...but i honestly believe you would benefit as a bassist by being a bassist in a group...not these solo videos. I mean this politely...not in a judging way. Rock on sis!
Thank you for replying! I play in a band - I joined in June after an audition. They've been playing for about 6 years, mostly originals. I have a few videos and shorts on my channel of us performing. We're working on some new songs for an upcoming release, so definitely some group writing. I wasn't envisioning this piece as the actual low-end bassline so much as a melodic part that happens to be played on a bass guitar. But wanting to ultimately be a solo vocalist and bassist, I aim to define my style and sound outside of traditional bass parts and push the envelope a bit on my terms. So I was thinking maybe some left hand keys to hold down a bassline or another bass part underneath, as Hugh suggested above. As far as the audio goes, I'm working with what I've got. I can't afford A/V editing software, so for now, it's the best it's gonna get until I can. I can only get the volume on the bass so high without significant clipping impacting the sound quality!
@@montanajonesmusic ah ok, I see the live vids now! As far as software, there are some great free ones out there. Audacity, Alberton, Garage Band, etc. Universal Audio (Luna) is REALLY good! Assuming you already have an audio interface :)
Sounds good but is super low volume
One day I'm gonna get it figured out. The Focusrite is great, it's just a lot of setup to get clips recorded with and even with it I still can't seem to get the audio right.
@@montanajonesmusic I often double the bass track (copy the 1st track, paste on 2nd track, then bounce them together) makes it much beefier. Also: Aguilar Tone Hammer is very useful

it was, but iirc they brought it down after recording to make it sound like a bass
@kevinpunk2006 Hence the hint 😉
@skykatkat is on it, either the guitar was drop tuned or it's mixed to be lower (or both; I was about 14 when this song came out 😳)
Everyone knows this
@@montanajonesmusicstandard tuning and using an octave pedal
I think next you should play over some drum loops. And: Turn that bass up!
I love playing over drum tracks. I'm still struggling with audio but it's getting better; at least now it's stereo ;) now to get it louder, clearer, and to learn to record over a track
@@montanajonesmusic can help you w the audio, what usb interface and recording software do you use?
I use a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and OBS as the software to capture audio & video
@@montanajonesmusic those are excellent. I assume you’re using the high-Z inputs.

Hi, in case you didn’t realized, it seems that your audio is recorded in mono. I’m listening thru headphones, and I’m sure I’m missing some of the playing as I’m partially death from the left ear.

Lol trust me I know, my Sisyphean task is trying to figure out how to adequately record bass audio while also recording video
@eMontanaJones I actually like the way it sounds here. maybe I can hear it better cuz I'm wearing earbuds
@-JimRice- I appreciate it, I wish it was more audible!! I turn the amp up, but then everything in the room rattles when I play and that's just worse. I gotta figure out a better system but I'm not a big A/V type of gal
If your amp has EQ, you could dry boosting the 1000 - 2000Hz frequency range a little for clarity. And perhaps the 2000 - 6000Hz to give it some presence. Don’t boost these by much, just enough to enhance the audibility. Ignore this if you’ve already tried it.
Are those ranges the mids? I have a Fender Rumble 40, its eq is pretty basic (bassic?). Like bass, low mids, high mids, and treble ranges basic. I need to hunt down the things that are rattling in the room and fix that, too. I have a focusrite Scarlett, but it's apparently incompatible with Samsung (which is the brand of my phone I film everything with), and therefore it hard pans the sound to the right.
This is really coming along.
Thank you! This was an old one
Do you have the original song playing in your headphones?
Nope! I was listening to myself through a monitor
You're videos are always awesome in one form or another, its great to see your growth and learning, its been a while since I've played bass, you make me want to pick it up again. Thank you for sharing your journey!
Thank you! I hope it inspires people to pick up their dreams and run with them
On those last four 1/4 notes try playing the open D string at the same time. The D should be played in unison with the melody. After you do it, you will hear it
Oohh okay thank you!! 💙💙
Longview duh

Dayuum!! You have such a gorgeous voice.😍🥰
Thank you :) it's certainly a work in progress
Lemmy’s cover was great
Stand by me :)
🤩 You're a hero
I would suggest that you figure out if you can find some of the notes in your riff on the next 2 strings "down", so you don't have to move up the neck as much, improving playing speed and accuracy.
I appreciate the tip :) to get in the right octave, I couldn't get the low F anywhere else than first fret on E. And I didn't like the timber of the open A, so I'm playing it on the fifth fret mindfully. Same for the C - I wanted the better bend at the 8th fret of E.
@@montanajonesmusic (This might be a controversial take, but...) Don't worry about it. Everybody's sound, especially when starting out on an instrument, isn't great. Just keep getting comfortable with the instrument, and eventually you will find your sound.
