My Art Experiment with AI

In this video I explain how I made artificial images by training a Generative Adversarial Network on a dataset of my own hand-made collage art. I also describe how this affected my art practice. Collages are a quick way to get into that flow state and train your eye to when things 'feel right'. I found a few of these videos that I made a while back but never posted. I’m still making collages today- they are great warms ups it’s really fun to watch a composition come together. #art #collage #papercollage #dailyart #torontoartist

Using Paint to Collage

I trained a GAN!

I'm exploring GAN technology to create a Digital Twin that generates collage images for posting on social media. How will this technology learn to mimic my decisions and design choices? Could it create virtual collages that I would like? What will I learn about my own patterns when creating art? Coming soon to Instagram @reb.ott Hello! I’m an artist living in Toronto, Canada. Since 2018 I’ve been posting daily collages to Instagram. I use all types of paper, including photocopies, painted paper, and card stock. I also use tape, pantone, letraset and whatever else I have found around. Thank you for this! I'm thinking of all the ways I can use this idea!!
Nice coulers
Very clever…thx🎉
Super neat, and beautiful.
Rebecca, this looks like fun! Can you tell me if what you refer to as parchment, is basically baking parchment? Or is it more like tracing paper?
@@msauve-rodd9384 Yes I’m using the parchment paper that is typically used for baking
@@reb_ott Thanks! I'll be giving this a try.
great!
Wow what a great and interesting video, great explanation as well. I definitely need some ai to work on my art because I usually just ‘rawdog’ it. Thanks for the tips 😅
Impressive talk.
Love it! Very clever!!!👍🏼
Ingenious.
Thanks for the demonstration. I wish you had shown the buffing and cold wax steps.
@@rabbitgregory9289 You’re welcome! You can find the buffing and cold wax videos in my playlist called ‘Finishing a Small Painting’

I’m so happy to have found your channel!
What is a 3M scrubbing pad and how does it buff without scratching?
@@Cosbonnie A 3M pad is synthetic steel wool - it’s sometimes called a Scotch Brite™ pad. I use the green ones and can find them in the grocery store or hardware store. It will dull a high gloss surface but won’t leave deep grooves.
Very cool! Thank you :)
Very helpful, thank you for the demonstration as I work with collage and painting and Experience the problem of uneven surfaces. Thank you.
What a wonderful idea, l never would've thought to do that with parchment paper and l use it to aid me in my art a lot. I really love what you're doing with the panels.
@@truthoverfiction777 Thank you I’m glad it was helpful!
Why waste parchment paper? Why not just paint over the panel?
@@Collageartist69 I use parchment paper as a palette so this is one way to use up this paint. Also you can cut out shapes.
A really interesting technique that I haven’t seen before and will try with my paper collage. Thank you for sharing!
Wow, that was awesome, I don’t think I’ve ever seen this done before! Thank you for sharing! 😊 question, you are painting on a panel it looks like, will this work if you do this technique on paper? Or say on gelli printed paper?
Newbie here. Would this work on paper? Might be a dumb question. LOL! What are the boards you are using? Thanks for sharing this awesome technique.
@@patriciadistefano7467 Yes this would work on paper. I’m using a wood panel in this video.
@@reb_ott Thank you, Rebecca.
Very cool technique. Am going to give this a try. Thanks!
What’s the difference from painting directly onto the piece. It’s hard to see difference at least on camera?
@@susanstern6303 I find I have more time to deliberate about placement or colour relationship by moving shapes or colours around. Also you can get very different edges if you cut the painted parchment with a scissor. And its a great way to use up extra paint if you use parchment as a palette
Nice technique!
Hi Rebecca, I've used a similar technique with plastic film. Not cling wrap but that plastic film that often wraps canvas. Apply acrylic paint to the film with a metal spatula in light strokes, varying the colours. Once dry it can be stuck onto artwork in the same way and the marks are really interesting.
@@chrisjohnson7609 Thanks that’s a good tip!
I like that idea, will try it 💖👍
Thanks ❤ Did you use acrylic paint? Will any paint do? Beautiful collage work 👏😁
@@paxy2011 Thank you! I use acrylic paint for this- acrylic paint bonds well to other acrylic mediums
How cool!!! This is the first time I have seen someone do this.❤
Love this.
What a novel idea! I look forward to trying it!
Great idea! I have tried to use my palette paper(parchment paper) with leftover paint as collage and it doesn’t always stick so this is a great alternative and a way to use that paint.
@@ellenwilliams6406 Yes it’s a great way to use leftover paint!
Very helpful, Ms. Ott! Ty
How fun is that!!! 🎉
❤
Very helpful!
This is really cool! I look forward to hopefully seeing more videos like this from you! Thanks!!!!
Hi Rebecca. Interesting technique. Thanks for posting.
That is amazing. Thanks
I never would’ve thought to do that technique….thanks so much for sharing that process….will matte gel medium work?
@@robingoff322 Yes matte gel medium would work too
@reb_ott thanks so much!!
does it matter which side of the parchment paper you paint on?
It doesn’t matter which side of the parchment you apply the paint to - choose a side and go for it!
Wow, this looks like so much fun thanks for sharing 😊
Wow Rebecca, what an excellent video. It was amazing to see your process creating these art pieces. You also have a very soothing voice 😅

Quilts can be a great inspiration- I hope you have fun experimenting!
I loved seeing this technique. What an in interesting and different method to apply paint. I can’t wait to try this! Thank you for sharing.
