2024 "16th Annual Larson's Cruise for the Cause" Car Show, Smithville, MO
EAA Chapter 612 displayed a Kitfox Classic IV homebuilt airplane at the car show. How? It has a Subaru E81 engine! We like to think we won best in class - since it was the only one in class!
Plane is owned by Kirk Hull. Car Show was May 11, 2024,in Smithville, MO - right downtown. See you next year.

I wanted to let the engine run a bit, so I pushed the throttle up to about 2950-3000 rpm, and cruised around at 1000 AGL indicating about 160-165 mph. Good times, even though it doesn't REALLY matter when you're going nowhere!

I dropped in to say hello to the gang, and ended up doing more talking than flying. It was interesting to watch the Ag planes flying out of that short runway - they used every foot of runway too.
Sonex T&Gs, and a Tire Flat on Landing, 12 July 2021
Переглядів 7503 роки тому
Three good touch and go's at Midwest National, then a final landing in the grass at Roosterville but the tire went flat! It's hard to tell but the plane slowed down faster than normal (I thought maybe the grass was long...), and then you'll see me looking confused and trying to see if I left parts behind me on the runway. Turns out the tire was completely flat by the time I got back to the hangar.

Morgan has flown with me in the Sonex a couple times previously, but I think he enjoyed this flight the most. He really took to flying the Challenger, and did better his first go than most others. He's a natural on the stick!

excellent info. having troubles with my cockpit noise through my MGL v10, i am hoping the V6 is similar enough to use these. thanks!
hi, excellent video. have a few questions though.... what did you make the upper and lower strut fairing caps out of (or where did you buy them)? how did you attach the partial cover you use for your oil cooler inlet in the winter time? did you add the fuselage sound insulation to mitigate the oil-canning, before or after you assembled your sonex? ... has it worked well for you? sonex's can be noisy (i know mine is!). did you add any other insulation or do other mods to mitigate noise or make your radio TX and RX clearer? thanks...... jim (sonex 1010, N485PB, aerovee...)
The gear leg upper and lower fairings were laid up directly on the airplane with 6 oz fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin. Once cured, they are trimmed and finished, then attached using a single flush screw, tinnerman washer, and nutplate. The oil cooler block off plate was fabricated the same way, and attached using two southco 1/4 turn fasteners in the plate and receptacles inside the cowl. The sound insulation was added during construction and glued in using 3M Supper 88 spray adhesive. It works great to eliminate the oil canning, and generally cut the noise from the tailcone.
Hello ! How do you maintain the almost same speed when you use full throttle? is it through trimming or small stick inputs ?
best vid on v-6 i wish MGL put more stuff out for help.
Thanks for the walk around, your polish turned out absolutely gorgeous!
AVLAB recommended taking the sample when the oil is hot. If you let it cool the contamination may settle to the bottom giving a false reading.
❤looks amazing inside and outside! 👏👏
What a beaut, all the little features add up: this is the sharpest sonex I've seen on youtube and by one hell of a margin. Damn!
Do you note the use if Seafoam on the paperwork sent to the oil analysis lab? Any concerns the Seafoam skewing the lab's findings?
Just found this Jeff, love this.
Hey Jeff, how many hours you got on the Jab now? I have 300ish on mine now, its a Gen2 hydraulic lifter motor. So far so good...only issues have been alternator stators...3rd time seems to be the charm! Haha.
Hi Jeff! Another nice video full of info. Wonder if you have any fuel pump in your system or its purely gravity fed? Thanks
The previous builders of my plane used camlocks, which like to hang up in there sockets even after you loosen them. Had I to do it over, I'd use the Southcos.
Can you hook up an external intercom to this one? Like the pm 3000?
Great video, thanks 👍
What is your empty weight? Awesome build!
Nice. How long did it take you to build? What’s its ceiling?
How much torque did you use to secure the Curtis 90 degree adapter? I snapped the brass bolt in half while attempting to install mine today.
just made me want to go finish up my sonex
I really like your auxiliary tank idea, did you use like a racing fuel cell or fab out an aluminum tank or something else?
Very well done, sir. Appreciate your modifications even more now that I've watched several videos- I definitely see why you would've gone with the Dynon radio- it would've been the last small piece of integration for your overall set up. I wonder if you would've been as happy (overall) with an AeroVee 2.1 or even the turbo? I really like how quiet your 3300 is even at max power and I enjoy the sound at cruise settings. It seems very smooth for all flight modes.
wow nice build ,beautiful paint scheme. well fabricated, Im sold
Nice looking aircraft, should make you proud and your day when you look take it for a spin!
Jeff, great video and thanks for including the spreadsheets. I fly an RV-9A but didn't build and therefore fly the test cards so I want to do this myself. I've read about al this but your video really filled in the blanks for me. I'd love to email you directly if I have questions.
Glad it helped! Reach out directly if you'd like to discuss further.
Thanks for the share. I am looking into getting into ultralight or lsa's. You handled your stuff well! :D
Good job staying on the controls. Never stop flying the aircraft.
You maintained your cool for sure. Worst successful flight ever...you landed in one piece.
Nice
Jeff, thanks for your videos. I am considering purchasing a used Sonex B. I have a question about learning to fly a sonex; is there formal training available to learn to fly a sonex. Also, what are your thoughts on buying a used sonex? Thanks!
Very helpful. Thanks!
Excellent video - thanks. Love the camera showing the fuel level.
Beautiful aircraft!
Man...the videos I've seen of Reklaw make me not wanna return to Texas to attend that...looks like a complete Cluster F#@$... only a matter of time I'm thinking....sadly.
You can sure tell the difference between 80 and 120 h.p.
This really needs to be on EAA's website, excellent video and fantastic spreadsheet that you've so graciously offered to the masses
What cruise speed do you get? Their site claims around 135mph /120kts at sea level and around 170mph/145kts at 8,000 ft. Both TAS for the Jabiru engine.
That's one of the best looking sonex planes ive seen. Love it!
Where is the location/state for your hanger and runway? It seems nice there!
I notice that you have a fabric canopy drap on the inside of your glass overhead covering. It has a metal bar that the fabric follows to give you shade in your plane. Can you provide the manufacturer for me and the approximate cost of the item in your plane shown here. TU! Paul
Paul, that fabric sun shade is made by "Koger". They are nicely made, and although they are priced a bit higher than you'd think just by looking at it, the quality and performance is wonderful, and I'd never want to go back to flying without one!
Thanks for that info......I appreciate it.
Beautiful and smartly configured. Love the colors.
Well done! Nice recovery! Time for aluminum seat bottoms
Been there. I had a challenger 1 and was flying one day and there was a rain shower about 12 miles away. A gust of wind hit while flying and nearly flipped me. I almost crapped my pants. I couldn't believe a thunderstorm that far away would effect me. Lesson to self. Never fly these light airplanes with rain or showers anywhere in your region.
There are a couple of nasty looking showers in view as you turn left prior to take off that even to me with no flying experience look out of the performance range of this craft. Glad you're ok and are pitching this as an educational exercise cos judgement seems off in this one.
“ worst flight ever”? Really? You landed safely and drove back home- Twas a great flight!
Got to wonder is there was wind shear caused by temp inversion due to approaching front.
to me this would be the best shit it reminds me of ww1
Good to publish one's own mistakes, in the hope that it'll help others to not make one.
I thought you were crashing in that field. I never thought you would land in it, but better for everyone neither happened. That was scary ....my heart was racing, but not as much as I bet yours was. Glad you guys made it back safely.
That wasn't your worst flight ever. Your worst flight ever you keep to yourself.
Front gear looks loose. I thought when you did the touch and go, that was to be a full stop because the turbulence was far too great for a light experimental. I was done and when you throttled up to leave the ground I was shocked. The clouds looked turbulent in the distance, another concern.
