I can’t imagine getting to see and hear Rachmaninov perform this. His enormous hands could span 12 piano keys. From the tip of his little finger to the tip of his thumb. In 24 years only one NBA player has had hand span of 12.0. He could stretch from middle C to G in the next octave. With his left hand he could stretch C-E flat -G-C-G and his right hand could Manage C(second finger) E-G-C-E (thumb under) He suffered pain in his back and arthritis in his fingers etc, though because of his hereditary disorder which was probably Marfan’s disease like Abraham Lincoln. Like they said it was his genius, not the size of his hands that made him great though. The connective tissue being the way it was with that disease is why he was able to stretch his hands and play such complex pieces. He was very much like Chopin I think as an artist and that’s why I think he loved Chopin, because you can hear their moods in the music they composed, and the passion when they played, you heard when they are happy and when they are sad, or depressed, frustrated or when they are passionate, you hear that in their music, When Chopin was in love with George Sands (famous female artist/writer who went under a nom de Guerre) You could hear their fights in the music and playing and later the making up. Chopin had the ideal fingers for playing which were boney tapered fingers. Rachmaninov dedicated his famous concerto No 2 to his therapist Nicolai Dahl after suffering a brutal and devastating 3 year depression after his his first symphony in 1897, and his dr used hypnotism and positive suggestion therapy so he began to heal and compose again. Eric Carmen’s(he’s also a pianist and composer) pop song “all by myself” was inspired by Rachmaninov’s concerto number 2. ua-cam.com/video/t8iTZm8-mbA/v-deo.html you can hear the influence as you listen to Rachmaninov. I think he would have liked both tributes to him and his famous concerto from the movie and also Eric Carmen’s. I find it interesting that I love both Chopin and Rachmaninov and that Rachmaninov also loved Chopin. And their styles are both genius and remarkably beautiful. The human soul comes awake with their music, and we can relate to what they felt as they played all of their emotions on the keyboard. I liked it best when they were calm and not suffering from illness, because you can hear the peace and calm in their incredible music and playing.
