    This is verbal gold. I thoroughly enjoyed the discussion on the subject matter. I had back to school night for my three year old son and I saw on the curriculum board a blurb about “conceptual learning/skill acquisition” I struck up a conversation with the teacher about it and told her how it has completely changed how I coached and go about teaching my son. Good luck to you Alex and Gary on your NBA venture.

    I believe that a "Pass and Cut" offense is not ideal for teams or players who are low-percentage shooters. Having five younger players positioned 18 feet out can be extremely challenging, especially when their shooting range and decision-making abilities are still developing. This style of play requires a high basketball IQ, which is often not present at the U10 to U14 level. It also assumes that all five players are skilled enough to be a threat from the perimeter, but at these younger ages, that's rarely the case. A more balanced approach, focusing on spacing, ball movement, and high-percentage shots closer to the basket, may be more effective for these age groups as they continue to develop their skills and understanding of the game.

    I like this sentiment, players are developing, making them compete to do forfeits of runs rather than punishments increases intensity & emphasises winning as well as the right technique. Punishment for the sake of someone doing something wrong just makes them fear & play worse in the future.

    Pass and Cut should not be viewed as just a pattern but rather as a means to create scoring opportunities, such as better spacing, 1v1 situations, or setting up the pick and roll. It should be incorporated into a principle-based, open offense like the Read and React system. Pass and Cut is only one option among many, but it’s particularly useful for getting younger players moving and engaged in the offense. It helps new players get involved before I introduce them to the other principles of Read and React, which is why Pass and Cut is always part of my warm-up. Before I can gain an advantage in a 1v1 situation, I need to collapse the defense. Pass and Cut without proper spacing, backdoor cuts, or penetration is indeed ineffective. It's the additional principles that truly create an advantage in the offense.

      @@gravityhurts7713I’d say just talking with them is a better solution. Maybe having them sit out for a practice might also work. I can also remember when I was a player, we sneaked out of our hotel after bedtime, when our team had a boot camp. Instead of being penalized in an old school way our coaches had us singing Karaoke in front of everyone. For us players it was embarrassing and we respected the bedtime afterwards. I think doing punishments in this way is better than the old school way because it doesn’t disturb our practice

    How would you feel about a traditional 3-on-2-on-1 drill with specific constraints for each line? For example, the middle line must outlet to either side and then either rim run or trail. The sideline that receives the ball must continue up that same sideline and can only score within the smile on their side (limiting space). The opposite line that doesn’t receive the outlet pass must hug the sideline, sprint to space, and fill either the 45 or corner, playing out of that if they receive a pass. On the way back, during the 2-on-1, they can do whatever they want to keep it simple.

      @@TransformBball Thanks for the advice. I’ve been using a game I got from Joe Mazzulla where a player must touch the baseline after shooting or turning the ball over, creating a momentary numbers advantage in transition instead of the traditional 3 on 2 on 1 drill. It’s been working well, feels more game-like, involves multiple players at once, and reduces the time players spend standing around waiting. The tough part is teaching the spacing, how to quickly identify the advantage, and how to recognize triggers, advantages, and dominoes.

    I definitely want my kids to think practice is their favorite activity of the week! How do you balance that with encouraging them to improve their weaknesses. For instance, if we play ball on the back, and I tell them they may not finish with their dominant hand, they all groan. Or, last night we played 3v3, but I shrunk the floor in half. My guards were furious at me because I cut out their space to maneuver.

  • @123-v5s
    @123-v5s 10 днів тому

    We're looking to expand our understanding of Small-Sided Games and the Conceptual Learning Approach. Currently, we implement half-court and full-court games with gold and silver rules, where the silver rule alternates between catch-and-shoot 3s only or any open shot taken in rhythm. We're considering adding a rule where, after every 3-point shot attempt, the shooter must touch the half-court line before rejoining play. This creates a temporary numbers advantage for the opposing team and places greater emphasis on quality shot selection by skilled shooters, ensuring they don’t disadvantage their team. Is this a well rounded approach in your opinion?

    Pass and cut should create advantages. A basket cut is a scoring opportunity, and puts pressure on the rim (if players are not cutting to score, don't stop cutting!). A basket cut also creates a double gap for a draft drive behind the cutter (a static 1 on 1) or a blast cut to the ball. A passer should have at least two options, e.g. basket cut if their defender does not jump to the ball, otherwise screen away. That said, I run dribble-drive motion with zero-second decisions, and pass and cut can become pass and get in the way. Pass and space away is an option, it does take away a blast cut by the next player on that side. Another option is backcut from a single gap into a blast cut and dynamic 1 on 1, with pass and hold (or space).

    Hello Coach Sarama. The ecological model has helped me greatly as a skill coach, in particular with my jumpers in track and field. My question with this material. If every athlete is unique and there is no correct technique why do elite performers in sport typically operate within a similar bandwidth with technique? I.e. all elite long jumpers will execute a heal to toe penultimate step, we will never see someone win an elite sprinting event running straight legged, no great outside shooter has flat arc in their jump shot. Is there some middle ground between one correct technique and everyone self organizes?

    • @TransformBball
      @TransformBball 24 дні тому

      Hey Drew, thanks so much for commenting. The similarity to this would be the jump shot in basketball. While all players shoot one handed (it's the most efficient self-organisational strategy), there are still many differences in terms of how the athletes specifically shoot (e.g. where they shoot from, hand placement, elbow placement, foot position etc). This may be the same in high jumping. Always worth considering however how many athletes have found new incredible solutions which change their sports. The Fosbury Flop being a great example!
