The Slickrock Stranger

The Slickrock Stranger roams the canyons and rivers of the Colorado Plateau with his brothers Even Stranger and Waaaaay Stranger, staying away for weeks at a time and occasionally leaving the canyon country to share his music.
He's played his songs for years throughout Utah and the West at peace rallies, environmental rallies, various folk music venues, desert gatherings, the Utah State Capitol, the Utah Arts Festival, and once while standing in front of Ed Abbey's old truck.
Whether he's singing about wilderness and public land issues, political issues, or the strange people involved, the thoughts and ideas that come from his desert sun-baked brain provide some odd but humorous viewpoints about Utah and the West, it's politics and characters.
As the saying goes, no matter where he sings, "It's just gonna get stranger". Be prepared.

The "A-Limp-Fix" Song
With the Olympics back in the news, and the winter event headed back to Utah in 2034, here's a video created for The "A-Limp-Fix" Song, that song from 2002 about the scandal that rocked the Salt Lake Organizing Committee.
I had a ton of fun due to the song, with LOTS of stories, including being hired to play Dave Johnson's celebration party (read the description on his picture) AND singing a duet with reporter Rod Decker live on the 5:00 news in front of KUTV's Main Street studios after being questioned and chased from the federal building sidewalk by the federal cops earlier that morning when the trial ended. (Didn't have a permit from the GSA!)
During the games, the Canadian Broadcasting Company recorded me playing at an open mic and used the song as bookends in a long-form story on the scandal. Didn't think much of it until a nice check unexpectedly appeared in my PO Box.
I should mention I was lucky enough to get a ticket outside the stadium ($260 for a $880 ticket) and sat in the front row for the opening ceremonies! What a great experience. I even got to boo George Bush from there. To be close enough to see the athletes faces as they entered the stadium and their dreams were realized was incredible, and what I'll remember most.
I sold pins during the games, met tons of people, and came away with a great pin collection as you'll see in the video, excepting the pic of the 10 bribe pins which I don't have. The rest are mine.
One more thing. At the time of this CD release in December of 2001, Salt Lake's reputation certainly did have a "black eye" as the end of the song states. While the bid scandal did tarnish Salt Lake's reputation, the actual games restored it. The event ended up turning a profit which made Utah taxpayers happy, Utah scored a ton of federal money for roads and infrastructure, and a lot of folks had some great times, including me. The event that brought the world to Utah was even enough for the tee-totaling mormons to loosen up Utah's liquor laws.
Culturally, the event had a positive effect on Utah. Unfortunately, it also meant more of the world discovered Utah, and the effects on our spectacular canyon country, our land prices, and our growth rate in the second driest state in the nation is what I had hoped not to see as a result of the games.
But a lot of Utahns have great memories from 2002, enough to bid on and win the 2034 winter games.

I'll rate this band A+ for all players. Dan had high praise for Gavin Largent by comparing him to Jerry Douglas. I've heard both. Gavin may be excellent but he's no Jerry Douglas.
Yeah, I'm glad Dan is happy with all his players, but really? Might want to check with Jerry Douglas, Rob Ickes, Andy Hall, and Steve Lutz. And Sierra Hull's VERY lucky beau, Justin Moses.

Marty and his group are one of the best bands playing live in any genre today. So much musical history with each member. The string bender is a great instrument and Marty is paying homage to Clarence.
