Northstar Enduro - California Enduro Series - Race VLOG Day 1
I finally had the opportunity to get up to Tahoe and race the Northstar Enduro!
2 days of mental and physical racing on some of the best trails in Northern California.
At the end of day 1 I was sitting in 4th place and I'm stoked on my performance.
I was only 1 second off the fastest Gypsy time of the day even with the crash.
I'll be splitting this up into 2 videos so stay tuned for pt. 2

OChain on a high pivot? 1st Impressions
Переглядів 32316 годин тому
What can I say that you don't already know about the OChain? It allows for float on the chainring which isolates alot of the drivetrain forces. Even with a high pivot bike you'll still feel these forces in the pedals, but with the OChain almost all of those forces are gone. PROS: The bike is quieter, it gets hung up less on square edge hits, and its better under significant braking forces. CONS...

Stoked to take home 5th in Men's Expert 30-39 with a final time of 18:26! If you made it to the end you could hear my frustration as I caught up with the rider in front of me on stage 5. Sadly with about a minute of riding left I started getting into his dust and the low visibility made it hard for me to charge on. This was my best race performance and aside from that slide out and catching him...

      Hope you finished well 👌🏻 dodge ridge really prepared me for those loosey goosey turns but they don’t have nearly as much support. Braking before and letting off thru is definitely the way to gain more traction, just gotta be careful with that front wheel.

    I think I've been doing the Woods wrong. I love the bottom half (below Tryumph) but I just can't get my head around the top half. The top of the trail seems way different on this video that what I remember from just last week or so; I thought there was a set of big rollers/single jumps at the beginning? Deer Path is horrible; that first turn with the row of rocks instead of a berm is ridiculous.

    • @justin_niemi
      @justin_niemi День тому

      When you exit Vista make an immediate L and it’ll take you to the top of woods. I’m gonna assume you’re riding flameout, then connecting into woods because it starts with rollers into some loose berms. Deer Path was awful, but I’m glad they had an absolute burner of a stage, levels us all out in a way 👌🏻

    Interesting. I got rid of my Onyx Vesper hub because it had the same spongy engagement feel you describe with the OChain. Some may like it, but it felt horrible to me.

    • @justin_niemi
      @justin_niemi 7 днів тому

      I’ve ridden those hubs before and I have to say it’s different than OChain. The Onyx hubs felt “spongy” on every rotation and while they’re silent it definitely comes at a cost. The OChain only feels that way on the initial stroke and then it just feels normal.

  • @bullit4x
    @bullit4x 7 днів тому

    Just use a crappy hub with less engagement. Using those defeats the point of a hub with heaps of pawls. From the feedback from 2 friends that wasted money on that is that it does help if you run flats

    • @justin_niemi
      @justin_niemi 7 днів тому

      I couldn’t disagree more, I’ve ridden the cheapest hubs out there, and none of them gave me the feel that the OChain does. The thing about the rear hub is it’s inconsistent. You might have a ton of float you might have no float, depending on where it lies as you’re putting the pedals down.

      @justin_niemi 7 днів тому

      @@bullit4x I agree learning how to ride better is a good start and most riders should start with sessioning/coaching before upgrading their bike. For those who are looking for a smoother ride with less square edge bumps and overall less feedback in the pedals this is a great option. Sure, maybe it is a tad gimmicky but I can’t deny there’s a performance benefit greater than simply swapping to a low engagement hub.

Your lines looked real good up to that last rhythm section where you lost a lot of speed. Even I screwed that up doing table to table, with speed I think it's a good line but it seems like the triple is the move, that section take a lot of balls to pick a fast line😂. I'll be in Nevada City for Dirt Daze in 2 weeks. What would you say is the best flow trail for a relative older newbie? TIA.

      Due to the sensitivity of the area and because this trail is unsanctioned I won’t release locations or trail names. When trails are 100% legal I have no problem doing so.

    What are some mods you’d recommend for the SE? It’s on sale for $4500 so I may get that. Thank you!

    I got my AM and put a 38 170 on it and it plows amazingly. Next up, coil!

      Sounds like that’s the best option! Did it loose any of its spritely characteristics with the extra weight?

      Been riding coil now for a month or so and it feels like butter. Amazing bike. I’m hitting gaps and drops I’ve never thought I would. Best purchase ever.

    My buddies motor keeps shutting off and won’t turn back on. Luckily it pedals pretty well with the motor off so some rides have turned into analog rides 😂 Not sure if he’s figured out the cause but a bit unreliable. He loves it otherwise. Bike rips and keeps up with my Kenevo Expert full fat on big rides.

      Gosh, pedaling one of these off sounds like a nightmare 😳 stoked to hear he can keep up with the full powers when it’s running good tho! I assumed it would fall behind a bit even in rocket.
