The Secret to Achieve an Urban Food Garden: Planting Indoors
Great song choice! They really ARE everything.
Did the pepper work?
Lovely! Off to a great start🤗
Thanks so much for doing this. I'm south of you and this year is going to be my first time gardening in TX🙂
I'm sure you'll love gardening in Texas! There is a learning curve, especially when dealing with the summer heat. But in this podcast I will make sure to cover all basis! Thanks for joining!😊
This is great! Thank you so much.
I’m glad you found it helpful!
No time currently because we're just trying to keep the water pipes from freezing. And she's taking g up all the room indoors for her outdoor plants.
I totally understand! Stay warm my friend, and keep those pipes safe. I had a few burst on me before and that is NO fun at all!
I am thinking of adding Q/A portion at the end of each video. How would you feel about me answering your specific gardening questions at the end of each video? Let me know your thoughts.
Good stuff, you have a good voice for teaching!
Thank you, I appreciate you saying that! 😊 I used to teach High School Automotive Technology.
Hey Gray! Good to see you! Great information. Awesome sharing☘☘
Stacey! Hello my friend. How have you and your garden been?
I have a basic aquaponics system in our small greenhouse. It's a kids pool with a couple goldfish that goes up to a solids collector and then to the grow bed. From the bed it goes back to the kids pool. It works, but it can be better.
Your system sounds great! I would like to build a bigger system as well, as soon as I find some time it’s going to be too on my todo list.
Aquaponics systems are awesome. When I lived in Costa Rica I had tilapia in a chopped IBC tank/bed and I grew a lot of salad stuff and strawberries. Then I had a couple IBC tanks in NC with the same goldfish for 5 years. I grew more salad stuff and strawberries, plus I started to play with dual root zones for tomato and pepper plants. You might want to try growing pineapples in your aquaponics system. They work together. It looks like you could use a gravel grow bed for more plants, and it gives you a lot more filtration. I like your set-up. It's fun to have aquaponics in the house. I'd like to set up an aquarium in my room and make a dual root zone setup for my stinky little medicinal plants. 😉
Thanks, I will have to research pineapples for aquaponics!
..the Mrs.: I DONT THINK SO!!
Yes! Exactly, and as we know, happy wife = happy life!
@urbangardeningwithgray That's what I used to think. Now I know it's bigger than that. It's "Happy spouse, happy house" ..because both parties should be happy.
Aphids can't stand? Wanna see aphids on resemary? I can show you.
Young Gray is absolutely adorable! He is so smart and willing to learn. I hope you keep making videos. I can share them with my nieces and nephews to get interested in gardening, too. They all love strawberries.
Thank you, he is my little mini me. He loves learning and loves plants! We will keep on growing and keep on filming. 😊
Dang! I was all excited for a few minutes about growing citrus in the PNW. We got down to 4 degrees last year and I have no where to store a citrus tree when it gets that cold. I look forward to hearing your updates 👊🏻🌻👊🏻
Wow, 4 degrees. We did experience that one year back during our snowpacolpse of 2021. I will keep researching. If I find anything that can tolerate a bit more cold I will keep you posted.
@@urbangardeningwithgray Thank you very much and yep! That was the coldest I remember it ever being, but high single and low double digits in quite normal for a week or two every winter.
you have a great tree there Bitter oranges are making a come back
Thank you I agree. I have been hearing more and more about them lately.
Dig that sucker up, toss it in a large pot, and graft whatever you want on it. It'll take off for sure and won't mind the transplant. You could also airlayer branches to be potted and then graft onto those while leaving the main trifolate in the ground. Good luck with whatever you do! Growing Variegated Pink Eureka lemon, Meiwa kumquat, Meyer lemon, calamondin, Kishu mandarin, Sumo(Shiranui mandarin), Sarawak pomelo, and Yuzu lemon over in Rockwall county.
I think I will do just that, airlayer. Thank you for the recommendation. You have quite the collection. They will now all be added to my wishlist! Thank you!🙏🏾
Thanks for sharing I have learned alot I will prepare mine as you show 😊❤
Glad to help. Let me know if you have any additional questions or need any help
Fav part of have no dudes with cowboy hat
😂
That’s so true ! ❤
😊
Cool idea
Thank you!🙏🏾
It should work. One year I made a removable side wooden box and it worked well, but not a lot of folks have or access to woodworking tools. The bail of hay method seems very doable. I might try that next because it's a pain to dig up a row of potatoes when the straw method is a matter of uncovering.
Thanks, I did it a couple years back, and worked fine. Just small potatoes is all. Let me know how the hay bail works for you.
@urbangardeningwithgray Not sure what I'll do this year. Last year was a bust with all the rain. So completely heartbreaking to spend all that energy and effort for nada. Can't imagine how our ancestors felt because they didn't have HEB to save them.
@@skigglystars9525😂 True! They didn’t have HEB. I do love that store through. Didn’t you grow purple hull peas last season?
@urbangardeningwithgray OMG Gray.. they are STILL putting out. I've already tilled up the front garden and I'm ready to rework the raised bed but it has been so productive, I can't make myself do it. I counted 40 bags in the freezer. When I thought they were done and the zipper creme peas started putting out, I mixed them..oh it's a great flavor. Imagine some cornbread and a mixture of PHP and ZCP steaming hot. Don't know what the rich folk are eating but this poor country boy is eating like a king.
I agree with you all around.
Thank you!🙏🏾
Sharing the bounty our lord has provided!
Sharing is caring. 😊
My FAVORITE part of gardening is watching those tiny little seedlings pop up! ❤❤❤ It's so gratifying to see those seeds turn into future plants. It feels like plant birthing 😂😂
It’s amazing to see nature in action.
Beautiful.
Thank you!🙏🏾
Howdy from the cold white north, in Alberta! I didn't think Dallas got cold enough to see your breath! I knew sometimes you get a little ice and the whole place shuts down, but thought that was rare. 😅
You are right, a little ice and snow and every thing shuts down 😂. But oh yes, it gets to freezing levels often here. Plus in my micro climate I am about 5 degrees colder then most of the Dallas area as I have a creek that runs though my property and a dense tree canopy.
I love texas tree farms , i may go by there today and spend all my money
Texas Tree Farm rocks!
Beautiful fruit. What is the brand of compost you have there?
Living Earth. I have been using them for years. They make their compost and soil locally so it the best to use in my microclimate. They are located in Texas and Tennessee.
I'm trying to grow low chill blueberries for the first time but my soil doesnt have appropriate PH range. It is acidic but just not enough to have blueberries thriving. Would you recommend Orange peel powder around the roots?
It potentially could help, orange peels have an acidity of 3.5-4.5. Blueberries require a well draining soil that is 4.0-5.5. Thus if you were to add a 1/2 cup of orange peel powder per square foot of soil, it should help you lower the pH. But it will depend on the alkalinity of your soil to start with. So I would test before and after to ensure it is where you need it to be. Also, you may have to reapply over time. An alternative is using an acidic soil like an azalea soil which is already at a pH of 4.0 to begin with. That is what I did with my 4 blueberry bushes. I planted them with an azalea blend mix with about 25% compost. Please let me know what you decide and your results.
@@urbangardeningwithgrayThe problem is most acidic fertilizers are unavailable here. No nursery around here has peat moss or pine bark chips which are most commonly used for blueberry potting mix. These plants are imported and I was foolish enough to have not ordered the potting mix along with it. PH meters too are quite expensive here. I did a basic Baking soda test and that does conform my soil is acidic but definitely not within the PH range of Blueberries. Anyways, Now the 2 plants I have are neither growing nor dying. I'm trying Apple cider vinegar and homemade citrus peel powder every 4-5 days in the hopes that it'll somehow survive. I'll sure let you know if This works...
As we say in Texas, "give it 5 minutes, it'll change". I'm in Ft Worth and 'snowmageddan' was crazy.
You are right about that! Yes Snowmageddan was crazy, I lost power for about a week and a half. But luckily I had two back up propane tanks and a bunch of firewood.
Where did you get the moringa seeds?
Thanks for asking. I actually got them from a friend. I want to say he ordered them on Amazon. Interestingly enough, I don’t think his plant actually survived past germination. I grew a total of 5, kept two. Gave away the other three to friends.
Great video.. Did you mention moringa? I take leaf powder everyday.. 🤔👍🏻
Thanks! Yes, I have two trees growing in pots that I started from seed February of this year. Once I get enough growth on the trees I do want to make my own Moringa powder as well.
Good video, thank you.
Glad you liked it! I appreciate your support and feedback!
If people didn't learn from that Texas freeze that it is possible for more southern states to get extremely cold temperatures, then maybe they should pay more attention to what is going on. Weather can be very weird, like when we dropped 20 or so degrees to below freezing in a few short hours a couple of years ago, or like I mentioned when Texas lost power because the turbines froze.
You are absolutely right. I remember that freeze it was brutal! I lost power for a week and a half. Pipes burst, it was chaotic.
Thanks for sharing. ❤
You are more than welcome! Thanks for watching!🙏🏾
Ok. So how do you protect them from pests? You never said how.
Sorry, I had placed the tips in the description. Handpicking is the most cost effective method. But can be time consuming. I prefer companion planting aromatic plants near my citrus, rosemary and basil are the the two that I use primarily. The scents will repel a plethora of pests. Additionally, if you would like a more direct approach there is always the option of using Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) spray, it is available at most garden centers and online. Just be sure to follow instructions on the bottle. If you need more specific guidance let me know.
Would it be deterred by lights? What about some solar lights along the path?
Nope, he runs right past my solar lights 😂
That 1 is leaving me ankle breaking holes everywhere in my yard. I have filled so many holes lol, but they sure are fun to watch. I read they are nocturnal. I met mine in the morning, while it was grubbing. I stood and watched for a bit and let it be.
It’s so funny how unbothered they are by our presence. 😊
Leave that armadillo alone
😂
Tell him to leave me alone! 😊
Bet it's good on a burger.
Most definitely!👍🏾
I got one a few months back but have been hesitant to start.
You should definitely either fall on it way. During fall and winter I grow a lot of things indoors. I just harvested some freckles lettuce last week.
The hand shakes indicate a vitamin deficiency. Hydroponic agriculture causes that, as the plant isnt pulling nutrients from the earth. 😢 The big beautiful bounty is a rich mans trick on regular folk
Thanks for your comment. My hand was shaking from slowly pulling the roots from the hydroponic chamber. I was making sure not to damage too many of the roots. I use the hydroponics as a plant starter. Especially when growing cool weather crops in my north Texas environment. It’s a great way to start them in a climate controlled environment before introducing them outdoors.
Who do they keep talking about harvesting? Who is planting bamboo to harvest it??
Your Son is very intelligent and very helpful 👌🏾. Great Job Sir.
Thank you very much!💚
Gorgeous 😊
Thank you! Cheers!
Very informative, and I appreciate your presentation style.
Thank you very much! I appreciate your support.🙏🏾

Always cool to see how people make tea. So many variations. I may have to try yours sir.
Thank you! I know there are a variety of ways to brew compost tea. What is your preferred or “go-to” method?
@@urbangardeningwithgray I don't understand the science of it completely so maybe you can help with somet tips. I personally don't do anything special, I compost my weeds in buckets with water and aerate. Takes longer but I have good results. I make other compost too and am constantly improvising ways to incorporate organic materials.
Try Clipping your mic to your front tip of your hat. It sounds like your in a glass room
Thanks I appreciate the advice. I will give it a try. I have been trying to find the right microphone and distance combination for a while now. I will try clipping to my hat.
