Upper Nantahala 900 cfs
Переглядів 1,5 тис.3 роки тому
Upper Nantahala normally releases anywhere between 250-450 cfs so when we heard they were working on the generators and all flows would come over the spillway sending 900 cfs down the upper, we headed there to check it out. We weren't disappointed. If you get the chance to run this section at higher flows, don't pass it up.

Got a chance to demo the new Antix 2.0 and run the spillway in Columbus. The Antix was really easy to adjust to and pretty much does everything you could ask for in a down river play boat. If you haven’t paddled one, head down to Whitewater Express in Columbus and give it a try.

What locust fork is this? Im in alabama, and there are 3 different ones in our state. Lol
That's awesome
Thanks brother! We had a blast out there. Thunder is a pretty demanding trail.
Broke my arm on this trail last year. Upgraded my bike and now it's my favorite trail. Good job getting through it! I'm sure the motor helps get up red road
Oh the motor was 👌 for that climb.
Is there a name for the large rock just before the takeout? 5:07 on . We ran bear creek one day and when we got down to that large rock, it was under waster and the water was up to the level of the roadways..
I’m not sure if it has a name but if you were running Bear, the canyon was definitely high. Bear is a fun one!
I missed your run at Bottle Neck. How was it? We did it once at 10,000, very narlly.
We had a swimmer in the entrance rapid of Bottleneck and had to get his boat before it flushed down river. We did not run the main drop this day b/c of that.
@@dylancarr1036 Been there. When we were there at 15,000 (estimated, and probable higher) we had to sneak down the left side. There was a tounge of water going down the middle with no sign of the ledge. I saw hugh eddy's on each side. The water was impacting the river level about 75' below the ledge. I went first and when I got to the bottom of the tounge, the water took me straight to the bottom of the river. I floated up further down stream.. Still up right. When we got to the take out the water was up to the level of the road.
hey Dylan where did ya'll put in? Have any idea of level?
Level was 1800cfs. It’s the regular put in. County Rd 617. It’s a dirt road behind a church that’s built into a rock. Kind of hard to miss that church. Never seen anything like that before.
Yea, I put in there once and paddled down to just below that big class III rapid. took out on the right, walked up a steep hill. Road is normally closed, goes back to the park @ the last cabin. I was paddling with some of the park employees.@@dylancarr1036
yes would love any info on this area
Wait. Where is the lake, always my favorite paddle. Watched till the end and no lake. Never paddled the lake when we were not paddling into the wind.
Nice dude! Using this for beta 🤙🏽
Where is this?
Columbus, GA flood stage. Normal flows are from 1000 to 12,000 cfs. This was 26,000cfs
@@dylancarr1036 Thanks. Looks like fun.
Worth it?
Definitely. I’ve been 4 times and will go this weekend as well. Both channels are great and there is a play feature in the top pool where the water is pumped back up so you don’t have to worry about traffic coming down on you.
@@dylancarr1036 cool. I’m gonna have to check it out.
wait..... this is Montgomery Alabama ?
Yes it is and it is awesome!
Looks pretty continuous.
There are a couple of breaks between the bigger rapids but yeah, it’s pretty continuous. They did an awesome job designing this course.
11:05 - Yard Sale - Thanks for showing me the line!
Did y’all go last weekend?
@@dylancarr1036 Yeah man, my 3rd time down and Mel's PFD!
Awesome! I need to get back up there. Only been once.
Nice ride! video is good for some beta
Thanks! Cheoah is a southeast gem
where is that cave located at the end?
There is a beach and a rope swing where people hang out on the right just below Shoulder Bone. It’s up in the woods above that.
Funny story. We met at CMP. New paddler to join us. Loaded up kayaks and just as we started to leave, new paddler said he left his PFD at home. I gave him mine and we headed off to the river. Great day
Using this for beta 🤙🏽
That’s what it’s there for. Hope it’s useful for you.
No way is this 2400. Lovely run, but it is at about 500 or so.
It’s 400. The 2 belongs to the upper as in Upper 2. 🤣 highest I’ve ran Suicide and Upper 2 was 1250. I don’t think I want it at 2400
Super tremendous my friend! My big Like😄👍👍 and sub! New friend. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
So what happened that day? Why was all the water coming out of the side instead of over the ledge? Are releases like this scheduled in advance? I wanna do the ocoee at high water I’ve only done it up to around 1800-2000 cfs but don’t know how to plan for it. I live a good 4 hour drive away
I’m not sure why they ran it through the gate. It was pure luck we caught it at this level. We just got off Tellico and checked the level so we headed to Ocoee to catch it.
Hell yeah! That looks way better than the 450 release
Seems like the more water the better here. I heard a few locals saying it was higher than what was posted this weekend. Especially Saturday. I saw somewhere that posted 560cfs recorded around 11:30 to 3:00. It felt fluffy to me but I wouldn’t have complained if they raised it on up closer to 1000. It’s so good at that level.
@@dylancarr1036 I was up there too! Ran it Saturday and Sunday. We probably passed each other 🤙🏽🤣
Dylan, how much more do you like the scorch than the 9r2?
It’s a better choice for me. The bow stays drier, no stern taps on boofs and it’s a little easier to move around the river. I feel like it’s a touch slower but that works for me. I’m not blowing past eddies. It does surprisingly well in SE mank even with the hard edges. I’m definitely glad I made the switch.
All the narrow sections looked fun AF
It’s steep and fun as hell. This was extremely low flow. I hope to catch it again this year around 4”. This was like 0 on the bridge marker
@@dylancarr1036 I need to start knocking down some of the Bama runs like this and LRC
Hit me up sometime. I’ll be glad to show you down LRC and Sand Mountain.
@@dylancarr1036 hell yeah! I'll definitely take you up on that offer 🤙🏽
water looked lower than 2400?? I was wondering why you walked pin ball? and a great save at deep throat.
Level was 400. I think you misread the title. Suicide and Upper 2 @ 400. I haven’t ran pinball yet. Only been on Suicide twice. Just haven’t felt it yet. I’ve ran everything but pinball in the canyon.
Using this for beta! Thanks dude! You're super smooth 🤙🏽
Thanks. That’s why I put these out there. Are you running it this weekend?
@@dylancarr1036 yep. My PFD is tomorrow. 🤙🏽
Nice! It’s a great run. Nothing else like it in the SE in my opinion. Non stop action from start to finish. Enjoy
@@dylancarr1036 thank you dude! I'm sure I'll see you on the river sometime 🤙🏽
For sure! Looks like we know a lot of the same people
🤙🏽
Sick!
Thanks. It’s pretty sporty at that level
Wow. Fantastic ride. You and your cohort handled that well!
Thanks! Cheoah is definitely a classic. Not many like it in the southeast.
Big water
Where exactly is this? I work in Athens AL, and I have never heard of this creek. I have looked online and cannot find it. Thanks soo much!
I wish I had more details for you. I went once with some friends and I’m not familiar with the area. I don’t know if this helps but where we put in, the water actually travels over the road like a spillway. I’ll check and see if I can get you some directions from my friends that live up that way.

@@dylancarr1036 Thank you sooo much! This place is definitely a hidden gem. Thanks so much for sharing this!
@@marypachol4305 you are welcome. It’s a great class 2 run
Dang it. That looks like a good time.
South Sauty has some of the best class 4 whitewater Alabama has to offer! Thanks for watching!
Where is this at?
North Alabama. It runs into Lake Guntersville
@@dylancarr1036 thanks buddy. We are about an hour north of Chattanooga. Was just wondering. Again thanks for the reply.
you need to be clipped in and anchored with pulleys when standing above a sieve. don't want to lose a life to save a boat.
Dude. You got eaten. Very nice recovery. Well done.
Thanks brother. The Hooch is gnarly at that level
Nice job rolling up in that big water. That looks like an incredible run for a playboat with all those beautiful waves and holes everywhere. Thanks for posting the video!
Brooks, this place is known as Rush South or The Wintering Grounds. Pros from around the world come here during the winter b/c the temps are tolerable and the play spots are abundant. Stephen Wright makes this his home 6 months out of the year. It’s also bred the current Jr Mens World Champ, Mason Hargrove. I’m lucky to have a place like this within an hour from my house. It’s also the host of the 2023 Freestyle World Championships.
@@dylancarr1036 thanks for the info. I was recently introduced to this "Wintering Grounds" by Alex Barham's excellent video about it. It's a long way from Portland, Oregon, but would be awesome to visit sometime. I love playboating and big water.
so sick
Thanks man
what are you doing the week of march 11-20th? looking for someone to paddle this section with me
Look me up on Facebook and shoot me a message so we can talk about it.
Another great video, learned a lot from watching!!! Can't wait to hit this one! 6:34 - Massive boof bro! 8:18 - Right line BearCreekFalls
You’re gonna love this one. It’s nonstop for 10 miles and builds dramatically. I’m definitely down to do this one again. Hit me up and maybe we can get a group together to run it next release season.
Nice vid! Could you tell me what size Scorch you have and your height and weight? How are you liking the boat and sizing?
It’s a medium Scorch. I’m 5’8” and 180 lbs. I love the boat. Takes a little time to get used to the edges but overall, it’s a pretty sweet boat to paddle.
@@dylancarr1036 I'm 6'1' 190 do you think medium would be OK for me? Thanks Brother!!
Yeah. You’d fit in a medium just fine.
Is this in Alabama?
Yes. It’s in Northeast Alabama close to Fort Payne.
🤘🏼
Sweet edit.
Thanks brother! Had a blast this weekend!
Dude your bracing game is amazing!
Thanks! Practice makes perfect
Beautiful run, many good recoveries. Thanks for sharing. Was your stern a little low in the water? It looked like it was grabbed a few times when you didn't expect it.
Thanks. It was my 3rd run in the Scorch and I’m still getting used to the edges. It definitely caught me off guard a couple of times. I’ve ran this Section one time at 400 cfs before I got the Scorch. This level was a lot pushier and was the first time I really felt those edges trip me up. I’m sure it was mainly bad form ( probably leaning back). All in all, it’s a great boat, just gonna take some getting used to.
@@dylancarr1036 that all makes sense. It usually takes me a few runs to figure out the optimal seat and bulkhead positions and balance points for loading edges in a new boat. Thanks for responding!
Nice run!
Thanks. Seeing it in person really gives a better perspective of how steep, stacked and powerful it is. Definitely the prettiest run in Alabama.
Excellent, man. That back deck at .53 was super clutch. Well done.
Thanks. Probably my quickest roll yet.
👍
id love to run that. great job
If you ever get a chance, go. It’s so much better than the 250- 450 scheduled release.
@@dylancarr1036 looks awesome.
it's the best thing you will ever do.
This is rowdy!!! Deff see it turned up to class 4 of continues flow on this at 900 nice paddling
It was a great level! My favorite so far. I’d love to see it higher one day.
