Therapist breaks down how Souls games affect our mental health
Переглядів 99 тис.4 місяці тому
Here's a video I made dissecting the gameplay loop of FromSoftware's Souls games such as Dark Souls, Sekiro, and Elden Ring, and seeing how is affects our mental health. As a therapist with an education in CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), my approach has more to do with how our thoughts, feelings, and behavior all connect when faced with a situation that sparks an emotion. The loop in these ...
I didn't really interact with this character much considering I never did an intelligence build so it was cool to learn about this character. I dont think you were looking into the words to much when she said overthrowing first, I think that was definitely her priority. Good work yet again!
Thank you, appreciate the support! You should definitely try interacting with her if you run another playthrough, you don't need an INT build to do her questline!
UA-cam is recently recommending more "low view" content, and sometimes there's a gem, like this video. I'm really glad I got this video on my feed. I watched it immediately, but wanted to rewatch it and write a proper comment. I loved it! Listening to you is easy as you don't stutter or use filler words, I guess use a script(?) and the video is so easy to look at. Nothing fast pace just what matters or gives you time to talk. It really gave me a further perspective on Sellen. You're the reason I even "ended" the questline. Because, if you don't visit Lusat she will stay in Rennalas place until you do (essentially locking you out of rebirth) At first I didn't want to turn her into the ball, because from what I saw in the quest and my surface level listening she was quite nice and had an admirable goal (not the revenge part). You talking about her arrogance and misdeeds convinced me to let her "give in to it" (ofc gameplay wise I got stars of ruin but I like keeping characters alive, I procrastinated on the giants forge part because I didn't want melina to die). I would criticise though, that you say she's "not that intelligent" 3:23. Of course we know not how intelligent the best students in the academy are, but I think that is a high benchmark. I mean she must have posed a serious threat if they locked her in a basement. I only think her arrogance matters here that compels her to take on rennala (questionably without the tarnished). Of course though, i agree she is not intelligent when compared to rennala, -but rennala is like bringing usain bolt to a 10th graders 100m race- maybe, we just can't powerscale her properly. We just know rennala is overwhelming, as after the "battle" she suffered no wounds and sellen is.. well the ball. Also, at the end (9:13) with "all those 3 characteristics" do you mean her pursuit of knowledge, exaggerated sense of self and revenge journey? Because I kind of expected adjectives when you mentioned it. All in all great video. Do you write scripts for your videos? If so, would you mind sharing them anywhere? Sometimes I dislike scrolling back and forth in videos, and sometimes I can better formulate my own opinion on something when I read, not hear it. If you take recommendations, especially outside of elden ring, I'd love an analysis of Vaas or Jason from Far Cry 3, Vinland Saga's Thorfinns/Thors' philosophy and how surrealistic or realistic it is, but most of all, because you talked about it with sellens arrogance, your perspective on a mindset meant for improving. You said that (5:00) if your Hubris is self manipulative (like not studying in spite of incompetence) it could lead to self deprecation and whatever comes down that line. I think that's an interesting thing to explore or to give insight on how it's flawed/how to deal with it. Thank you so much for the video.
Dude, I don't even know where to begin haha. Your comment really means a lot, not only for the praise but for the constructive criticism. The intelligent comment was relative to the world and characters around her. Yeah it's safe to say she was probably one of the more intelligent characters in the game, but a the same time she totally disregarded how strong Rennala was and thought she was pm that level (clearly not). Plus it seems her actions are rooted in emotions, which is why I think her #1 goal was probably to take over the academy out of spite, and that could explain why she was locked up. Sure her potential for harm based on her intelligence is great, but the atrocities she committed seemed to be more about payback/emotion rather than purely for knowledge (i.e.. floaty mage balls). Trust I do stutter and use filler words, even with a script sometimes haha (you can check out my first video for that), I just spend a lot of time editing. My next few videos are going to be about Elden ring characters just because I'm enjoying making them, but I'll probably do some on other characters along the way like James from Silent Hill 2 and some Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous characters (currently playing that). I also want to go back and play DS1 and 3 and cover some of those characters, along with some BG3 characters. I'm actually thinking about doing some less scripted videos that may not be this style just to keep delivering you guys content since the process takes a while (while also trying to work, study, and start a business lol), we'll see though. Vaas would be an awesome video, but probably later down the pipe line. Again, really appreciate your comment and thank you, glad you enjoyed the video!
@@Psych_Lore I'm glad you think that way! You deserve praise, this is well made! I completely understand stuttering filler words etc, but fact is, you pay attention to it and mitigate it with editing. That enriches the viewing experience a lot, so thank you for that. Regarding Sellen: I understand your point more now. Illustrating that Sellens actions may be more out of emotion than really the benefit of "humanity" (whatever living beings in Elden Ring). I think it's noticeable that she has a much higher goal than revenge, but still pays that much attention to it. I think if one has a goal as gigantic as restoring the primeval current, any unnecessary thoughts would go out the window. She's still quite hung up about it. I understand wanting to put out less scripted videos. My worries with it would be, that the quality suffers from it. I trust your expertise judging by this video, but I don't think spending time to ensure quality is a bad thing. Of course, if you want to put out content for views, money, going full time then that's a different thing. I'll be here for it anyway! I don't dislike you doing Elden Ring Characters, or those you're interested in at all.Just wanted to mention some characters that could be quite entertaining to look into. *Would love a video on how a bad mindset destroys meaningful progress though, because you said Sellen lacks accountability and that gets in the way of self awareness. * Regarding my questions from before: 1. Would you publish your scripts if you do write any? and 2. was I correct with what you meant with the "3 characteristics" of sellen being pursuit of knowledge, exaggerated sense of self and the revenge journey? Thank you for the reply, I''ll definitely be here for following videos.
my good man, i'd really love to hear your analysis on Messmer.
I’ll eventually get there 😅 definitely interested in making a video about him. Hope you enjoyed the video and thanks for the comment!
To be fair, it doesn't take an intelligence build to defeat Renalla
Oh for sure! I meant it in the context of the story and how Sellen’s just not all that smart, or at least as smart as she thinks she is. Hope you enjoyed the vid and thanks for commenting!
even through my first play thought i always seen this pursuit of knowledge at ANY cost was gonna end bad ( classic bad guy troupe in story telling) . I had high hopes she would stop at some point, or at the vary least attempt to understand how, why, or what about the Primeval Current that took away the use of the bodies of Azur and Lusat's body. but as you mentioned in the video, Knowledge is not the same as Intelligence. Great video! I'm glad i stumbled upon you're channel, Subscribing and delving into the rest of you're videos!
Thank you so much for the support, really appreciate it and glad you enjoyed the video!
I've played through the base game twice so far and Sellen fascinates me. I've seen both ends of her questline (whether you side with her or not) and I always knew her plan couldn't work. I noticed a lot of sorcery taboo similarities between her, Azur and Lusat: All of them lost their bodies in the pursuit of knowledge (or something else). So in some way, I was expecting something bad to happen Plus she had a puppet of herself in Seluvis' secret basement so you know she kinda planned this? Like having to be acquaintances with him, possibly?
@@Thereaperofcrows not to mention that it’s a fromsoft game, NPCs don’t always have the happiest endings 😂. The puppet in Seluvis’ basement was definitely a contingency plan she had. They could’ve had some sort of friendship in the past, but they seemed estranged in the game from what I remember. She’s definitely one of the more interesting characters. Hope you enjoyed the video, and thanks for the comment!
Sellen and seluvis know each other i think. He refers you to her during the ranni quest then she explain the radahn sitch
Her quest line actually has a Secret Ending. In order to get it, you MUST NOT go looking for Lusat when she asks you to. Instead, do the rest of her quest as you normally would and side with her against Jerren at the Academy. Rest at the Site Of Grace after you beat him and you will find that she hasn't become a Graven Mass. She gives you the Glintstone Kris to mark the quest complete and remains the new Head of the Academy in Human form.
@ no way! I wonder why that changes the outcome. Could’ve sworn there wasn’t one since I went through all the dialogue, must’ve missed something 😅 thanks for the input and hope you enjoyed the video!
There’s still no known way to save him? It seems like the only person you can save from death is Boggart, although I’m not sure if that’s a bug.
Nope. Maybe if you just decide to ignore him and not kill him, but you’re still not really saving him from the harm the Two Fingers did. Hope you enjoyed the video, and thanks for the comment!
Those monsters are getting clobbered
Imagine paying for therapy talks
I used to be a really big hothead when I was younger leading into my teen years. As I've grown I've gotten much calmer in general and better at controlling my anger. I don't see it as a negative emotion, It's all about control. When you learn to control it it can be used as a tool to get things done with the energy and adrenaline it gives you as I've done.
Same could be said for just about any emotion. Thanks for sharing and I'm glad you've gotten a grip on your anger, it's tough but realizing you're always in control is eye opening!
"He who is not angry when there is just cause for anger is immoral. Why? Because anger looks to the good of justice. And if you can live amid injustice without anger, you are immoral as well as unjust." St. Thomas Aquinas
love the quote! Thanks for commenting and hope you enjoyed the short!
Yessir glad to see another video from you after a while. Love Blaidd. I don't remember if I said this on one of your other videos, but I'd like to see what you think about stuff relating to the frenzied flame and those characters when you get the chance.
Work's been taking up a lot of time lately along with life in general. I do remember your comment, I'm working on it haha just have to finish getting all the footage. Frenzied flame is my favorite part of Elden Ring but there's just so much, would probably be later video (currently getting footage in Leyndell so imagine). I'll keep working on smaller character breakdowns like this one in the meantime though. Appreciate your support and hope you enjoyed the video 🤝
@@Psych_Lore hey no rush man I get it. That's awesome to hear that you're working on it. it's my favorite ending and I love all the lore and stuff surrounding it. I'll be waiting, I got that bell on my man. I did enjoy this video and will be watching anything else you put out in the meantime.
Why do diaphragm breathing for the box breathing thing? Personally it always seems to me that a deep chest breath can be more satisfying. The best "sigh" sorta feelings when you feel like you need to take a deep breath for me always come from my chest because I feel like my lung capacity is less via diaphragm.
So usually diaphragm breathing actually provides a deeper breath than chest breathing. You may feel like it’s more because you may move your chest farther than your belly, but as far as I know you actually take a deeper breath through your diaphragm than trough your chest. If breathing through your chest works for you, then keep doing it though. Hope this helped and hope you enjoyed the video!
Thanks for the analogy and amazing content. You need to play, and also listen to DS2: “Bearer of the curse, seek souls. Larger, more powerful souls. Seek the King, that is the only way. Lest this land swallow you whole… as it has so many others… “This quote seems to echo themes of destiny, power, and the inevitable struggle against overwhelming forces. It has a somber, almost fatalistic tone, suggesting that the quest for power and purpose is not just a choice but a necessity to avoid being consumed by the world’s challenges. The phrase “lest this land swallow you whole” implies that the journey is perilous, and without pursuing greater power, the character risks being destroyed or lost like many before them. This could be interpreted as a metaphor for the human condition, where striving for purpose and growth is essential to avoid being overwhelmed by life’s difficulties.”
Nothing beats anxiety like slaying a 300 ft monster 🤣🤙🏽
I think this applies to many many video games and not just Dark souls 🙂 Skyrim for example
It damaged my mental health
sorry but isnt it just abput any gam,e?
I wouldn’t recommend From games to people with mental health issues. They are frustrating to the point of breakdown. Also, I have relatives literally addicted to Elden ring so I really don’t see the point. There are better games for that.
I'm no doctor but I do know this: Souls games are a dopamine vampire.
Don't forget Demon Souls!! The remake is amazing!
I’m going through a heartache and ER is helping me (but I’m loosing sleep haha)
Enjoyed the video! Keep dropping more content!
Love this pairing with CBT! Im thinking of making a video in terms of archetypes and the personal unconscious. Love that your video was suggested. *bows to Elden Lord* im still learning how to play. This is my forst Souls game. Wishing your channel more success!
Worst game for mental health. The absolute worst.
Skateboarding does this too
it's kinda silly and cringe :3
What if I told you...people lie about their emotional state on the internet? Fromsoft games don't offer anything unique except that as a popular media franchise that derives it's notoriety from being difficult, it creates a mindset that you don't want to be the one person who didn't beat X boss or didn't get past X part of the game so you struggle despite these things potentially even to greater levels of mental damage than supposedly is being solved to feel like part of a grander community of people who did X thing. Any feeling of a grander sense of accomplishment from this is artificial, it's the same as a dopamine hit from playing a mobile game, it's part of the design feature to get you back to the well.
No video game gives me such a sense of fulfillment like a From Soft game. I went from sucking ass to demolishing invaders in DS2 and DS3. Learned to overcome fear and anxiety in order to focus on achieving a goal. These games are my go-to example of how videogames can serve as a training ground for the mind.
such a great video much love
It builds RESILIENCE and a Never Quit Mindset. I ASSURE YOU. IT CARRIES OVER TO EVERY STRESSFUL SITUATION IN LIFE.
Wow! I'm a pharmacist/gamer and very interested in mental health. I'm so glad I found your channel. Are you on Instagram?
overcoming a tough challenge feels good no feeling like it i think except being able to do extreme sports well probably.
In the end we understood nothing.
I just finished my bachelors degree in applied psychology this summer (yay) and I've played the same souls games you have with the addition of DS2. So I was really stoked to see this video pop up in UA-cam's recommendations. I think you're really on to something, especially the part of avoidance. You might be familiar with 'Acceptance & Commitment Therapy' or 'ACT' for short. Basically and possibly _badly_ explained: with ACT you help somebody become aware of how they avoid problems and then help them replace that behavior by having strive for a value instead. And I think in Fromsoft games you partially do that first part of ACT: you become aware of your tendency to avoid things but then accept 'the bad thing' and get a massive reward from overcoming it! Usually Fromsoft eases you into that behavior too. A good example I think is in DS1. The very first enemy you face has a simple solution: flee! But afterwards you get a chance to overcome that first obstacle without an escape route and that starts an entire journey where fleeing is never the answer (anymore). Isn't that just the coolest?! Ah oops, long comment. Anyway, cool vid!
I literally just killed one of the black knights and Havel the Rock an hour ago... after leaving dead burg i met 4 crystal golems plus a hydra. My unlucky ass took a path that leads me to another black knight😭😭😭😭
I love this, keep doing what you’re doing, you don’t understand how many people you are helping, it’s amazing, good stuff!
These games teach you that if you stay patient, learn from yoyr mistakes, and try again and again, the sky's the limit.
Psychedelics are just an exceptional mental health breakthrough. It's quite fascinating how effective they are against depression and anxiety. Saved my life.
Can you help with the reliable source I would really appreciate it. Many people talk about mushrooms and psychedelics but nobody talks about where to get them. Very hard to get a reliable source here in Australia. Really need!
Yes, dr.porassss. I have the same experience with anxiety, depression, PTSD and addiction and Mushrooms definitely made a huge huge difference to why am clean today.
I wish they were readily available in my place. Microdosing was my next plan of care for my husband. He is 59 & has so many mental health issues plus probable CTE & a TBI that left him in a coma 8 days. It's too late now I had to get a TPO as he's 6'6 300+ pound homicidal maniac. He's constantly talking about killing someone. He's violent. Anyone reading this Familiar w/ BPD know if it is common for an obsession with violence.
Is he on instagram?
Yes he is dr.porassss
Like many games, movies, pieces of art and literature, I think people can take really good lessons form games. I think people absolutely can learn resiliency. patience and discipline from Souls games. However, people can also learn that they need to spend all their time playing Elden Ring and never go outside. They can learn that the most important thing in the world is how to assemble the perfect build. Sure, you can get good things out of playing the game, but you can also turn into a salty judgmental elitist. It depends on what you decide to learn from the game.
We start off powerless. We are nobody special, no one to miss. Then we fall. Then we learn. Then we stand. The Fromsoft games are all about perseverance in the face of adversity. The odds are very much not in our favor. There's other games where you are literally unstoppable, a power trip from beginning to end. And other games where you are on the back foot the whole way through. But with Fromsoft, we start on the back foot, push forward, and become the warrior we were meant to be.
As someone with mental health issues, I wish I could enjoy dark souls but I ended up falling asleep when I play it.
why i think games are somewhat beneficial to life is because of this one quote, "how you do anything, is how you do everything." notice how you play and how you interact with things in life
sorry but what weapon are you using ?
having played all the soulsborne game, I don't get angry in fights anymore, I noticed in elden ring, a lot of the things that tied me down in DS weren't there, I didn't care if I lost souls, what mattered more was that I got back to that boss to try it again. I just wish I could take that same laissez faire approach in real life, I think because I haven't been able to take the stakes off the table for real life, like I can in a souls game. So instead I veg out on youtube all day and get nothing I want to get done, done. I think because that fear of the unknown is still present for me, video games have certainty, I know I'll beat any boss or game I tackle, because I've proven to myself I can do that. So the major issue is I haven't built up that experience in real life enough, to feel the same level of certainty.
Reading through these comments and listening to your video...........I didn't think of the possibility of these games teaching patience, and getting people out of depression,
Souls games are harsh, punishing and don’t tolerate mistakes. It scared me for years. I thought I didn’t have time for these games until my depression I suffered since my childhood took another turn and Elden Ring was released. I bit the bullet and got into souls games with Elden ring. Normally when I tilted in a singleplayer game, I cheese, cheat to save some time but when I played Elden ring I felt like the game was trying to teach me something not punish me. I felt like it says to me “don’t push all the buttons and be aware of your actions no matter how hard it is and how underleveled your character is” whenever I felt like it I beat all the bosses I strugle with in a few tries. I realised Depression and intolerancy and impulsivity that come with it affected how I play games. Elden Ring taught me to overcome anxiety, depression and anger issues I couldn’t ovrrcome before. During my gameplay I was more aware of my actions, I took my time, didn’t rush anything. I didn’t think I’d stand that challenging game but fell in love with it later on. When I beat Malenia I was sure it was all mental. If you rush, be greedy and scared she beats the hell out of you.
very interesting! I suffer from a multitude of conditions including anxiety, depression and ocd. From childhood on I was told that I am never good enough. I feel that is part of why I am so keen on these games. I started with DS Remastered and it's tough for me, having had no experience and not being young any more. But there is so much determination because I want to prove myself I can in fact beat it. And I need 10 x more than other players. Next goal for me is to own/ play Elden Ring. I love everything about it. The world, the art style backstory,, bosses etc. As I have very little money, it helps me with setting goals (I will put that and that amount away to be able to purchase a Playstation and the Game by that and that point), focus and work towards it until I will have the ultimate reward and sense of accomplishment when I finally be able to hold it in my hand, start it the first time and will do my 'Time To Git Good' post. It's also a type of escapism of course, as the real world gives me major anxiety. Which of course can be both good and bad. Fascinating how strong out reward system is. Thank you for the video.
Jesus Christ is the King of all Kings ❤️
Never thought to look at games from a therapeutic perspective. Great video, keep’em coming!
Thanks for the comment, glad you’re liking the content! Will do!
