It’s absolutely an upfront cost that takes years to see any sort of payback. Depending on the project, sometimes using regular batt insulation is the way to go.

This is not a problem at all. If you're the contractor you are ripping these customers off telling them it is wrong! It's not! 200 year old homes have this and are straighter and stronger than modern floors. If you are the customer, get rid of the evil contractors that are stealing you blind.

As long as no water is touching the wood it will be fine. They did that because they built a roof over the whole house. See the floor 8n context.

Wonder if you could just pour concrete after removing floor as a layer of protection but that might be a horrible idea. Seems like removing all the 2 by 4 is not worth is because that’s the foundation of a house that is already built.

What actual problems are you seeing? Any rot? Any soft spots? That floor is most likely from a time before concert slabs were used. If it's held that long without issue, then don't break it now. Just my opinion.

@karenbethjones I've personally never tired it, but I've heard a lot of good things about bored/driven piles. Given your situation, I think it might work ok, but you'll have to decide for yourself. I believe you use them as the peirs in a typical peir and beam foundation. (Then add your vapor barrier, sump, new flooring, etc..)

Not uncommon, depending on your region and when the home was built. Wood being way more available than concrete. A good sign, your home doesn't have a drainage or termite problem.
