    Greetings, I am currently exporing the spaces function, but I noticed I can't actually delete spaces that have been created in the spaces tab. Some of these spaces seemingly have been created by the evernote team themselves.... I was wondering if you know when evernote is going to enable to fucntionality to actually delete spaces in the spaces tab?

    I do not use the Daily Note as I have an ongoing To Do List with Checkboxes. All I need to do is change the date on it each evening after I have amended it & it is readily available in my Shortcuts. My method also means I only have one ongoing note each day and do not end up with 365 by the end of the year. However, for those that do "journal", I can see this would be handy. * Suggestion: Daily Note would be better if 1. You could select from the WHOLE EN Template Gallery, not just the three that you showed. (I might then enable it occasionally as required with various templates). 2. It seems to me that you would need to edit the template daily (from the three supplied) to suit you unless they can be initially edited and saved prior to using Daily Note.

    Suggestion: If 'Stacks' could be moved to a 'Space", this would be a super powerful feature!

    Thanks Dave - very informative video. I will now be creating Spaces for Town Council Committees & Sub Committees as one Note with MANY Backlinks to other Committee Notes is becoming too large. Ref End of Year tidy up: I do exactly what you suggested; create an Archive Notebook and dump the previous year's Notes in it. (Search/Filtering can find all the Notes based on Creation Date). I also Duplicate specific Notes like To Do Lists , Tag them as "Backup" & move them to a Backup Notebook. This has saved me more than once! Stacks are also useful (I'm too used to PC's with Folders & Files as containers - I hail from the MSDOS days!!). I am also a fan of Tags & spent a long time considering what I needed and "stacked" them as well e.g. Financial, Shopping, Receipt, Online, Membership, Insurance, Tax etc. Anything that falls under a Financial heading. All my notes have a maximum of 3 Tags which I amend regularly. I minimised it to this so specific notes can be searched for which fall in the same "category" e.g. Financial, Receipt, Insurance or DIY, Kitchen, Electrical etc... Web Clipper is also a God Send for collecting information! Looking forward to your other videos.

    Spaces do not segregate _namespaces_ for notebook names, tags, etc.... they do not create a separate _context_ for notebooks. 😞

    Hi Dave ... when on your next call with Evernote ... maybe you could ask them why the most basic function of exporting a PDF from a note does not retain proper spacing and format ... after all of these years as a paid customer ... Evernote will still "not" create an accurate PDF document as it appears in the actual note ... and yes, I have written to them over and over ... I'll never understand why this is not a "foundational" feature they should correct ... so many good changes with the new takeover, but still one can't export a true PDF doc .... maybe your voice would make a difference ... as always, appreciate your videos!!

    Good job being consistent with the videos! GTD really helps giving purpose to note taking, instead of Just Gathering data for the sake of it. Quick question though, what if after a while I have gathered a lot of "reference material" and its piling up? Is doing a review or cleanse of notes part of the GTD methodology as well? If not how would you approach that?

    • @daveedwardsmedia
      @daveedwardsmedia 3 дні тому

      Going through all my reference material is something I do 3-4 times a year but I err on the side of keeping it as my system is digital and doesn’t get in my way. Recently I needed a file from reference that I last used about 5 years ago!

    Thanks for these good news. Are these spaces another level of hierarchy in Evernote? Until now there are the Stacks with Notebooks inside and each Notebook has Notes inside (Stacks > Notebooks > Notes). This was a limitation of Evernote to support only 3 levels of hierarchy. Are these spaces now another level like: Spaces > Stacks > Notebooks > Notes?

  • @DougLietz
    @DougLietz 5 днів тому

    Thanks for this video Dave. I took some time to play around with the new Spaces features today, and started to get really excited when I saw that the underlying architecture allowed for mirroring of data at more than one location in my database. However, I now see that this is managed at the hierarchy level of Notebooks instead of with standalone, individual notes. Over the years I have minimized my dependency on Evernote folders (Notebooks), so moving a mirrored copy of one of my (large) Notebooks into a Space is, unfortunately for me, not particularly useful. If you would like to share my thoughts on your next call with the Evernote Experts Group, I'd be really interested to know if anyone else has expressed similar feedback... or if I fall into an outlier category... wouldn't be the first time (LOL).

    There was a video many many moons ago of David showing us his home setup for GTD when he lived in California back in 2008, I believe. I remember him carrying around a digital recorder for voice memos and reminders. I have experimented with all digital systems, then all paper, hence the 80 or so hanging folders that are now empty. My system today is a hybrid of both systems, utilizing tags in my digital format to quickly find information, as well as searchable PDFS. Ever so often, I test my system to see if I can find information within 30 seconds, that is always a fun exercise to do. You will always find gaps when testing and it will allow you become better at filing reference information. Just like FAQ's I have a digital footprint file that I log where I am putting stuff that is not in the office to help me remember. For example, tote bin label number 4 has all the Christmas dining and serveware.

    Great video. Fair note for those with ADHD: we tend to NOT feel drawn to do what we’re supposed to do (or often even WANT to do). So I always have to question what I feel compelled to do. People often don’t realize this applies to FUN, not just boring work (ADHD). (Heck, I even have to force myself to relax and play video games even if I WANT to play them!! I will do everything else but sit down and play). Good times. Lol

    Been using this system for years. Tags are so much more powerful and flexible than Folders. The only problem I have is that Evernote on my iPhone frequently doesn’t load all of the files with a tag despite my clicking on the tag to view its files. Right now I’m looking at an upcoming event tag with over 20 files and my iPhone Evernote reports “No notes found”. Hopefully, the Evernote team will realize how much better Tags are than Folders for productivity and put some staff on fixing the bugginess across their platforms for viewing tagged files. Thanks for the vid!

    I use the journaling template each day. I really like having my journal in EN. Questions: am I able to modify the template? Why does EN keep creating duplicate, blank templates? It is a minor annoyance but I would like to modify the template to eliminate the extra blank space and remove a couple of the sections. Otherwise I really like the daily notes.

    The biggest missing part now of Evernote tasks is tagging them, as this will really be so helpful for us just tagging the task as a call or not, instead of us moving the task to a notebook called calls and for us to tag that note as @calls. Evernote needs to have a team who will be really touching base heavily on its base, we are still missing the copy formatting tool that is really making writing a big note a nightmare. Thanks Dave for your video and setup, looking forward for more.

    My answer comes from another school of thought: Jim Benson's Personal Kanban, A quick summary: Personal Kanban is a system for managing personal tasks and responsibilities by visually representing them on a board, typically with columns like "To Do," "Doing," and "Done," allowing individuals to prioritize and focus on one task at a time, improving productivity by limiting the number of concurrent tasks ("Work In Progress") and providing a clear overview of their workflow, essentially applying the principles of the Kanban method used in manufacturing to everyday life; this approach helps with time management, reducing distractions, and achieving better focus on completing tasks one at a time. Tasks are displayed on a board as cards, making it easy to see the status of each task at a glance. By restricting the number of tasks in the "Doing" column, individuals are encouraged to focus on finishing one task before starting another. Can be applied to various aspects of life, including work, personal projects, and household chores. Developed from the Kanban system used in Toyota's production lines. Historically Personal Kanban arose from an attempt to reorganize a software division for Microsoft in India during the 80s and 90s that was performing in a very subpar manner. They utilized the theory of constraints to improve performance and nearly doubled the efficiency of the team. The team of developers would spend 40% of their labor, as was required by policy at the time, to fully plan and estimate costs of all of the projects and their many steps for prioritization and planning. They tracked the work in each phase and found that they had too many testers and too few programmers. They changed the prioritization process and had customers bid up work in the queue, and only the next 7 actions or so would be kept in the buffer at a time for the development team. Finally more developers were added so that the testing department was not idle. This would later lead to Kanban taking over the software development world, and Personal Kanban would be eventually become a movement. When time is spent on over planning, especially when conditions can change, this is waste. You need a small buffer of next actions ready, so that you do not spend time idle, but at the same time you cannot focus on an entire wall of next actions. Further it is difficult for a person to focus on more than 2 or 3 actions at a time. GTD teaches some useful ideas to those using a personal Kanban board: 1. Use a calendar for appointments, and only for appointments. 2. Group your backlog actions by context 3. Put someday actions at the very bottom of the backlog column or section, and more important (urgent or high value or both) near the top. 4. Use an inbox with the two minute rule for things before they get put onto the Kanban Board or calendar.
