I read that Modern Family is so popular in Southeast Asian countries that it's actually managed to change public opinion on important social issues. The culture in places like Japan and Korea was rather homophobic, and a young actor's career could be demolished by gay rumors. But audiences have fallen in love with Mitch and Cam, who are the most popular couple on the show, so they're kind of where the US was in the mid-8Os. That must be very gratifying for the people who created the show : "Hey, they're basically just like any other couple." Well done, sir! (Maybe in the future someone will help gain acceptance for......poppy seeds? Oh, I'm not kidding : in Korea you can go to prison for eating a poppy seed bagel. Totally illegal. But they're also getting more adventurous about Western food, too, so maybe we poppy seed-loving desperadoes can now dream of visiting someday without doing a preemptive poppy seed purge before! 😅😊)

Oh yes, the infamous "baguette in the shopping bag" cliché, - I've been citing that for years. The first time was on a clever Facebook thread about recurring tropes you see constantly in tv/movies, that have no corresponding existence in real life. I even elaborated on it: if a woman is carrying the bag, there will be something green and leafy next to it. But if it's a man, the baguette will be accompanied by a giant 4 lb. slab of meat. Modern Family was great at another familiar plot device : a big holiday is coming up, elaborate plans are made, so what could possibly go wrong? But of course it's a disaster. I loved their Express Christmas and Three Turkeys episodes.
