    awesome! bought this a while ago and have been plodding along but this is very helpful! just installed the steam deck but my dream is to whip out my phone and play wherever. but in this post covid world, I'm more likely to be at home anyway so it's all good.

    That was a very good Quickstart guide, I just bought the game after watching this and been playing a bit the campaign myself. I just discover that you can open the Hatch and have a lot more of are area to SPOT the enemies, something I didn't knew. I guess there are a lot more things I don't know :D

    nice guide! I love what you've done with the sequel, it pains me that this game is so underrated, while i was watching I did see a small UI discrepancy though. In campaign options, victory point modifiers are displayed as a % increase or decrease in points, but when selecting a tank, it's victory point modifier is shown as for example, a 1.3X modifier, which is the same as saying +30%. It seems to me like they should use the same method to display modifiers. I know tiny complaint, but it does bug me just a little.

    • @GregoryAdamScott
      @GregoryAdamScott 4 роки тому

      You're right - I'll change that display in the next update, thanks! Edit: Change is in, will be live in the next minor update, likely later this week (or later today if any bugs emerge)

  • @35coleslaw

    Just curious, will there be any sound effects?

  • @GregoryAdamScott
    @GregoryAdamScott 7 років тому

    There's a few bugs in the Proof of Concept version that is available for download, but if you're interested in the ongoing development of the game you can always get the current work-in-progress version on github. You'll have to install Python and a few libraries, but once you do you're good to go: github.com/sudasana/armcom2

  • @35coleslaw
    @35coleslaw 7 років тому

    Looking forward to seeing this becoming more fleshed out. How much tank variety will you be adding? Would it be possible to take command of an armored car?

    • @GregoryAdamScott
      @GregoryAdamScott 7 років тому

      Armoured cars will definitely be included as AI-controlled friendly forces under your command, and they may end up as an option for the player-controlled vehicle. But the one thing that is lost with commanding an armoured car is that they normally have fewer crew than most tanks, and managing your crew is going to be one of the core parts of the planned game.

    • @35coleslaw
      @35coleslaw 7 років тому

      Maybe by 1 or 2 crew (which, based off the crew count of the Panzer 35(t) you're using in this video, can be 25-50% less then the intended crew size), but I'm sure there are a fair few armored cars that still have a reasonable crew count for what you're going for. For example, the M8 Greyhound and the SdKfz 234 (aka the "Puma") had a crew of 4. Commanding a Puma armored car as the Soviets come steamrolling through with IS-2's and T-34's would be an interesting experience.

    • @GregoryAdamScott

      I will definitely keep it in mind for the future!

  • @carloreytansiongco9563
    @carloreytansiongco9563 7 років тому

    I liked the build so far. But like me, you've perhaps also read Tim Stone's Flare Path article which recently covered this and got disenchanted... I'm glad you're not rigid, and is going back to a single tank centric game. Though I'd imagine the first reason you left that is because of AI coding problems or something else? Will you be considering allied tanks could be commanded or would have rudimentary formation AI? Anyway, I'm curious where you'd take your return to this format :)

    • @GregoryAdamScott
      @GregoryAdamScott 7 років тому

      I think initially the difficulty of displaying unit stacks in a single hex led me to try the squadron approach. It's difficult to cram a number of ASCII depictions into a hex without things getting very jumbled. Now, however, I see that much of the appeal of the game is in the impact and detail of individual vehicles and squads. So what I'm going to try is a stacking system where the player can scroll to view individual vehicles and squads that are in the same map hex. I think the best solution for friendly units is to give them orders and then have the AI take over, that way the player still feels like they are in the position of the tank commander. If I can focus on that single core element, I hope that the rest of the game mechanics will fall into place!

    • @carloreytansiongco9563
      @carloreytansiongco9563 7 років тому

      Also the original ArmCom/Patton's Best also puts abstraction of unit placements and terrain into place, leaving the player's imagination to fill in the gaps. With ArmCom 2's actual terrain map, it would be a tad more difficult to approximate AI tactics when it comes to terrain - or at least more work to code. Or maybe perhaps I'm just overthinking things. Then again staying with a hex format makes it easier as compared to grid-less games. I love the ArmCom you made, its my go to game whenever my internet is down, and if I'd find an easy way to port it to my phone, I'd play it a lot.

    • @GregoryAdamScott
      @GregoryAdamScott 7 років тому

      So far it's only been a visualization problem, not an AI problem. The core trouble is that each depiction has to take up one character cell, and the hexes I'm using get filled up very quickly. ArmCom 1 used a much smaller default font and a larger grid of characters in the window, so there was more room to display units. But I like the current style a great deal (I learned to program on a C64 as a kid). Working with hexes is great - but it requires some special math, this page was crucial in helping me code: www.redblobgames.com/grids/hexagons/

  • @axtmann

    This is probably the question every programmer rolls their eyes at but how moddable would this game be? I like WW2 games but it would be exciting to see this applied to something fictional like Maschinen Krieger.

    • @GregoryAdamScott
      @GregoryAdamScott 7 років тому

      Most of the unit data is contained in XML files, so if you wanted to mod in your own units you could. Core gameplay mechanics are hardcoded, however, although with future things like unit skills and other special abilities I'll try to make them as flexible as possible. In the end, though, it's an open source game, so one could always fork it and make a sister game with a different theme!

    • @axtmann

    I like your approach to ANSI (ASCII?) art. There's a strong focus on simple, recognizable clusters and it avoids a lot of the granular confusion that many roguelikes can suffer from.

    • @GregoryAdamScott

    I've tried the released Proof of Concept so far. Looks solid, I might miss the good old drama ala-Fury of the first game, but I can foresee a decent game in the 2nd - provided the enemies and AI are good. I'd imagine the rougelike aspect is maintaned due to the difficulty when your outmatched Panzer II and IIIs begin facing the dreaded T-34 later in the campaign... here's to hoping you get to upgrade to the later tanks as well. Do you plan to add other functions for the units? Like smoke rounds for example. Also I am yet to fully grasp the concept of "Steps". What do they mean exactly?

  • @MechaMaestro

    Looking good so far, loved the original, can't wait to see what you do with this! I don't remember if you mentioned it in the video but Will you be able to set what rank you are at the start of a campaign? Maybe start as a single tank commander at the start and try to work your way up to commanding more tanks?

    • @GregoryAdamScott
      @GregoryAdamScott 8 років тому

      Right now the campaign is still being planned, and I'm not yet sure how it will work. I think that in most campaigns your battlegroup will be fairly small to start, but yes as you progress through a campaign you'll be able to command more vehicles. Your core units will also become more experienced and work better together as a team.

    Just had my best run. Started the Canada campaign from the beginning with the strict rules and perma-death settings. Made it through 18 days to mid-September and the border of Belgium and Holland. After numerous fights with Panthers and anti-tank guns, and after having 5 of my tanks knocked out and bailing out successfully, I run into a lone MkIV on the 18th day. I'd become too confident, so instead of finding a nice hull down position I just stopped and took him on. My shell bounced, his didn't - tank explodes - game over man! Great stuff!
