The Reason Rack is a Semi-Modular Synthesizer

Hey! In this video I will be explaining how the Reason Studios Reason Rack is essentially a modular synthesizer/instrument. You can take this to the extreme and use LFOs to generate and modulate sound - or you could simply plug the output of a synth's ADSR into any CV input within the Reason Rack. Let me know if you have any questions or if I missed anything. toskabyss NEW EP MOVE...

Hey thanks! These are from an Ableton Pack Drive and Glow. www.ableton.com/en/packs/drive-and-glow/ They sound great. I have them running into some EQ, G-comp, saturation and Knock Clipper.

have you noticed the noise ? do you know of any way to solve it?
I haven't noticed any noise at all! Where are you getting it? Notice it showing up when you enable anything like the verb or distortion? Does it go away if you turn the noise level down or the tone level down?

Dang that is awesome! It is such an awesome piece. I went from having 10+ pieces of hardware instruments down to just the ND3p in a period of 2 years. I hope your ND brings you as much joy as mine does!!
@@toskabyss Yeah, a beautifully sounding synth that you can hit with a drumstick 🙃. Pure joy!

Damn it. Fucking fire again. All of these are 👌
Thanks my friend!
Dope af! I love your style and your tones. What kind of modulation are you utilizing?
Thanks! I'm using a re-amp box to send the TR606 samples to a fuzz pedal. I think I'm just doing a little delay, drive and reverb automation in Ableton in post.
Amazing talent - I’d have to use an arpeggiator and sequencer to achieve that
I appreciate that!! I 100% quantized this lol
This is dope! It'd be really cool to see what else is going on to make the track.

I didn’t buy a Nord Drum 3p… I bought a Nord Drum 2 with Nord Pad. 😆
I want to give one of the ND2s a spin
@ can’t wait for it to arrive. I had a Nord Modular Desktop/Rack decades ago and just love the unique Nord sound. I am a drummer and play acoustic drums and wanted to be able to disconnect the pads from the Nord Drum for a smaller desktop setup to sit alongside my other electronic music making gear mainly (Octatrack, Digitakt II, Syntakt, DFAM, etc). I’ll use the pads at times, but it will mostly be used as a sound source for both sampling and sequencing. Thanks for great Nord Drum videos. 👍
That sounds pretty good with the cycles. It adds a lot to it
Thanks yes I think you are right they pair nicely. It’s a great little pedal.
Lame af video. Ignore this clown.
Hmmmmm... I've never quite got along with the drum pads on Push, I just dont have the timing accuracy and feel to work with the smaller pads with consistency. However rudimentary my fingers drumming skills may be on maschine, I find it much more difficult on Push.
Totally agree. This is my second push and the sensitive settings on this one are spot on. Would love to check out Maschine one day.
Dood doesn't know how to manage his own cables and blames the drum machine. Hilarious
😆 fair
Hey, what sensitivity and threshold? When I have on thres 1 and sensitivity 20 my pad goes crazy, so much triggering without even touching the pads 🥴 do you think a stand would help? I’m abit sad here think my unit might be broke. You mainly want to play with hands, so abit disappointing.Great playing btw ,
Thank you!! Okay so from what I remember I am thresh 2 and sensitivity 18-19. I end up having to hit pretty hard and after a session my hands typically feel pretty rough. I found that using the thumbs was helpful
I’ve been using reason since R4 and using the combinator to build deep, layered instruments with crazy controls and all kinds of dynamic modulation has been one of my favorite parts. Getting into rack extensions like Front-8 and Janitor and then blending and combining CV signals is a whole different level.
Back when I left Reason around R9 I had no understanding of CV. It has been so much fun going and grabbing REs in 2024. I think if you have a DAW combined with the Reason Rack you’d be pretty much set and covered with everything you’d need.
I use Reason as a vst in FL, Ableton and Reaper, and have thought of it as a very flexible semimodular synth/fx for some time. Something like Europa or Complex can sound absolutely huge when playing several layers in different ranges, especially when you use the patchcords to modulate and create movement in the patches.
You are a step ahead of me! I am working on a Reason Rack is a Semi-modular Instrument Video. It is Crazy wow you can route the adsr from something like subtractor to a volume fader or panning of a mixer. It is unbelievably deep. Feels like infinite connections and possibilities.
Okay this is sick
Thanks!!!
Sorry but I am not sure you have the correct term, or only have it on a bit of a techincality. Multitimbral really means that one synth can respond to many MIDI Channels and therefore becomes 'many instruments at once out of the one box'. While you seem to be showing Layers, which are different synths/tones, they don't seem to be acting as discrete instruments each able to play different musical lines like Bass, Piano, Flute, Clarinet, etc. :-)
Dang.. you are 100% correct. I went back in to see if I could address the different instruments within the rack with separate midi channels and you cannot. However, using the players or matrix sequencer you could technically "play" or compose something multitimbral-ish within one Reason Rack patch. Also, the Reason Rack being able to send audio to separate channels within the daw feels sort of similar to the rear of something like a Nord Lead 4. You are correct though! Thanks!
@@toskabyss No worries. Multitimbral made a lot of sense in the 90s when you had one synth that you needed to have deliver many parts, M1, Proteus etc. Now with the DAW, Multi makes little sense seeing you would just instance another RRP VST as that gives the simplest way to Mix etc. :-)
So reason it’s self is multitimbral by your definition
@@LachieMcg Um Multitimbral is. as I noted, like a Montage or Fantom where it is playing back a full song sequence's parts at once: drums, bass, piano, pads, etc. Reason is a DAW which can do that but a different specification of device as such. Otherwise it is a bit like saying a donkey cart is equal to a F1 race car. Technically maybe but only in the most stretched of ways. :-)
It just means more than one timbre. But if you want to play this semantics game and please enjoy correcting people and play on
The thing I love most about Reason is how you can make musical and magical patches so easily, and yet it's not like with our features or is "simplistic" Also, the oscelrators are so beautiful and unique..like, I can NEVER replicate a patch in another synth, even with Subtractive because there's this tone and timbre no other synths can emulate..and don't even get me started with Friktion. I own so many object modeling VSTS and none do scratchy violins and fiddles like Friktion
I haven’t messed with Friktion yet I’ll have to give that a spin! I really love the sound of Reason’s synths. I have certain presets that are locked in my memory that I know I can reach to for specific sounds. I am also really enjoying exploring Europa.
I'm always super excited to see producers really getting the most out of my favorite software. Reason isn’t just a multitimbral instrument; it’s like this huge modular synth, effects box, and utility all rolled into one. Honestly, I don’t get why they decided to launch the Reason Rack as a VST3. They could’ve just convert the Combinator with all the cool devices already Reason offers. When it comes to picking samples in the NN-XT, you can grab them all at once by hitting Command+A or just clicking on the vertical bars next to the groups. Overall, the NN-XT is a really powerful sampler, but not many people have figured out how to use it effectively. I absolutely love the vibe of your sound. Finally, someone is using the Subtractor the way it’s meant to be!
Dang I super appreciate your comment! You are a step ahead of me as my next video is going to be how it’s a modular synth or something to that effect. I got into Reason a LONG time ago back around Reason 2.5. I primarily just used presets, then when reason+record merged into a full daw I mostly just made beats with samples and flipped samples. I had zero understanding of synths let alone CV. After a long hardware journey and coming back to Reason my mind is blown with all you can do. The idea of using subtractor’s adsr out to control a volume fader on a mixer. It feels beautifully endless.
@@toskabyss I'm really excited to hear that you're diving into this side of Reason in your videos! I have to say, I consider and feel myself to be a child of both samplers and synths. When I think of samplers, I don’t mean the modern ones like an MPC; I’m more nostalgic for devices like the AKAI-1000 or the Roland S-500. These machines from the late ’80s were revolutionary, allowing us to play multiple samples dynamically across different layers. My journey with Reason started way back at version 2.0 in 2002, and it felt like such a natural progression for me. I think there's a bit of a misunderstanding out there-perhaps partly due to how Reason presents itself-but I believe that, especially as a DAW, is an incredible synth on its own; it’s also the only program that really feels like a living, breathing sampler! You can literally multi-sample directly on each device! The NN-XT and its smaller cousin, the NN-19 (which is pretty cool because it can turn into a 12-bit, texture-filled sampler with just a click) are truly more versatile and powerful than any other samplers out there-especially when you consider their connectivity features. I've been a fan of your work for some time, especially your content about the Nord 3P, and I'm looking forward to following you even more closely. I’d love to share some insights that might be helpful for you and your followers as well! Keep up the aesthetic work you do.
@@aresoltero oh snap I have always just skipped over NN-19. I didn’t know it had a 12bit button. I feel like there is a lot to explore there. I agree about the misunderstanding. With all of the gear acquisition syndrome content that is floating about, the number one argument that I hear about hardware is “the tactile feel” or something like that. Reason really ticks that box I think. When I was switching from Reason to Ableton I was sort of irritated with Reason for having some of these slow processes. Slower to build patches and route things than Ableton. But now I have come to realize there was probably a reason for that (I’m sorry about the joke lol). But I can honestly say Reason sounds better and is more powerful than any hardware I’ve ever owned.
@@toskabyss On the NN-19, if you turn off the high-quality interpolation, those samples - particularly on the left side of the keys - really take on that signature vibe of 12-bit samples from the '90s. If you want to kick it up a notch and add some extra grit to the high frequencies, you can easily enable the low bandwidth option located on the left side, just off the screen. It really makes a difference! A video about the upcoming Nexus5 just popped up in my feed, and I watched it carefully. If someone involved in sound creation understands the power hidden in the Combinator in Reason, which can combine 80+ devices incl (13!) synths, many samplers & drum modules, utilities 35 Effect/Multi Effect units, and MIDI players, they would realize how much soft instruments like Nexus, or even Kontakt, fall short in comparison. I say this with regret, but Reason, unfortunately, has not supported its devices as much as it should have and has not created communities or a true platform where sound designers can fully unleash the power of Reason. They tried to do this with the Packs, but given that they’ve limited them to only 10 patches per Pack and offer them exclusively for free, they have undermined their effort from the outset and undervalued the creators.
Can I get recipe please?
AHH it has been a long time since I made this patch. I THINK it was a saw wave on Osc1 and saw wave a 5th up on Osc2. I think I am running the external output into the attenuator and then back into external input. I am using the attenuator to slightly bring in that overdrive sound. Lastly, in Ableton I am using a little bit of tape delay automation and I have another send that is fuzz pedal going into a very short reverb. Hope this helps!
I’m a huge fan of your videos! I hope you keep making them and growing your channel. 😊
Hey my friend thanks for the kind words! You are ridiculously talented and really have mastered your craft.
Great comparison I am planning on getting the hardware because I like the physical interaction and spontaneity, and usually sound is almost always better, but I think in most mixes either of the VST’s would be fine - as long as you don’t sweep the filter. That stepping in the Arturia is so bad it almost sounds like an intentional special effect. Korg’s VST still stepped but not anywhere near as bad. I have the Arturia ( barely used ), and out of curiosity was looking at the Korg VST since their Odyssey VST is awesome IMO, but I think I’ll stick with my original plan and use the Arturia when I need it and eventually get the hardware.
I have to agree - I love the versatility of the software but the spontaneity that arrives when patching hardware is hard to capture in the software realm.
r u modulating an fx send in this ??
Yup sort of! I am running this into ableton and I did some post processing there
How do you mix this is it just eqing one master track with the stereo out or do you record midi and then playback into Ableton on separate tracks?
You are correct, I record midi, clean up any timing issues, then I pan all my low end to left channel and high end to right channel and mix and master in Ableton.
@@toskabyss awesome thanks! i just got a 3p and was wondering the best practice for mixing. sounds dope! One extra question -- if you do that it pretty much is dual mono right? what about any type of stereo fx or delays?
@@mrfuriousmother You got it - it is dual mono. In the mixer section you have an option to pan each of the 6 channels left or right. Delay and Reverb are essentially sends. I always throw my low end (kicks, basses) left and high end right. If I put a big reverb on the snare (or any high end stuff) it will show up in the low end left channel. There is something really cool that comes from processing the low end with those send artifacts in there - happy accidents there. If you are a masochist you can record in all midi - mute all but one track - record that to audio - rinse repeat 5 more times. I used to do that but I found my mixes/tracks were cooler if I just focused on the two channels coming out that back. Hope that helps!
reason is one of the only DAWs where you don't need 3rd party plug ins. this is a gamechanger for sure
Reason is sooo powerful
Reason was my first introduction to making music on a computer and I remember being so confused but thinking it was so cool that you could rewire stuff on the virtual back of the racks. It feels like a “vintage” VST that’s been kept alive somehow all this time and still sounds really good.
Same! I had Reason 2.5 as a supplement to Cubase. I mostly just flipped through presets. Going back in after having a bunch of hardware sort of feels like I got gifted a bunch of new gear. I am really blown away at how flexible and fun Subtractor is with it being like 25 years old.
yeah, paul mcartneys christmas song! totally...
Reason is such a cool platform. I miss playing with it.
Agree! It’s really fun coming back to it after a couple of years.
Oh my god yes. I started with Reason, then moved over to Live and never stopped using it as a dependent. Reason Rack really changed the game for me, and it's not the most janky thing in the world. Great stuff, thanks for covering it!
