PTP Fishing - A Lake Kurwongbah Trifecta
With all the rain we have had it has been difficult to get out for a fish. Lake Kurwongbah proved to be my best option and although I was questioning my choice of venue early, it proved to be a pretty amazing morning on the water.
The end result was a Lake Kurwongbah trifecta. I caught a Golden perch, an Australian bass and a Southern saratoga in the same fishing session.
I pretty special day for me.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all and I will see you in 2025.

In many ways this is a bonus video for me. I have been exploring lots of new options lure wise in recent times and this trip was about locking them in and making sure I am happy with hook set ups etc. I did this at Enoggera Reservoir, not expecting too much in the way of fish, but as always Enoggera has a way of surprising you. After visiting Tackleworld Lawnton and seeing how many customers were interested in the fishing at Lake Kurwongbah. Especially what lure options they may need. I decided to put together a video about what my favourite lures to use there are, in the hope that it may help people looking to give lure fishing at Lake Kurwongbah a try. You can get the majority of the lures shown in this video at Tac...

I finally have got around to putting this video together. I picked up a few lures to try in the freshwater at the Lure Expo in Fernvale to have a play with. I headed to Lake Kurwongbah to give them a swim and to see if I can pick up a few fish on them. It was fun to try some new things. I hope you enjoy the video.

PTP Fishing - My Take on flathead fishing with lures

With the flathead fishing on the improve at the moment in South East Queensland, it seems fitting to do a video that covers my thoughts on targeting them with lures. I hope you enjoy it and get enough information out of the video to go and have a crack at it yourself.
PTP Fishing - Chasing escapee bass
Переглядів 1942 місяці тому
From a fishing perspective the real win after all the rain is that many of our waterways have had a good flush and quite a few fish have escaped from our various dams in SE Queensland. These fish provide another option to go and target ( if you are prepared to go to the effort) for local anglers.

I have always enjoyed trying new gear and testing products for Fishing Monthly magazine. You don't always get the opportunity to compare products, so I jumped at the chance to try the Shimano SLX 150 and Curado 200HG bait cast reels side by side. The written editorial is in the October 2024 edition of Fishing Monthly Magazine.

Congrats Peter. What an incredible quality session to end the year. Memorable!!
Thanks Nick. Was a fantastic way to finish my 2024 freshwater adventures. The quality of the fish was outstanding and the trifecta a true bonus.
That vibe doing the damage mate great color aswell👌👌
With the V Blades going off the market I needed to find an affordable option. Very happy with the lure and having found it.
@PTPFishing certainly do the job Peter
Very effective
Really enjoyed the video. What size inline single hook do you find works the best on the Tt flash point?
Sorry for the slow reply. It is a size 4 Mustad Kaju Inline single. This has been the best size for me.
Awesome mate 👌👌
Thanks Michael, tough going fishing wise here with all the rain. They have been a little tough to find.
@PTPFishing yep went in a comp with Ray on Sunday tough day didn't register a fish but it's always good to get out any chance I can get mate 👌

@@PTPFishing 👍👍👌👌
Just wondering where the launch point is
There is a car park and launch area at Forgans Cove.
What zone were you in
The public kayak fishing zone.
Hi Peter, Thanks again for another great video. I was wondering if you have fished Enoggera since we had all that rain? Have all the fish gone over the spillway? I hope not as l was just starting to work out how to fish it. Cheers Michael
Hi Michael, I haven’t. It has been closed to paddle craft since I returned from a trip down south. Some fish will go, but not that many. It is the time of the year that they push up the system, not down, so hopefully they will just push further up the reservoir.
hey peter, i live nearby so i wanted to give fishing at enoggera a go after seeing your videos and went out early on my canoe, but got skunked twice now :( should i keep trying or how could i improve my success rate? thanks
ive also been wanting to try some soft plastics in the dam. do you have any recommendations? i was thinking a yabbie imitation could work well.
Ian it is well worth persisting. It has not been an easy year to find the fish and even when you do, loose one and they seem to disappear. I have done a couple of videos with tips for Enoggera, they are well worth watching. Outside of that. 5cm lipless crank baits and fishing close to the lily pads are the keys and after that it is just persistence. Time on the water will help you crack the code.
Have never had much joy with plastics there. If I was going to fish one, it would be a 3 or 3.5 inch paddle tail soft plastic on a 1/6th or 1/4oz jig head. Again rolled along the lily pads edges.
I personally use divers in enoggera, they get the job done, I usually come out the end of the day with at least 3-4 bass, I use stumpjumpers and the samaki ds60, but really anything that dives around ~4 metres usually works.
4 metre divers, will give that a try. Not too many areas you can fish those. Interesting.
I don't think a overnight soak is absolutely a must, most people leave them overnight because your not allowed on the water after sundown or before sunrise. Ive been to dams where ive been checking them every 4 hours or so through the night. Always had a bigger haul checking them through the night compared to a leave alone soak overnight...pot placement is a major factor...the amount of people who redclaw the dams is hectic lol. Ive been at the wall where the Brisbane river starts when they opened up the flood gates. The water below the wall had dropped by lunchtime the next day. All i could see was old Opera house traps in different stages of decomposition lol. Broken fishing rods alot of vintage lures and handcrafted and painted ones lol...the traps littered the ground as far as you could see down River
Interesting, I don’t get to go and do this as often as I would like. I would definitely love to check them more often, but as you say restrictions are in place. Lost and abandoned pots is certainly an issue. I did a volunteer day with fisheries and we removed over 200 pots in 3 hours. All just abandoned or ropes on trees. Will be interesting to see what the new regulations will be when opera house style pots are banned.
You can be my fish guide any time

Another great video Peter. Ditto to the others who have commented. Your videos have really helped me get back into bass fishing. Thanks for sharing your knowledge 🙏
Thanks Nick. It has been so much fun putting them all together. May many more videos be in my future.🎣😃👍
Great video mate
Thanks. Thank you for all the shares 👍👍
Thank you Peter. Your videos have really made a difference to my bass fishing over the last two years! Cheers Michael
Thanks Michael. That has always been the hope with the videos. That people take a few tips from them and then translate that into their own fishing. I am still learning myself, which keeps it fun too.
Awesome 3 part series really enjoyed it keep them coming
Thanks, I will do my best 👍🎣
Another great video Peter some different types of lure to try
You know me, I love tinkering and trying new things.
Those pots are great for catching shrimp for bait. It would be a shame to lose them
Let’s hope common sense prevails 👍
those shrimp are bloody huge! i think i'd find it hard to resist putting those out as bait for the bass 😉 that toga would've been a hellova catch...
We tried a couple and just caught barred grunter and tilapia. Will do it properly one day. I think you would need a lot of shrimp and some patience to get past the pest fish, but would be FUN. Toga and his mate were not interested in anything I threw at them.
those are some healthy bass yo at somerset 😉 shame about the jet skis but you certainly found a cracking area. can you kayak on somerset or is it defo only worth it in a boat?
Jet skis ended up being a blessing in disguise. I don’t think we would have gone up stream otherwise. Plenty of guys kayak, just so big an area to cover. Gets tricky in the boat with the wind, kayak would be even more of a challenge I think.
that hit at around the 8 minute mark was great! and i swear you almost said 'right at the kayak' 😉 defo the best kind of bite, cracking fish too. congrats on hitting the 50 tagged golden perch too, excellent work 👍
Yep was definitely saying kayak 😂. Have had that happen so often in the yak, that saying that has become a habit. Bit more control when it happens in the boat 😉
I have 2 Redclaw mounted that I caught in the Callide Dam in 2000 that are 32cm and 34cm without the claws, like small ocean lobster. They definitely grow bigger than most people realize, good catch mate.
That is amazing. They fascinate me as to how big they can grow and frustrate me, as they can be very difficult to catch at time. Something different that is just good fun.
@PTPFishing My favourite bait for attracting large Redclaw, Murray crayfish and even mudcrabs is tripple smoked bacon bones. I cut them into little pieces with a hacksaw to fit them into the bait holder on the Redclaw traps. Cheers.
I will give that a try. I have tried so many different baits. The dry cat or dog food has been the most consistent.
I've caught them the length of a 50l Esky lid. Tail end on one end and the claws hanging over the other end. I could only squeeze 3 together side by side across the width of the Esky lid and the two on the edges had their legs hanging over the edge of the lid..that was Fairburn dam out at emerald (well known for monster red claw)..i got the photos on my phone
Nice size ones Peter
They get pretty big. Made for a great feed.
@PTPFishing I reckon they would mate
Superb
Awesome to see you guys had a great few days of fishing. What model is the Bone Draggo you were using Peter?
Thanks it was a ton of fun. It is the Bone Drago 610M. The latest version is a cracka.
Great session on the obsession spinerbaits
Was lots of fun. A bit of a laugh as well.
Definitely like those lures Peter what size inline hook do you use for those size lures
It was a size 6, but I think I will play with one size bigger. I felt I missed a lot of bites.
@PTPFishing ok mate
great to see some new lures peter, and good to know the enoggera bass like them! the tail spinners defo look worth a go 👍
They have certainly made a positive 1st impression. 😉👍
hey mate just going back an having flick through you vids, you mention tagging fish. is this something a general member of the public keen to help provide data can become registered to do?
Definitely. There is a small membership cost. All the details are at www.suntag.org.au Check it out.
hey peter u shaggatron, nice catch big fella
👍thanks mate
Nice one Peter, got a 55cm yella in the same spot you got that big one back in winter
That is a great fish. There are some good yellas in that top end of the system. Well done.

Been catching plenty of bass throughout the spillway creek, haven’t been able to get a proper measure but I’m sure some have been hitting the 30cm mark
That’s awesome. I have seen a few down near the golf course. The creek looks pretty sick in the upper reaches, but that middle zone seems to have a better water flow. Good to see the creek holding a few fish.
Nice one Peter, some good fish there, luv' all that timber you're fishing too. I keep saying it but I must get up there! :) :)

I did enjoy it Peter. Great fun watching you bring those fish back to the boat. I can only imagine the fun you had. Thanks for the tips.

Only some know the history behind that Amart Darwin boat sticker Pete. Glad I found your channel mate, great to see you still loving it as much as you did back in the Virginia days. Dan Murphy
That sticker puts a smile on my face every time I look at. I hope I never loose that passion. 👍🎣👍🎣 Dan
now that looked like a lot of fun! can't believe you managed to get that bass out of that snag 😉 do you have a channel link for the fella you were fishing with?
Hi Jake, this was filmed a couple of years ago and the gentleman I was fishing with had issues with my videos. I hadn't released the video until now, to ensure no further animosity occurs.
where do you get those smaller diameter pool noodles for rod floaties?
They are actually rod floats. Freak Sports and a few others stock them.
@@PTPFishing Thanks
Good session there Peter, think the rain has stirred them up! Well done mate!
Joe it is hard to find consistent areas that the fish are holding. Lots of of one off bites. I always enjoy the paddle though.
it's great that enoggera is looking so healthy again and the fish are back on it! you got some cracking action there too, that last bass was a stunner - i need to make time to get up there again 👍 that v-blade is the one - go the gold!
Good old Gold. Consistent fish catcher. The fish are certainly healthy, just need them to be a little easier to locate.
So awesome that big models like that last one are at Enogerra. Inspired me to give it another crack tomorrow
Yes there are some better models in there. They certainly wake you up when they hit after catching much smaller fish. Good luck and let me know how you go.
@PTPFishing not the hottest session this afternoon. Just 3 smaller models spreadout over a few hours. Found a few huge lungfish cruising in the lilypads though which was a fun bonus
@@jackanderson3284a few is better than none. If the lungfish are on the move, the bass should get more active. At least that what I have experienced in the past.

Great video mate I have 3 curados and there excellent reels
I used to sell heaps of them when I was in retail. Great value. I hadn’t used one for years. Very impressed. Both reels were very good, the SLX would be a great option and excellent value for money at under $200.
@@PTPFishing yes mate curado are getting pricey now even with my son Paul being a manager in a big retail tackle store I might just try slx mate
@@michalesinclair5274 yes they are at a different level these days. It was nice to have a play with one.
Love the content. What size jig head were you using with the grunter?
Because of the run in the tide we were using 3/8oz and 1/4oz.
Because of the run in the tide we were using 3/8oz and 1/4oz jigheads.
bonus question: what weight braid and leader were you using on the bait casters? i've a suspicion i've been fishing too heavy and have been looking at lightening up for the coming season
Most use 10lb or maybe 15lb. I find with the quality braids these days that they can be a very fine diameter. So I run 20lb and adjust my leader to the waterway. 15lb at Kurwongbah because of the weed and 10lb most other places.
@@PTPFishing thanks peter 👍i just checked what i'm using (i always take a pic of the packs before spooling up) and i'm currently running 20lb braid which is crazy thin at 0.21mm and 16lb fluro leader. the braid can be a bit wiry initially but it's really supple by the end of one session. as a combo it's worked well so far but it's always interesting to experiment with these things, especially if it increases casting distance/accuracy.
@@jakewilliamson I am different with my spin tackle. 6lb or 8lb braid and 10-15lb leader.
its great that kurwongbah is fishing better 👍 the conditions have really changed over the last month, i've had some cracking sessions of late. good to see a bait caster comparison, i'm going to have to give one a go someday - my challenge is finding one with the handle on the 'right' side 😉
Jake most bait cast reels now have a left hand wind version. Left hand wind much easier to get these days.
@@PTPFishing yup, in europe it's the other way around, harder and more expensive to find a right hand wind 👍
@@jakewilliamsonthat was the case here too. But that has changed over the last 2-3 years

Joseph we have found them all over the place and caught them in many places. Can’t say I have ever targeted them specifically, but any drop offs, rock bars or where structure is under the water. Most of the ones I have caught have been where we are trying to catch bream and flathead. Sorry most probably isn’t very helpful.
