Wrapping an IBC tote rain barrel.

How I followed LDSPrepper's instructions to wrap my IBC tote with black plastic to prevent algae buildup. His instructions are much more detailed and can be found here: ua-cam.com/video/3YJPhkd7Jvk/v-deo.html In retrospect, I would use 5 mil plastic or thicker, not 4 mil. The 4 mil tore a bit when I inserted the tote back into its cage, and even had a few tiny holes in it from just sliding it o...

    If that snap caused that much damage maybe you should consider going up one waist size. If those snaps are under that much pressure maybe two snaps till you get the new size . No shame it happens to us all.

    Helpful vid. I removed the old ones by squeezing from sides with vice grips. A few times progressively tighter around the sides, and pop, out they came!

      That helps prevent algae from forming in the water. The tote is translucent and the light will grow lots of algae, causing the drain and hose fittings to plug up.

    I could be all wrong, but just wondering about everyone wrapping their tanks in Black plastic. If the water is for gardens, wouldn't a Silver colored tarp wrap keep the water from getting too hot, and stop algae as well? It would reflect the sun's rays instead of absorbing them seems to me.

    Why do 511 use such cheap snaps? Less than a month the snap doesn't hold properly

    • @seattledanr5363
      @seattledanr5363 5 років тому

      Good question. You'd think they'd spend 30 cents for better snaps. I gave these pants a 2-star review solely because of the low quality snap. These would be trash in 1 month for most people.

    I recently had a snap pop out of my Varsity jacket, but it had a decorative button on the top. It was a plastic decorative button. Do you think I can still use it if I replace it? Also, The entire snap popped out of the jacket, so if I were to replace it, I wouldn't have to drill it. Still having the original snap, do you think I should get the whole kit anyways? Or find something different to use? Or should I replace the whole snap? Your feedback will be much appreciated!

      Two of my 5.11 pants have the same problem. Now I know how to repair them. Gorilla glue is a polyurethane water activated glue, so it’s better if you dampen the cloth in the area where the repair is, that will make it stick better.

    Good video Dan, thanks for sharing. Think it'll work without the special tools?

    • @seattledanr5363
      @seattledanr5363 7 років тому

      BackwoodsBushcraft I bet if you are creative, you can do this without the anvil and expander. The anvil can be any firm surface like a wood or nylon block (concrete will scar the exposed surface of the snap), the expander could probably be replaced with a center punch or something similar--fat enough to expand the rivet, but pointed enough to stay centered.
