Sometimes I tear up just realizing I've mostly been employed most of my adulthood. It's a low bar for an adult life - there's so much more we want and need.

😢 our grandson is non speaking and regarded as severely autistic…..he presently is being taught to use a letterboard at home ….the special needs school he attends will not allow the use of this method in his school saying it is not authentic or scientifically proven…..the young man telling his mother that he waited for her to find out he could understand and communicate reduced me to tears.

It should be illegal to take away communication devices… I’m so very sorry for your situation. I’d recommend finding someone (a therapist or a lawyer/advocate) to help with this situation so that he has access to it at all times.

@@mimikyu__- There's a reason why this communication method (RPM/Spelling) isn't practiced at schools. Look into Facilitated Communication and the disastrous history surrounding it. RPM/Spelling is a modern offshoot of this, despite what proponents of it try to say. To avoid making the same mistake they made when integrating something that had no scientific efficacy behind it, they've chosen to wait until there's evidence to prove this method isn't just the same thing as Facilitated Communication before using it. Schools use other communication methods like an AAC device to help nonspeaking kids communicate their wants and needs.

@@GabbyGoLucky what disastrous history?? … l have yet to see it! What about verifiable evidence of children communicating using the letterboard….search on UA-cam- there is plenty of it!! As for scientific efficacy….. are you saying that scientists have never made a mistake…..don’t make me laugh!!

Parents do everything and anything for your kids with special needs. Figure out what they need and work on it at a early age. My son first word was mommy at 15 months. Then he didn't say anything else but vroom at 2. Then i bought him the Pecs book and put him in classes

perhaps head phones or sunglasses would help? Or maybe she doesn’t really need to go to the parade?

Or also having stim toys to redirect self injurious stims also helps because I have something to redirect my energy to. (Like instead of banging my head on things I use a fidget cube or squeeze slime.)

I have many of these challenges myself. I never knew why until I was only formally diagnosed at age 49 with ASD (Level 1). Communication is one of my worst issues. NT folks, if you haven’t heard, hints are evil. Stop hinting at things and please just tell us outright what you mean. Please. For real. Stop hinting. 🫤

I love when he said “As you grow up you learn how to better express and vent your emotions, and if you keep them in you’re going to break down. Neurotypicals go through that too. It’s just that I can go through it more easily.” I like this quote and feel like it well represents my experiences with having Autism.

I really appreciate your passion and dedication and advocacy. The housing crisis is a mental health issue. Better mental health and quality of life and community is through long term stable tailored efficient and effective housing. And we have to understand we live in a world based upon the “evils” of a man made scarcity and realize there is this unfortunate “responsible logical adult” neurotypical idea (how are neurotypical people even normal? So weird) that we cannot enrich all of gods children and have them thrive. so thousands of people starve and die each day. Gods children! The economic system and its effect and impacts on mental health, health care and housing are a hidden pandemic. it doesn’t matter if the intent of these man made economically deprived government created systems were to boost up society to a thriving and loving environment. Maybe that was helpful during the industrial revolution. But we like to put bandaids on things. today we know we have the real resources, technology and science to educate and provide a fulfilling and successful life for all of gods children to thrive and excel to become a citizen that contributes to society through diverse but greatly needed art, science, music, technology, writing, archeology, psychology psychiatry and the like. Actual jobs that enrich and have a positive lasting impact on the community and advancement in understanding diversity, humanity and the beautiful world! Now we have to really define what a good quality of life is and what we consider to be contributing to society. We have to rethink are practices and perceptions and realize these deeply rooted misconceptions of “work ethic” and a “work and “quality of life” We are only as strong as our “weakest” or most marginalized, stigmatized and shunned abandon. Children of god dying everyday because of these man made systems. We have to think of the elderly as well and that soon we will have tons of humans unable to retire nor have a fulfilling enriched peaceful end of life that all humans deserve. A lot of the homeless are comorbid neurodiverse or disabled in someway intellectually and/or physically or suffer from substance abuse caused by trauma. The autistic experience and the way we view this world itself is traumatic! There are huge overlaps between asd/adhd/trauma and how they can be confused for one another and your diagnosis is based, not on you but the psychiatrist! That’s extremely problematic and we have to address this. Being a queer/ lgbtq assigned male at birth I identify more with assigned female at birth autistics who typically go through life undiagnosed and feeling alien. I heavily relied on masking to adapt and disliked my stemming. Now I embrace my stemming and learning to love myself. It’s a long road. 🌈🐝💜

This could be my oldest son in fifteen years. Always creating things. For those who are not aware, autistic Temple Grandin changed the whole animal husbandry field. She had horrible social skills but presented to potential employees amazing solutions to their problems right at the start of her interviews. The movie about her features these experiences. Learn from her.
