Ha! Despite. The captions on couple of shots All the photos are of 2024. 🙄😊
Not a bad looking year Pete....keep the walks/Camps coming next year....cheers mate
Nice video 🙂👍
I could have pitched but there was no good sunset or sunrise. The view from there is exceptional on a clear day. Definitely going back. Thanks for watching. Atb
Nice remote area...shame it was a bit too windy, maybe another time.
Yeah Steven, I had the kit but there was no sunset or sunrise likely. Much higher winds than forecast. As I say I’d love to pitch on Greyrigg pike, awesome pitch that. Wish I’d taken my hooped bivi that would have pitched in the wind easily. In 5 mins. Still great to be outdoors. I watch all your stuff as you know. Atb
Where
Cumbria (mentioned in the title)is a county in the North of England. The fort is just south of Tebay, a small town. It’s about two hours drive north from Manchester.
Here’s the latitude and longitude East: 360957 North: 501261
Thank you for posting. Enjoyed this video. I am a pensioner and did my last Munro in 1996 and have walked extensively in the Pennines, Lakes and Ireland. However, I have never been to the Howgills. The range seems to be unique, not quite the Pennines, neither quite like the Lakes,. They are the ham sandwiched between them.
The Howgills are fantastic and mostly uncrowded. Generally there are benign but do have some ‘teeth’ in places. Such as Black force and Cautley crags. My mum was born in Sedbergh and my dad grew up in Appleby, a bit further north. The Howgills are Silurian sedimentary rocks and most of the Lakes is igneous/volcanic hence the very different characteristics. Thanks for watching. Plenty of other videos for you to enjoy in and around the area. I do love the Westmorland dales and north Pennines especially. Atb
stunning waterfall great views 👍new friend here
Cheers mate. Yeah different to get in there in flood but the falls are best in those conditions. One chap told me he fell into that lower pool when descending. It was more than six foot deep! Thanks for the sub. Atb
What a treat. Used to holiday at a farm at Little Asby back in the 1980s. Recall sitting on the limestone pavement with my, then young, son and his dog. No one else for miles.
That’s nice. It’s a lovely area. My dad grew up in Appleby and my mum was born in Sedbergh. Thanks for watching. Take a look at my other videos. Many are in the Howgills and Dales. Atb
Beautiful views. Breeze sounds chilly
Enjoyed it. About 15 miles north of Sedbergh. Appleby was where my dad went to school. A storm came in the day after. Atb
Nice 🙂👍
Thank you! Cheers!
@unclepeteswildadventures 🙂👍
Great that UP. The map of the route was very handy. Might have to have a camp up there next year. 👍
Spoiled for choice re pitches. As I mentioned there are two SSI areas to be aware of. But, great views, geology, flora and fauna. Good parking and Appleby bakery and Howgill’s deli on main street Appleby. Atb mate.
Hi Pete. Great video, that was really interesting and the views were incredible. 🙂
Cheers mate.
Cool...the Howgills are looking beautifully sleek.what a great landscape....thanks for showing us the old settlement, never knew it was there....cheers Pete.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video and channel. Subbed 👍🙂
Very nice video!
It’s a beautiful area. Had it all to myself! Thanks for watching and commenting. Atb
@unclepeteswildadventures Looks so. Subbed to your channel. Cheers from Norway 🙂👍
Some of the best walking in England and best of all, there is nobody there! Cheers.
Love it up there. My ambition is to finally get in to Black Force and not come out on a stretcher 🤣Thanks for watching. Atb
Great video Pete. It’s a spectacular place isn’t it.
Certainly is mate. I hand realised the was such a prominent Syncline in the gorge. There’s another huge fold in the spout above Black Force. My plan is to get up there and not exit on a stretcher 🤣
Sure is a grunt up there mate..remember it well...some grand/steep fells around those parts.
Looks terrible from a distance but it’s a really good solid path. Wouldn’t like to do it with heavy pack Steven. Thanks for watching 👍
I can't believe you hadn't walked up the path before. Cracking video as per usual. You picked a good day.
I know. Been to the top and the bottom but never up it😵Atb
Hi Pete, it's fabulous up there- I haven't been to Cautley Spout but it's on my list! Great video as always 😄
Cheers mate. It’s a great way up. It’s a really well built path. You wouldn’t think I used to rock climb judging by my fussing 😂. There’s quite a few dales 30s up there. Atb
@@unclepeteswildadventures Yeah, I know- they're the ones on my list!☺
Stunning ❤
Often head up there when the weather’s bad. If there’s been heavy rain, the falls are excellent. Good car park with a cafe too. Thanks for watching.
👍🏻👍🏻
This was a slog, Pete! Gorgeous weather though. It's great to see someone showing off the Howgills ❤
One day I’ll get into Black force. I find traversing with a big drop too scary. As you know in the Howgills there are some very steep convex slopes. You can see by the soil creep in this vid. There is a way in to the left of The Spout which is very steep and you have to avoid coming over the precipice at The Spout. Chris JB made it down. (Highly recommend his channel.) A red flag though is when people don’t manage to film it well, there’s usually a reason. It is very sketchy. Check out my Uldale force vid. Lovely to have you back.
Amazing views
THANKS
I was there the day before (opposite side) and it was frightening to see how many 'adults' took their small kids so close to the water!
Yeah it’s easy to slip on wet limestone and there’s not chance of a rescue in those powerful waters. Speaking of which take a look at my storm Debbie video at Srainforth force. A white water rescue chap called it death on a stick! Thanks for watching and commenting. Atb
I live in Lancashire and have never heard of that.😮
If you go on a windy but fine day the sounds are amazing. Thanks for watching. Atb
I have the Alpkit Kloke and use it inside my tent Munro bagging with my Aegis Max lightweight down bag I like the Kloke it means I can use the Aegis Max throughout the year. I am planning Bike touring Spain and Portugal so away from the coast campsites few and far between. A hooped bivvy is what I need and this looks perfect for meandering about Spain and Portugal not having to worry about finding a place to set up a tent.
After a few consecutive bivi camps I did a tent camp and felt claustrophobic in the tent. I love the fact that you can look out at the stars without getting out of your sleeping bag. You can find cheap Elans on eBay. Some people feel claustrophobic but I feel Nicky cosy. The zips snag on the weatherproof flange but it’s easy to sort with technique as I explain on my Wild boar elan video. Thanks for watching
Ps the side zipper makes entry and exit much easier.
I'm a big fan of the SRT. I love the noise it makes as the wind travels though the pipes. I also like the views to Stoodley Pike, Lad Law and Pendle. In fact, I've not been over for a year or two. I might nip over again soon. ATB, Chris
Very interesting 😄
It makes some beautiful noises. It would have been better with a parabolic mic or at least a furry thing over an external mic. An interesting installation though. Atb
@@unclepeteswildadventures It looks amazing, I'd love to hear it ☺
You didn't actually show how you got into the canyon where Uldale Force is? Did you drop down to the little waterfall in front of the main fall and somehow negotiate up the side of it? I did it many years ago (May 2008) and there wasn't much water in the river. I parked at Rawthey Bridge, and headed south on the path marked on the O.S. Maps then turned east across Bluecaster, and followed the path across the moor parallel with the right hand side of the river all the way to the little bridge, then continued up the river next to it on the same side. It did leave the river at one point and climbed up high above it then dropped down to the foot of the little fall below the main Uldale Force. Can't quite remember how I got above that little fall as it looks impossible with the steep sides but I did, i had all my walking gear on, rucksack, camera and tripod i think. I got a few pics of the main fall but it was into the light and there wasn't much water in. Coming back, I returned the same way but on the opposite side, i had to negotiate my way down below the smaller fall.....before i knew it i was in the water up to my neck! That water below the little fall was at least 6 foot deep. I didn't panic but swam to the side and pulled myself out. I walked down river, found a flat patch of grass, took my boots off and poured all the water out. Took my trousers off and reached into my rucksack for my waterproof leggings, they were the only thing i had on me that was dry. My camera and mobile phone were kaput and i still had to walk back to the car. It was windy and by the time i got back to the car i was dry. When i got home, everything went in the airing cupboard to dry but the camera and phone were destroyed. Still managed to pull the SD card from the camera and see all my pictures though! I have unfinished business there, but it gives me nightmares thinking about it! There was an episode of countryfile many years ago where Matt Baker was swimming in the pool below the main fall but it never showed you how he got there!
Yes mate it was deliberate that I didn’t show how I got in. I used some climbing equipment but I didn’t want to encourage inexperienced people to do the same. Also it’s a remote place and it would be nice to keep it that way. If you’re desperate enough you’ll find a way. Your story illustrates my reasoning.
I really do appreciate your taking the time to tell me your story. It makes me feel better that I took 4 attempts to get in there.
Yes the little waterfall in spate!
Great views but some steep hills- I wonder how many sheep die up there😟
The hills are deceptive. They start with a gentle slope which increases and then plunges suddenly into the ravine. I’m sure only a few sheep are lost I think when their coats are full, they are more top heavy. I don’t get water from below those ravines or if I do I boil it. I’m determined to get into Black Force one day. Not for the faint of heart though. It’s great place to park where I mentioned. Atb. Looking forward to you next.
Steep...hard work but oh so worth it Pete
Brilliant day out mate. Love those hills. Atb
Looks like you had a good day Pete, but those paths certainly looked steep! Cracking views over the M6 to the Lakes. Great stuff. Cheers. Eddie.
Cheers Eddie. Yeah there’s big drops below those narrow paths. Atb mate as you know I watch all your stuff.
@@unclepeteswildadventures Thanks Pete
I enjoyed that Pete. Looked like a glorious day. I love those grassy Howgills. They looked beautiful in that autumn sunshine. All the best mate 🙏
Cheers mate. One day I’ll go with someone who’s got a better head for heights than me. Chris JB did a belting video of Black Force. He’s got more bottle than me🤣
Cheers Steve. Just watched your latest. Yes brilliant up there. Tough nut to crack getting into Black Force. That was a recce, but I’ll crack it one day. Chris JB did a brilliant video of it. Atb mate keep em coming.
👍👍👍 .. nice 😊. Wind .. Alcohol-based fuel flame is very sensitive to air movement and I agree with you, the burner needs to be shielded from wind .. they all do. The plastic-covered handle. Yes, keep it away from the flame .. Trangia advises one to do so. The Gel Fuel available here in Switzerland ('Sicherheitsbrennpaste' .. can be sourced at any mini / supermarket) does burn very clean and leaves almost no residue on the pot bottom. Tip. I would include a piece of heat-resistant silicon / similar mat, cut to size, in the setup, to protect underlying 'heat-sensitive' surfaces. That way, it can be used almost anywhere, even indoors. I do .. the Swiss too. During Winter, indoor, tabletop Cheese Fondues using Alcohol Gel Burners are a Swiss 'National Sport' 😏. I have the Micro's bigger brother, the 'Mini'. I have added, inter alia, to the existing 800ml Trangia Bowl, a Quechua One Litre SS Pot and a 400ml Aluminium Bowl w folding handles from a 1970's 'Evernew Camping Bowl Set to the setup and a folding tripod fashioned from two pieces of an old bicycle spoke, to accommodate smaller diameter pots and cups. That way, I can up and downsize to suit the planned activity .. and everything stacks nicely into each other 😊. Used within their Design Intent, and taking note of their limitations, Alcohol-based Liquid and Gel Fuels are definitely an option and the Micro should give you many years of good service. Thanks for sharing .. take care ..
Yes good information. I was testing under all conditions. On one of my videos I tested with an alpkit Shield. It worked well with that. I mainly use the Speedster stove border Raider now. See video. Thanks for your info.
Hi im looking at getting this as i love the stealthyness of it but im worried of rats or rice crawling over me 😂 is there any detterants i can use to keep them away ?
I normally camp in the mountains in the uk. I have never seen any rats. The main thing anyway is not leaving any food sources. Seal any pots with food remnants in bags.
Amazing sunrise, the views up there are fantastic. I love it around there. Great video ☺
Amazing waterfall, I'll have to take a walk over that way one day 😄
It’s a tough nut to crack. I’d love to get up there in the ice and snow. Of course in a drought it would be easier (remember those🤣) but the waterfall as you can see is best in flood! Thanks for watching. Looking forward to your next. Atb
Need to get up there UP, maybe involving a camp. AW painted a lovely picture of the place in his Howgills book too. Your fungi was a dusky puffball and the flower was devil's-bit scabious. Very nice! 😎
Yeah mate. You were the ‘I know somebody that does know’🤘defo a bucket list spot. Tricky place to get into. Can’t wait for your next. Atb
It’s defo not for the faint hearted getting into that place in those conditions. If anything happened you’d be there for days. I’ve never seen another soul up there. I have satellite gps, so even up there I’m trackable and can send and receive messages. I’ve been trying for months to get in there. Atb mate
Wow...that's real impressive Pete...a tough route up to Baugh fell from there.
Sshhh, don’t tell too many people about one of our greatest hidden gems. What a stunning spot 🥾
Exactly. Thanks for watching. Don’t tell anyone!
Man you had some stunning views up there 👌❤️ Fantastic to see the northern lights
Certainly did. The views of the night sky were awesome too. Thanks for watching atb
Enjoyed that mate...all worth it for that sunrise....stunning.
Cheers bud.
