Classic Mercedes, repairs, restoring, modifying, EV swapping!
Restomodding my 1987 Mercedes 300E (W124) and others. One part at a time.
I'm doing it my way because it's my Mercedes.
Project: Restoration and EV (electric vehicle) swap on the W124. The future is a balance of keeping classics in original condition while exploring new ways to prolong their drivability. Mercedes Benz has always prided themselves on quiet refined driving and were building EV's in the 90's with electric 190E's. An EV swap for any classic Mercedes is logical and just doing what Mercedes has already done. Support the channel and help me explore both preserving a classic and, converting one to an electric vehicle. My name is Michael, this is my channel, my brand and my business.

The W124 Journey So Far - All the Projects
Here is everything we have done so far. It's all the projects to date on the Mercedes W124 300E from 1987. Check the chapter links at the bottom to find what you need. We've done walk arounds, fixed the parking lights and the illumination control module. We've repaired the overhead interior dome light and the neutral safety switch. We've looked at the coil. distributor and spark plugs in the M103 engine. We've investigated the 8-Hole wheels I have on the car to see where they came from. Look through and find what you're interested in. I want you to know that these classic Mercedes cars are easy to work on and very satisfying. They are solid and extremely well built. Using genuine or OEM parts will have your car lasting another 35 years.

Are these REAL Mercedes W124 wheels?
Переглядів 3,6 тис.Рік тому
Not all wheels that look like Mercedes wheels were made by Mercedes or are approved OEM versions. You need to look for a Mercedes Star and part number to be either of those things. My wheels are E25 Offset so sit quite wide, but where did they come from? A W124 500E or AMG? Maybe a W126 or W140? Lets have a look. #mercedes #300e #w124 #eclass #w126 #w140 #500e #amg #wheels #remotec #oem #w124mo...

Great video! I will try this because my rear passenger running light is not working. Bulbs are fine
Are Mercedes have electrical problem we don't know what the issue is it's not the battery not the alternator so can you give me some tips like what the problem might be for electrical?
Thank you! Great explanation
Real
Thank you sommich for showing how the switch works. I installed shift vushibgs yeaterday and removed the lever to press new bushing into levwe (only way) but didnt realize lever needs to line up with nss. Car wont start. Will align. (Other way purple wire jumper )
190e Mercedes 1987: replaced spark plugs then took it for smog test. Passed smog test. 2 weeks later started shaking when on a stop. Runs smooth. Starts good. What to do?
Replace the ignition coil from the first part of the video, sounds like a bad misfire. Before spending money on new parts I'd take off the distributor cap and see what it looks like in there. May need to scrape contacts and clean it up. If it's not too bad/cleaning it doesn't help replace the ignition coil. Other thing to check would be if your Valve Cover Gasket is leaking AND the gasket around your sparkplugs is leaking too. Getting oil onto those shiny new spark plugs would cause some decent misfires. Still looking for the part number fopr those spark plug seals myself..... If none of those things are the issue I'd check what your battery is reading with the AC on full blast and the headlights on. I THINK its supposed to be around 14.5V (find another source on that).....if its fluctuating or constantly reading below that then that points to the voltage regulator or the entire alternator being bad. Voltage regulator is like 40$ and is right on the front of your alternator and is easy to replace (or so I have heard).
when removing the unit early on, you mentioned that you push the unit to the "right" ? should it be left since the right has the metal clips?
Would it start in D or R without the Neutral Safety Switch??
Thanks
Thank you for the video, i copied your job and turned to be great.
Did it solve the issue?
Absolutely yes. It started immediately and smoothly after replacing the plugs, rotor, backing plate, distributor and coil. I did it all in one go so I can't say 'exactly' if one things was an issue over another but I suspect it was the coil given the sudden failure and the coil was under stress from trying to overcome the higher resistance in bad gapped plugs and old distributor.
@@generalvoltage1821 Thank you, lately been having issues with start and running, it runs for a while then shuts off, so will give it a go.
Thanks for this video. Repaired mine with the same way. Holds a lamp bar like a new)
No space for stands jack the diff
Very good ! I have a question, there are some metal pieces, if broken, how can i repair..?
If im not wrong, these are JRD aftermarket replacements for the real 15 inch Mercedes wheels... I do hava a set.. the part no.A210
Sacrilege. Sorry brother wood just goes to hard
Thank you for this! Very helpful
is this the same as the Transmission Range Sensor, I'm getting a P0705 trouble code? thanks in advance
I've not heard of a Transmission Range Sensor. This switch is always referred to as the Neutral Safety Switch. This doesn't know anything about what gear the car is in apart from park, reverse or neutral. It isolates the engine from starting if accidently in any gear or reverse on a automatic and manual (I think) transmission. it also controls the reverse (backup ) lights. If the car is in Park or Neutral it will let the engine start.
I googled it and apparently the names are uses interchangably. It the same thing outside the transmission... I get the P0705 code but starting is no problem, but I get stuck intermittently at N or D and I have to turn off the engine to shift to P. Plus, the CEL is on when this happens, and my display cluster PRND starts becoming blank or white.. I'm trying to diagnose is it's this TRS/NSS or what? I starting with checking my trans level I justs bought a dipstick on Amazon... What do you think? thanks again! btw I have a 2005 C240 with 150k on the odometer...@@generalvoltage1821
@@generalvoltage1821 thank you very much
Hello from the uk. Im wondering what the parking/drls are as im assuming that they weren’t a thing in the uk. I cant find any info on this and would like to have my indicators as drls (ideally without drilling a new hole for another bulb). TIA.
I am unsure of why any version of the w124 would not have daylight running lights/parking lights. The bulb for the parking light is in the same housing as the main headlight bulb. It sits below the main bulb. It's the first turn on the headlight selector. I changed my parking bulbs to LED's and they look amazing as drls. I have kept the original bulb for the main beams. This link shows the LED bulbs on and off as well as brining on the main beams and the fog lights. ua-cam.com/users/shortsq2PNiiA4Arc
@@generalvoltage1821 thanks. Maybe its a difference in terminology. In the uk i think theyre are just the sidelights. Those Leds look great.
Thank😊
Nice w124😊
I remove my wheels too and wash them 😂. I will try with this next time. I wash mine manually with soap and a piece of scouring pad
Is this on the left (driver) side of the transmission or the right (passenger) side?
When sitting in the car it's on the left side of the transmission. Applies to any left or right hand drive car.
Fale em português -please!

Thank you! I think this is what I need to replace on my W201.
I will be replacing mine this weekend on a 94. Excellent video with explanations. Thank you
Congratulations!!
I think I might choose rust & be able to get parts that literally cost 100% less than what they do in Australia vs having no rust & paying the unfathomable amount you guys have to pay for seemingly everything. Please tell me I'm wrong, but every time I see an Australian mention what they're paying for parts......I seriously would consider not owning a car if I lived there.
Muy interesante el video, gracias por compartir. Lamento que sólo se puede dejar un like, porque con la información de las lámparas led ya te ganaste todos los likes. Nuevamente, muchas gracias
Thanks
Thanky
My rims look close but the holes in mine are more oval. But look very close

Thanks! Learning with your videos. I'm also restoring a 300e w124.
Thanks for recording the video - the link you mentioned and point #4 within that link is very interesting and good to know knowledge in general when it comes to these 80s/90s Mercedes. We encountered the same regarding that particular bulb on a W124, so anyone owning a W124 or a 201 or 126 we encourage you to read that #4 under the link from the description - can save you some time, annoyance and perhaps even money.
Lot's of good info and well done.
I own a w124 a couple times, and wow, cant ever get enough of this beauty!
The numbers you’re looking at are date stamps. ‘87 car, April ‘92 wheels. Originally your car would have had the 6.5J x 16H2 SA 640 option 15 hole rims. Your car, like my 300CE coupe is a ‘Series 1’ car. My car has the 8 hole rim in the same 6.5J x 16H2 SA652 option which were fitted on the 124 range from late 1990 for the 1991 season. The wheels you have may correspond to the ‘Sportline’ package given they’re 7J size. Greetings from Bass Coast, Victoria.
nicely done - thanks
Thanks mate.
Only Merc this woul fit is inded w126 and also r107sl. W124 like yours should be 6,5 inch wide and offset 38 or 39 mm. Look on int ernet for reifengrossen w124 for more options like sportline 7 inch wide. Your 205/65 is also for w126 or r107 and 65 is not homologated on 7 inch, sg Hould then be 205/60
Let me show u mine from USA you will puke
E25 offset
Correct but it turns out they are not original Mercedes wheels. They are made by Remotec in Germany who apparently made a lot of wheels for Mercedes cars and BMW's etc to the same spec. They just don't have the Mercedes part numbers on them and are technically an after market item.
They are 8 holes

It's mostly because they are built very well and we don't use road salt in winter here in Australia.
Да как так то? Просто идеальное состояние, у нас уже через год два уже жуки лезут на новой машине😢
Australia doesn't use road salt. We don't get snow during winter except in a few very small areas around some mountains. Австралия не использует дорожную соль. Зимой у нас не бывает снега, за исключением нескольких очень маленьких участков вокруг некоторых гор.
