Suryacitta - Mindfulness Unleashed
United Kingdom
Приєднався 22 лют 2011
I am a five time author and ordained Buddhist. I live with my wife Gaynor in rural Leicestershire with our beloved blind Border Collie Bankei. Bankei lost his sight very quickly in 2021 when he was three years old. Observing Bankei was remarkable, he remained joyful even as it was happening snd remains so to this day. i noticed there were not any stories about his blindness which he was telling himself, so there was not any mental suffering.
As a consequence of observing him I set up Walking Into Wisdom - Reflections of A Dog Walker. These are bite-size video teachings whilst walking Bankei. I hope you enjoy the bite-size offerings.

So in tune with what I am thinking at the moment. All that needs to happen now is to move from intellect to heart!!

Where I keep getting confused / stuck is when it comes to unhealthy behaviours like over drinking or over eating or over exercising, surely we need to tinker with our thinking or triggers in order to change those behaviours if they are unhealthy ?
This is exactly the point Louise. Do you expect to be perfect? ie, drink just the right amount, speak just the right words, be just kind enough, have just the right attitude to people, eat just the right foods and the right amount. On the personality level this is what happens. It is the identification with the personality which is the problem. Sure, we can iron out a few of the creases in the personality, but the personality lives in duality and is not ultimately who you are. The personality, the games, the thoughts, the ideas, beliefs come and go but you the witness, the ever-present awareness never changes. This is the primary mistake which we make, we believe we are the personality so we go about trying to perfect that - it never will work. I am not saying we would be better eating a little less or drinking a little less in some cases, but there will be always something we are not happy with if we take the personality to be who we are. We tend to judge ourselves for over drinking, overeating, being unkind and not having good boundaries which just makes us more miserable so we do it again to try to feel better. Instead, we could begin to really ask the question, who is it that is drinking? Or, what am I avoiding by overeating or being defensive? A question is much healthier than a judgment. We need to inquire rather than judge and criticise. Good to hear from you xx
Surya citta thank you for that reply, . “ a question is much healthier than a judgement “ that’s a powerful way to look at it. Never thought of it what way before. That actually makes the idea of compassionate awareness make more sense to me too. Many thanks. Ps loving the cookery shows Keep them up please x

Is this a question Rufusdos?
Have read the book, which is excellent. This video is so useful in demonstrating the key points in the book. Very useful, thanks
Michael Venet thanks Michael...
Which exercises or practices would you suggest for a ‘mindfulness taster session’?
G Driver I would introduce people to awareness of/feeling the breath and thought labelling for when they are lost in thinking. A form of mindfulness if breathing but a little more emphasis on noticing their moments when lost in thought. Keep it simple.
Surya citta thank you
Great insight and analogy. Thank you.
Thanks David...
Your books are profound, wise, so clear and well written. Reading them is a wonderful calming experience. Thank you.
Thank you David, for your kind words...
Wonderful wise words. Thank you.
Thank you.
beautiful!
A few weeks ago I found myself burden from a sadness of a different quality than usual ( I was looking after a family dog very ill and there was a lot going on in my family). It was a sadness that i could feel in my body and not just in my head and it was depressing me. I felt heavy. My mind was swinging between wanting to know why and wanting it to go away. I instead decided that I did not needed to think more to heal. I did a Body Scan every day during that time and I stayed with the sadness without trying to change anything. I embraced myself with Acceptance and Trust. After a few days of sitting meditation, it was gone. Thank you for this video Suryacitta and also for the Mindfulness Training
"over-thinking a strategy we use to avoid feeling"...Mindfulness is the sun that melts the ice (our defenses) to reveal the jewel. I appreciate the metaphor.
Thank you Etka, much appreciated, Suryacitta
