I recorded this off the air on a VCR when it first aired 30 years ago, then transferred it to a DVD about 15 years later, and have enjoyed it countless times over the decades. It was one of the most wonderful galas every produced. Thanks for posting it - my DVD is showing signs of wear and tear after so many years and your post is much more crisp. And thanks for your performance in the gala. Just wonderful!

The only Salome who could rival this is Ljuba Welitsch. Her recording of this final scene is amazing -- and can raise the hair on your head.

If you haven't listened to Nilsson sing this difficult aria, you probably never knew what the notes are supposed to be. Every other soprano I've ever heard attempt this, just seem to approximate and imprecisely take a stab at the correct pitches.

Absolutely extraordinary! And no trashy modern perversity in the production. Alas, today this opera is so abused by sexualised scenery, while the subject is rather sad, of an abused child. We can see how attitudes changed since the times of Wilde and Strauss, and certainly the Bible. What a performance! Bravissima! The tenor Herod and mezzo Herodiade are also excellent.
