The Human Rights Center-recipient of the MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions- conducts world-class research and investigations into some of the most pressing human rights crises of our times. Using scientific methods and innovative technologies, we support efforts to hold perpetrators accountable and protect vulnerable populations. We train students and advocates to document human rights violations and turn this information into effective action. We draw on the expertise at UC Berkeley to bring people together to strengthen the global movement for human rights.
60 Years Later: Legacies of the Free Speech Movement with Professor Dick Buxbaum & Adam Hochschild
Launched at UC Berkeley in 1964, The Free Speech Movement was pivotal in codifying the freedom of expression for university students.
Berkeley Law’s Professor Richard Buxbaum was part of the defense counsel in the criminal proceedings against the 773 members of the Free Speech Movement. He later represented several campus organizations in cases arising out of Vietnam War protests, and served as defense counsel in proceedings following the Third World Liberation strikes, which led to the development of affirmative action for student admissions.
Adam Hochschild, a noted author and UC Berkeley Journalism lecturer, spoke in conversation with Professor Buxbaum about the remarkable path that led him to his defense of the Free Speech Movement, and other catalytic student-powered activism.
Brian Nguyen, the first awardee of the Richard Buxbaum Global Justice Fellowship, introduced the conversation.
