i used to go to a french school here in louisiana a couple of years ago. we used to watch astérix and obélix every monday morning, and friday afternoon. to start and end the week. this was from pre-k to 5th grade. i missed that school. i only left because it became and bad school. it was great when i was a kid. i look back at that time. and i love those memories.

I have the english Epic Comics Blueberry albums. They’re good quality. Glossy thick paper and deep colors. I don’t understand US market well enough to know if those can be reprinted. Many Moebius’ works are being collected into fine and big hardcovers but for some reason Blueberry doesnt get the same treatment.

I've bought Upgrade Soul by Ezra Clayton Daniels the times. First I bought the three individual issues (and got them signed) at a con from Daniels himself. Then I found a used softcover and thought that that would be the one I would loan out (which makes no sense because I NEVER loan ANYTHING. Lastly I bought the hardcover special edition.

I grew up one these comics in the local library. Thorgal, Blueberry, Asterix, Lucky Luke, Tin Tin (or Kuifje) and of course the unavoidable Suske en Wiske. Storm and the Trigan Empire have amazing art. The quality is generally high, you really have to read and they have substance. They tell a story and are really about something. Got a top 10 of the best ones?

It's hard to get people into American comics outside of Marvel and DC it got to be a nightmare to get people into European ones

Loved Asterix comics as a British kid and they still hold up as an adult. They were available from libraries along with Tintin books. The punny names are genius even Asterix himself who is the star and this * is an asterisk. Cool eh?

I love the art style

As a French who grew up with some of Astérix’s animated features, it’s lovely to see people outside of France giving him some love. It’s also interesting as a bilingual to see how the translation staff had to change most characters name to keep the fact that they all have puns as name.

The regular French/Belgian hardcover comic in Germany cost 15 € per issue. Most of them have 48 pages. A regular Spiderman Comic from the German distributor costs 6 € (it contains two volumes of US Marvel comics). So you can see, US comics are a lot cheaper than French/Belgian Comics (a few albums are published as softcover, thoses costs 12 €).

I read comics for now around 50 years. I started with German children comics, moved over to Prince Vailant (because my mother was a great fan and had a few albums form the first German publication in the 60s). There was a time when I collected the German DC comics in the 70s and after reading the first German Marvel issue of Amazing Spiderman in the late 70s, I sold all my DC comics on a flee market and was addicted to Marvel. But ll the time I was reading the German published French/Belgian Comics. ANd nowadays I only read French/Belgian comics, with a few exceptions like Garth Ennis and Will Eisner. There is a German edition of The Spirit Archive which I love.

Usually I read the American and manga comics but now I'm willing to give the franco belgian comics a try

Really cool video - I completely agree, there are thousands of comics, manga, bds, webtoons, etc out there, so no need to slog through subpar content. I was wondering if you had any recommendations for medieval/ fantasy type BDs with great art? Does Europe have an equivalent of Berzerk (with cleaner lines than Elric)? If you haven’t read Thorgal it’s a must ;) Lanfeust also has pretty fun art, but veers more towards the ‘cartoony’

Thanks for a great video. This completely echo my thoughts. Now a days most of the auto biographical or semi -auto biographical graphic novels have really bad art and only logic I can hear about that they are great book but art is secondary or it suit the story telling. It eludes me why the figures have to be always sticky or sketchy.

I have the impression that Belgo-Franc comics are deeper than the flimsy DC comics, there is more Story (I'm Belgian btw).... no, European comics are NOT about super heroes, because, those ancient gods are stolen now by the muricans who publish comics featuring OUR ancients gods as super heroes (and probably even copyright them)...makes me wonder, if as a European I'm even allowed these days to worship my god Thor, without having to pay some fracking murican company for it.

Even for Americans, there are Belgian comics that are interesting, names : Buck Danny and Dan Cooper (first one is a US Navy aviator, second one is a Canadian pilot)

Just started going through your vids. Great stuff. Love to see European comics highlighted this way. I’m not a fan of digital in comics but I have bought quite many through Comixology. I was planning to switch to Izneo but it says on their on their page that they’re closing the English side completely. After some digging it seems they will close all languages except french. They also suggest all English language customers should quit the account by the end of January.

As a french canadian I know Izneo since a few years... but I knew nothing about Comixology. 😁I think the reason the second users don’t know a lot about the first group (Izneo) has to do with different definition or comics. Comixology was maybe more into comics and Izneo more into «bande dessinée» (same as comics but with maybe a wider range of styles and stories). I haven’t used the services of Izneo so far but I consider it should be a service as easy to use as renting a movie online. Nowadays I don’t collect «bande dessinée» so this online service could be useful for me. I buy a few albums here and there, when done with them I gave them to my local library.

I recommend you as a Belgian comic book author Roger Leloup with Yoko Tsuno. And André Franquin with Idées noires (black ideas?) and Gaston Lagaffe (Gomer Goof). Enki Bilal and Mœbius (Jean Giraud) are also two very important authors/cartoonists.

Very interesting, lettering is something you don't really think about but affects the reading experience so much. The lower case "i" is such a good idea, and I never cared much for Blake and Mortimer in part because I hated the font and it made reading the comic a bit unpleasant. I don't care for the script fonts either.
