Diamond Bankruptcy | First Thoughts [Pipeline Podcast #101]
I recorded this the night the bankruptcy was announced. More info has since come out and I'm sure I'll be back to talk more about those interesting details in the days ahead.
In the meantime, think of this almost as a new episode of the Pipeline Podcast, just without the RSS feed. In other words, not a podcast. Sigh.

    I miss American Flagg, in my opinion it was Chaykin's peak before he was sidetracked by lacy underwear in Black Kiss. Even Mike Vosburg taking over the art chores later on was bearable, that's how good the writing was. Who should we petition for a AF Omnibus ? Would be great to see Ken Bruzenak's lettering on good paper. I still confuse his work with John Workman sometimes.

    • @PipelineComics
      @PipelineComics 14 годин тому

      Image Comics did a hardcover collection of the first 12 issues or so of Flagg a few years back. Erik Larsen worked on the coloring files to get it right, as a matter of fact. There hasn’t been a second volume, sadly.

  • @jclebourdais10
    @jclebourdais10 18 годин тому

    Freak Force was my favourite spinoff of the Dragon Universe, the gender-swapped CM alternate Mighty Man was groundbreaking and done quite well. Too bad Larsen always lacked in proper story setup and favourited action over it. but establishing context makes your story breathe a bit and we'd get more invested in the characters instead of just spotting the Mavel/DC character swipes.

    These were the early stages of Claremont iffy treatment of women in his books after messing up Carol Danvers previously. He would do much worse later (Psylocke anyone), in a way he's the precursor of the fridging concept.

    Before Thor, I only knew Simonson from taking over Metal Men after Andru/Esposito I guess were not available for the revival. Too bad the printing quality of the Thor floppies made John Workman's lettering illegible and the WS art quite murky at times. When the run was finally collected in Luminaries TPB and properly recolored I had a chance to reread t and enjoyed it a lot more the second time around.

    • @PipelineComics
      @PipelineComics 5 годин тому

      Someday, I'll start looking for Comics International on eBay and making videos on those. =) I picked up a couple issues of AH as they were released in my earliest collecting days, but it folded before I got into the magazines completely. It died just as Image exploded, so I suppose Wizard is the logical successor. (No, I take that back. I wouldn't want to insult Amazing Heroes like that. What was I thinking?!?)

      @@PipelineComics Sure Wizard was covering the trendy books like Image and surfing on the whole 90s speculation vibe. I have a particular fondness for Comics International not just because they published some of my articles, but mostly because it was British and as such had a completely different tone and irreverence towards the US mainstream, sort of like today watching the BBC version of Have I Got News for You next the the sanitised CNN one. Comics-related press has all but disappeared now I find that very sad.

      The new American translation of Asterix has reverted to using "Panoramix" as the Druid's name now, just to avoid any potential drug references. ::sigh:: So the world just got a little smaller. Hey question, I know now that "artist edition" books are huge, 17 inches, are any other books that big? Like "gallery edition" "artisan edition" or "artifact edition"? Thanks!

    • @PipelineComics
      @PipelineComics 13 днів тому

      For the most part, the books are the same, but different publishers have different names. The Spawn and Savage Dragon "Vault Edition"s are an "Artists Edition" at Image Comics. The one exception is IDW"s "Artisan Edition", which is softcover and 8" x 12" in size in an attempt to make an affordable edition of the material. "Artifact Edition" is just an "Artists Edition" that doesn't have complete stories in it -- but IDW has stopped using that label for those books now and calls them "Artists Editions", too. (See aeindex.org/sundry/artifact-editions-are-dead/ ). "Gallery Edition" is the name Graphite Designs used when it did a "Dark Knight Returns" reprint at 13" x 20". And Dynamite did their "Red Sonja" reprint as "Art Edition," but it's the same idea. Come to think of it, I think I did an article about this I should update and reprint.... =)

      It took me a while to track it down but I finally did - Yes, there was an American Entertainment version of it with a different cover, but the one I'm thinking of was polybagged in with Gen13 #25. (It's crazy how difficult that was to find out via Google. I had to find an eBay auction for Gen13 that showed a picture of the polybag.)

      Every country gets its own translation with its own set of names. Thankfully, they tend to keep them internally consistent with the suffixes, as best they can. It’s all part of the charm! 😎

      My pleasure! It’s a wonderful series. Wish they continued publishing them in America, but will enjoy what we got!
