Making a funky beat with 90s Sample CDs // MPC Live ii
I wanted to work through a big stretch of writer's block I've had recently with one simple trick... not overthinking it. Oh, and I also went digging through some classic 90s sample CDs. Enjoy!

Stop making boring Syntakt patterns... (+ FREE sample pack)

Pull up your boots boys, because we are getting deep into the weeds of parameter locking, layered sounds, conditional trigs, and more necessary tricks to the Elektron workflow. Most of these tricks are applicable to all of the Elektron boxes (Syntakt, Digitone, Digitakt, etc.) as they use the same terminology and sequencer focused workflow. EDITS: I said five tips in the video, but I actually m...
Polyend Play MIDI sequencing is unreal// IDM jam with volca drum// jamuary 2024

My first song of 2024! The sequencer on the @Polyend Play is great, but you probably know that already. I used it to really get the most out of the @KorgOfficial Volca Drum, as the big limitation with the Volca Drum is a garbage interface to control so many features. The Volca is running into the @ChaseBlissAudio Generation Loss Mkii in classic mode. Some light mixing and mastering was done in ...

      I'm not using anything, the syntakt is taking the guitar input directly, but that guitar has active pickups so the signal is much closer to line level than a passive guitar pickup would be.

    Mastering the use of the LFOs on the digis/syntakt is one of the fundamental areas of creative potential which allow one to distinguish their sound from others, and IMHO elevate these machines to what I'd call "instruments"... Not all electronic gear gets this medal from me, no siree.

    Has anyone encountered huge amounts of noise only in overbridge? When using headphones or the audio out, the signal is super clean and there’s no audible noise, but when I use overbridge in ableton, every track has a ton of noise and the volumes of the tracks are so much lower than if I record the audio out through my interface, so adding gain just increases the noise with it. I reached out to elektron and saw some other people post about it but the solution elektron gave was to turn the overdrive all the way up on the fx channel, which does seem to reduce the noise weirdly but then it of course adds a ton of overdrive to everything that’s going through the fx track and that shouldn’t be the solution I’m looking for, because if that’s the only solution overbridge is kind of not an option for recording. Idk if anyone else has figured out a solution to this issue because my old syntakt recordings through overbridge never had this issue but recently I’ve been trying to bring tracks over from my syntakt to ableton and it’s been kind of a nightmare to use overbridge and I just had to use my interface and solo each track and record manually which is a hassle in its own way.

    • @keeganwills
      @keeganwills 8 місяців тому

      I haven't really used overbridge, so I haven't had that problem. That sounds really frustrating though.

    • @thawkil
      @thawkil 8 місяців тому

      that's a weird one. I've been multi-tracking in OB and haven't run into that. The volumes are a little on the low side but no noise issues on my end.

    I really hope they add a few more machines/synth engines to it, it has a fairly strong sonic palette but still pales in comparison to the monomachine’s sonic variety. It can definitely get a lot of the fm sounds, metallic sounds, and the drums sound great and I don’t think they need to expand the kicks or percussion anymore, but the chord engine feels super weak and there are only a few wave positions I find pleasant within the chord engine, longer pads tend to get grating even with a lot of automation and I tend to replace the chords in ableton with a vst whenever I finish the track up. If they added super rudimentary sample support I think that would be amazing but I don’t think they will, they seem to like keeping their boxes all divided in terms of features these days and I think they would (wrongly imo) think that a basic sample engine would eat into digitakt sales. Another polyphonic style engine would be a dream, maybe one that’s fm based or something a bit more out there like granular synthesis (though that would probably mean loading samples onto the device which it currently doesn’t support) The addition of portamento definitely was one of the biggest updates they’ve done for it thus far and lets me make quirky hyperpop style arpeggios.

    • @keeganwills
      @keeganwills 8 місяців тому

      I wish there were more machines as well, and I wouldn't count out the possibility. Elektron is really good at supporting their devices for years after release. Personally, I tend to use the syntakt primarily for drums because it clearly excels at that, and then I use other synths or instruments for other sounds later. Sample support would be cool, but I doubt that would happen.

    Play non + is our best kept secret when you just want to MIDI sequence. I have read the next update will allow for MIDI perf, so this is going to be a game changer imo. I've managed to get under the hood of my Nord 3P Drum and control panning to some seriously good effect. I think this is my most powerful and intuitive sequencer I have used yet, and I have had maybe around 20? Price wise vs feature, it's on of the cheapest too. I still have my Polyend SEQ and that was more than double what I paid for my PE Play.

    • @keeganwills
      @keeganwills 8 місяців тому

      No doubt, its an absolute beast! MIDI perf is the only thing I've been missing from the Play since launch, I would be so excited to have that added! I know a lot of people are upset with the whole play+ launch, but I just don't really care about play+ that much because I'm super happy with the OG play still

    • @dankeplace
      @dankeplace 8 місяців тому

      @@keeganwills yeah the + is actually detrimental when it comes to MIDI as the 3 synth engines use the external MIDI tracks, well share. Not interested in synth engines or samples, MIDI tracks is where it's at but the samples is a bonus. Audio over USB is a great feature for the + but again I am not interested in the Groove box aspects of the unit.

    • @keeganwills
      @keeganwills 8 місяців тому

      @@dankeplace totally agree. I would rather have more tracks to sequence full featured synths and other gear, rather than some condensed plug-ins with a not great ui on the play+

    • @dankeplace
      @dankeplace 8 місяців тому

      @@keeganwills if you're smart, you can have more than 8 MIDI tracks as each note or step can have its own MIDI channel. So in essence 16 steps can be 16 MIDI channels on 1 track. Then you have 7 other MIDI tracks lol. I know it's not ideal to do it this way but 1 track could have 2 MIDI channels if this makes sense? Just means you need to stagger notes. Cool thing is you don't interrupt MIDI channel 1 notes with MIDI channel 2 info. 64 steps can net you 2 32 step sequences at half time. I have sort of worked it all out in my head as I was playing around with the Nord 3P which can use up to 6 channels of MIDI, so you have to get creative and that's what I love abt PE Play, it's pretty flexible.

    • @keeganwills
      @keeganwills 8 місяців тому

      @@dankeplace that sounds like a wild setup man. It's definitely super flexible. I've used it a lot to sequence my MPC because the MPC basically has as many MIDI channels as you need, so that gives you a ton of options with the play as the controller
