Savannah, USA - Pearl of the Southern States with historic charm and an enchanting historic district
We take a city tour through Savannah, Georgia, USA. The waterfront on River Street and the Plant Riverside District on the Savannah River are perfect for a stroll. The Historic District with beautifully restored houses such as the Owens-Thomas House, is considered one of the most beautiful in the USA. In the many parks of Savannah such as Emmet Park, Chippewa Square or Forsyth Park, we see mighty Virginia oaks whose branches are picturesquely overgrown with Spanish moss.
Savannah was founded in 1733. The city on the banks of the Savannah River developed into an important port for shipping cotton from the surrounding plantations. The city remained undamaged during the American Civil War. But the decline of the plantation farming hit Savannah hard. The city fell into disrepair. But since the 1950s, the historic buildings have been carefully restored. Today, Savannah has a charming historic district with plenty of historic charm.
Our tour begins in front of City Hall, Savannah's town hall, built in 1905. Steep historic stairs take us down to River Street on the banks of the Savannah River. In the 1970s, the old, dilapidated port area was extensively renovated. Shops, restaurants, bars and art galleries moved into the former warehouses. A few meters upstream in the Plant Riverside District, a former power plant was converted into a modern complex with restaurants, bars, shops and a hotel. It is Easter, and many tourists and locals meet on the waterfront promenade. You can watch up close the huge ships that are heading for the modern container port a few kilometers upstream. We stroll along the waterfront. An eye-catcher is the Riverside Fountain, a fountain with colorfully illuminated water fountains. Another fountain commemorates the "USS Savannah", the first steamship to cross the Atlantic. Passing a memorial to the soldiers of the Second World War and the African-American Monument, we come to the "Georgia Queen". It is one of two paddle steamers that you can use to take tours on the Savannah River. Finally, we come to the Waving Girl statue, which commemorates Florence Martus. Between 1887 and 1931, she waved to every ship entering or leaving with a handkerchief or lantern. Legend has it that she did it out of love for a sailor.
A steep staircase takes us from East River Street up to Emmet Park. Here we see the mighty Virginia oaks that are so typical of the South for the first time. They are covered with Spanish moss, a type of bromeliad. It almost looks like tinsel. A fairytale sight!
We continue to drift through the historic old town. Beautifully restored houses in the style of antebellum architecture, quiet avenues and lush parks characterize the picture. We walk under a roof of leaves and Spanish moss. At Forsyth Park, we come across Savannah's landmark, a beautiful fountain that was supposed to ensure the drinking water supply over 150 years ago. The Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters, a museum with a historic mansion and associated slave quarters, is unfortunately closed today for Easter.
Chippewa Square is another park with impressive, moss-covered trees. But it is not a tourist pilgrimage destination because of the statue of James Oglethorpe, the founder of Savannah. The "park bench" scene at the beginning of the movie "Forrest Gump" was filmed here. The park bench is no longer visible, however, it was just a prop.
We continue past the First Baptist Church, the oldest church in Savannah. Life is pulsating around the City Market! In the adjacent streets we look for a restaurant for dinner. There are "grits", the traditional corn grits of the southern states.
After Savannah we drive further south on our 3-month road trip through the USA. Our next destination is Florida!

Hallo!
