5 Tips for Planning a Straight Line Mission
There are already some fantastic instructional videos out there for planning your first straight-line adventure, including ua-cam.com/video/Rr_wDibVIHo/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/7EJmutYVxTc/v-deo.html. This is my contribution. I've put together a few more tips to help avoid some common mistakes. Let me know if you have any questions, updates, or corrections to anything I've said in the video - I'll keep a note of them below.
Corrections:
None so far...
Straight-Line Mission clips are mostly from my own channel, but some are taken from @GeoWizard and @fieldhouseboys. I forgot to label them this time, but GeoWizard's clips are the ones with him in and Archie's is the one with the inflatable duck.

TRANSANGLIUM 1: Can I Cross England in a Straight Line Before GeoWizard?
Переглядів 13 тис.5 місяців тому
It's England time, baby! Straight line missions have been around for a while now. I've watched many of them from other members of the community and learned a lot: what to do and - more importantly - what not to do! With that knowledge, along with my own experience, it was time to put together the "perfect" straight line adventure. This is the culmination of every dismal success and glorious fai...
Straightest Roads Across US Cities
Переглядів 1,5 тис.Рік тому
This was a fun side project while I was in the USA earlier this year. I've tried walking in as straight a line as possible across several European cities. With their "random" road networks they always throw up interesting challenges, but I was aware that an American "gridiron" city would make things a lot easier. While the ready-made straight lines aren't as interesting to walk as their imperfe...
Are There Actually Any Straight Lines Across Manhattan?
Переглядів 1,9 тис.Рік тому
Happy 4th of July, rebel scum! Manhattan in New York City is full of straight roads, but do any of them go all the way across? Walking straight across the island isn't as simple as you might think. After crossing a major European city in a corridor 200 metres wide, I ventured to the land of baseball and mandatory tipping to see how much easier it would be there. During my trip I did a couple of...
Walking the Straightest Line Across Scotland | World Record [Part 2]

Closed captions are available. I know it's tough to hear my support crew in a few places. I leave the perfectly placed haven of the Finnich Cottages to continue my second attempt at crossing Great Britain in a straight line. The conditions remained absolutely perfect and I wasn't about to let them go to waste! Say hello to a few new characters in my rag-tag group of supporters as I explore some...
Walking the Straightest Line Across Scotland | World Record

My second attempt at crossing Great Britain in a straight line. Closed captions are available (and especially useful if you can't hear my support crew). This time I won't be so easily stopped. In preparation my support crew and I scouted out parts of the line, visited rest stops and set up equipment caches. We tested waterproofing methods for my boots and stripped my rucksack down to the bare m...
Straight Line Across Scotland Practice Run (Attempt 1)

I'm a big fan of @GeoWizard and @SummoningSalt. This video is a bit of an homage to both of their styles: straight-line missioning meets speedrun documentary. I try to cross Scotland in a day without leaving a corridor 50 metres wide. A lot was working against me from the beginning: the weather was awful, the thorn bushes were thick and I only had one free day to do it in. But I wanted to give ...
Cardiff Quickie | First "Bronze" Straight Line Across a City
Переглядів 4,8 тис.Рік тому
As far as I know, this is the first time a major city has been crossed in a straight line by unofficial community standards. It's a "bronze" attempt by GeoWizard's ranking system: no more than 100 metres' deviation in either direction. The GoPro has been swapped out for an iPotato this time due to technical difficulties. I've tried boosting the volume but my voice is still quiet in places, so e...
How To Walk In a Straight Line (PyCon UK 2022)
Переглядів 2,9 тис.Рік тому
Ever wondered what the most direct route is across your home town? If you have, you're a bit weird. Earlier this year I started working on some Python code that would find the straightest line across London using only public transport and footpaths. London is big and dense so the lines I found deviated by over 250m from perfectly straight. On a more recent trip to a programming conference in Ca...
Tube Challenge | Speedrunning the London Underground

Bruce, Al and I try to break the speed record for visiting every London tube station. The "Tube Challenge" is now over 60 years old but with 2 new stations the record has been reset for the first time since 2008. Opportunity calls. A write-up of the day (with some juicy extra details) is also on the Tube Challenge forum: www.tubechallenge.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3740. GoPro support have since...
Straight Across London | An Urban Straight Line Mission
Переглядів 104 тис.2 роки тому
I try to cross Greater London in a day without leaving a corridor 500 metres wide. Unlike the open countryside (check out the channels below) a city is pretty much impossible to navigate linearly. Every conurbation will throw up its own challenges, but this seems to be approaching the lower bound for London. Check out the follow-up video on how I computed the straightest line across London: ua-...

Hold on Ally… I’ve just noticed that you got 3rd place on the record for the tube All Lines Challenge!?! Why was there not a video on this :( there’s literally no recording anywhere of a run of this challenge anywhere near that speed

@@allys_adventures omg you need to release the footage… like even unedited! Pleaseeeee! so many tube enthusiasts would LOVE to see a fast run. I only first saw this challenge recently from the channel ‘It's All About The Journey’ and I was so impressed with their 44 minute run (within their video of going on all the tubes+national rail operators etc. in london). I cant imagine what 35 minutes could possibly look like because 44 seemed almost flawless to me!

Nice video, I know there are degrees of variance and an allowance for strying slightly offline - but how can a straight line mission have so many corners and non straight lines ????

It's an excellent addition to have the map on the left hand side. That must have taken time to do, but was great to watch. Hope this video takes off soon, I think these early straight line missions will stand the test of time.

Was really looking forward to this and ended up not watching most of it because I didn't have a clue what was going on. Where was the narrative? In the edit, each section could have been prefaced by a small intro: this where we are, this is what we are aiming to achieve next, these are the potential problems, this is how we are doing so far, this is our overall strategy, etc, BUILD THE STORY!! All the best stories have jeopardy and potentially you had more than enough to create a really exciting episode. OK, it would have been a longer video, but a real treat for those of us who like this sort of thing. Particularly disappointed because everything else about this adventure was obviously so meticulous in its preparation. Your output is always well presented but I don't think this video does your efforts justice.

Yes, you can't rely on Google for rights of way. The best still is (and always has been) Ordnance Survey large scale maps - and they have the whole country covered. You can buy them at Stanfords in Covent Garden, or any good bookstore like Foyles (the biggest in the World). I think Stanfords is better - I often take my tourist friends there who want to explore the London that many tourists never get to see.

Nice work. When I saw your conference video I thought this was so easy I might try it, but after watching this there is no way I'd go crawling down those rivers. I think some city planners should do straight line city planning to boost tourism. 😉

Nice! Is there a video of your actual walk?

  • @DavidShepheard
    @DavidShepheard 2 місяці тому

Nice work! Many of houses at the start of your video would have been built by the Metropolitan Railway Company. Unlike other early railway companies, who bought land for railways, built the railways and then sold off the excess, they wrangled a deal to build both railways and houses. Many of their old (pre-London Underground) stations had estate agent offices in them. They would sell Londoners on the idea of "moving to the country" and the people who bought their houses also became their passengers. So they made money at both ends. They pushed the suburbs further and further from London, with this scheme, until the counties around London rebelled and lobbied for house building near London to be banned. Ironically, the Green Belt laws made countryside stations less economically viable than ones surrounded by lots of houses and after the London Transport Passenger Board took over the Metropolitan Railway and was ordered to run London Underground for profit, they closed down the northern extremes of the Metropolitan Railway, rather than electrify lines going to places with low populations. Many of the railways out of London, that stop before exiting London were planned to be longer and got cut back because it was considered to be pointless to build stations on land where houses were banned. Anyhoo the TLDR version is that, if it was not for long dead NIMBYs, you would have been doing a much longer walk, as Metroland massively expanded London at a rapid rate.
