It is thrilling to stand and watch, exhilarating!
Back in the day when Colchester had a proper bus station!

Things are sooo different now!..
I feel obliged to leave a note here with my story. At a local auction recently in Stockport I bought five large old storage tins, each with a round lid and decorated with chinese characters and patterns. They were obviously of some age, well used and a bit bashed but still complete, functional and attractive. They all had the remnants of old sticky labels and sellotape on them and in a couple (after prising open their lids) I actually found a few coffee beans. I also came across a small label (could be a blank price label) stuck on the bottom of one that said "Jacklins Colchester". I wondered if it was possible that the tins could have come from this establishment, a long shot but thought I'd investigate on the Internet. Imagine my astonishment to see trhe actual tins in this video, complete with their original coffee contens labels - they first appear on a shelf as a set of three at 4m30s into the video; Im guessing I have the set of five tins that appear slightly later on a lower shelf at 4m 55s. What are the chances of actually seeing the tins in situ?!! I must say I'm delighted and very thankful to the Colchester History Channel for posting this video and allowing me to have provenance for my purchase 🙂
Hi, This very interesting. Does anyone remember the first Tesco store in Colchester? It was in Culver Street East. John

I am ex RN. . As a young man I learned how to drive a car on Boxted Airfield. I have now lived in Australia for fifty years. Went that missing man flight went over I burst into tears. ( I am now 75 years old. You would think it would not affect me so much but you can never thank those heroic men and women enough, who laid down their live so we could all live free.
It was a general hospital too don’t believe all the hype as it sells more.
Smell that coffee now ❤️
Walking in the Air from The Snowman.
I have such happy memories of Jacklin’s as a former Colcestrian. I used to go there in the sixties and seventies with my family and loved the toasted tea cakes which came under silver lids. So sad that it has to go - I loved the film - I even remember the staircase up to the restaurant and the lovely smells on the ground floor of tobacco, freshly ground coffee and chocolate -sadly missed….
Not sure where the Elf and safety is at Tiptree ! Worker trips over the pallet on the floor !!! AND THEN throws a moldy grapefruit in the bin but ignores the fact that the surrounding grapefruit are covered in mold ! I'm rethinking my shopping preferences. In fact just making a large amount of marmalade at home instead.
When was this filmed?
early 2003
When life was normal.
Ah! Good old woolies, how I miss that store. Most of my childhood was spent in those stores while my mother stocked up on everything from my Dads sandwich meat to our Christmas presents..wonderful days that I will always miss.
I lived in Tiptree during the 80’s & 90’s, I was then in my mid twenties & thirties. I remember the waft of oranges coming across the fields when they would make the marmalade. There is a wonderful museum there & you can visit the tea rooms for fresh cream scones & Tiptree strawberry jam at certain times of the year. There is also a produce & gift shop where you can buy their jams & other related produce. Sadly I had to move after living there for around 12 years. Tiptree is a very special place & I miss it.
Where is tiptree?? I lived with my husband and children for 3 months in the Chester area. Would have loved to see this!!! I eat these jams here in the states 😋
I wasn’t present at the opening but I remember the new post office & I’ve used it frequently over the years.
It would be a lot easier to ring in the traditional way with a wheel and rope. Also that is incredibly dangerous. Still they are unique
Thank you for posting this, my Mum and sister are in it - such a lovely memory
How lovely. Loved this shop and there's a clip of my late mum and my sister walking outside the shop. Made my day seeing Mum. Thanks for this great memory.
Can’t stop listening to it. Masterpiece
Were they lost?
Just had some, absolutely lush.
id prefer to ring by rope and wheel as tower bells are rung english style but this sounds nice
Great place to buy my cigars, I also went out with one of the girls there back in the 80s
Great film, thanks!
wonder why he didnt he lease the business to another owner such a shame
Where are the mongs?
I think this was when all of the mongaloids had been removed

Hardly a history. A bit of a hoch poch. We sell a professionally produced DVD through our website. www.boxted-airfield.com
That may be so, but was a lovely video all the same :)
I just ordered the book. Thank you BoxtedAirfield Museum.
😅😅
My partner, Linda Stones, worked at 'Jacklin's' in the early 1980s on all of the counters. This video brought back many memories, but what couldn't be shown she said was the sound of the creaking woodwork as you went upstairs and the aroma of the place; a mixture of coffee, chocolate and fine tobacco. Mr Jacklin was an exacting and kind employer, fondly remembered by her.
Wonderful memories thank you so much.
Great video mate I remember the old boy
We need more frequent videos!!
