Stop Hating Your Own Hobby! | Collector's Rant

In this video, I go on a bit of a rant about current and former collectors spreading negativity about the hobby of retro game collecting. It's a weird phenomenon that I keep seeing as collectors unload their video games and subsequently try to convince others to do the same.

    So, are they worth it or am I better off buying random lots of games from Ebay?

    • @MrKanejoe1
      @MrKanejoe1 9 місяців тому

      Well...I will say that with RGT you are pretty much guaranteed that the games work. If they don't for whatever reason, you can email them and they will make it right. With eBay you never know what you'll get in terms of condition, etc. and whether they will send you 3 copies of Silent Service and 2 copies of SMB/Duckhunt. I look at the service as more of a novelty/entertainment thing, rather than a value for your money type of thing. So it kind of depends on your expectations.

    Fair warning, long comment incoming. I have seen the kinds of videos you are talking about and I understand where you're coming from. Everyone has a story with their game collections. We go through phases as collectors. I was a game collector for 15 years and I can certainly tell you that I was not the same person I was 15 years ago. In a way, I never "grew up" because I started collecting retro games at 10 years old. For the past 15 years, I amassed a collection of 3,000 retro games on a very small budget. Console games, PC games, vintage computers, arcade games, everything. But a big problem was that I would buy a game, put it on a shelf and never play it. I had games that I bought 10 years ago and never played even once. I became a shelf collector. Not all game collectors play their games and I fell into that trap. I bought so many games because I was mildly curious about them and I was spending very little money, about $3 per game on average. There was an opportunity cost of finding a game for a very cheap price that I thought I would never see again. In a way it was an addiction of getting a good deal and buying just to buy. Overtime I felt fatigued and overwhelmed because I was constantly surrounded by a large game collection. My collection continued to grow, but my space did not. I was constantly surrounded by walls of games that I had no real connection to. I knew little to nothing about them. Sure I always had my favorite games that I always loved to played. But I had a massive backlog of well over 1,000 games that I had never played before. I'm making this sound awful but it took me literally years to accept the fact that I needed to stop collecting and start downsizing. I no longer felt proud of my collection and in some ways, I felt ashamed. I have watched lots of videos on people selling off their game collectors to try to understand this phenomenon for myself. I think the videos you are referring to are a visual reflection of the challenges and frustrations that people have had with collecting games over a long period of time. They had spent years collecting, spent thousands of dollars and now they are ready to move on. They are not necessarily telling the viewer to sell their own collections, but rather these collectors are telling their stories. Most of their friends and family aren't into the same hobby so they just want to be heard by someone on UA-cam who understands what they are going through. These videos may also be an indirect response to this "show off" culture where people brag about how many games they have or how much their game collections are worth. I remember the UA-cam retro game community in the late 2000s and it was certainly smaller and more humble back then. Grading video games existed but it wasn't a popular service. The expensive games were worth thousands, not tens of thousands. There wasn't as much pressure to own or to play certain games. There were hardly any videos of people selling off their large game collections. There wasn't as much jealousy and hate. Everything seemed simpler. You are probably already be aware of this, but I'm just saying that the times were significantly different. Overtime there has been this growing "competition" where UA-camrs are trying to compete for the algorithm and outperform other channels with clickbait titles. Retro game collecting has become significantly more popular and in some ways it is a cut throat competition. I have seen it first hand. Collectors can go nuts over buying games for a good deal and aren't afraid of screwing over someone else. If there is any hate in this hobby I feel it is because this is not the same hobby it was when these collectors started. I think overtime more and more people grew to focus more on obtaining a massive game collection and not so much playing games that they already had. We involved ourselves in a culture of continually accumulating more and more stuff and rarely or never selling anything. Collectors offload their collections because there must be some kind of struggle to some degree. The most prevalent reason as to why someone would want to sell their game collection (if they are financially stable) is because they are frustrated with the fact that they have too many games that they don't play. I have heard this time and time again and have watched short term and long term collectors exit the hobby for this reason. Some of this "hate" you are seeing is coming from ex-collectors who have just exited the hobby entirely and are just glad to move on. Some people are just gamers now, some have quit gaming entirely. You have made it clear in this video that you don't feel the same way and that is perfectly fine. I liked what you had to say. For me, I hope to continue downsizing my collection to a much more reasonable number. I still love video games but I am no longer buying more. I really want to get back to a smaller collection that it much more curated to my personal tastes. Sorry for the long comment but I have a lot of thoughts on this topic!

    • @MrKanejoe1
      @MrKanejoe1 10 місяців тому

      While your comment is a bit...long...I think you raise some good points. As someone over the age of 40, I have often thought about where this thing ends. The curated collection is appealing, but for now I'm happy to keep doing what I'm doing.

    I think alot of people starting collecting when Covid hit. Now a few years later when the things have calmed down, they ask why do I have this stuff now? I know alot of people see the prices now and think its a good time to sell. My issue was just buying crap I didn't really need. Now my collection really is what I want to play or what I'm attached too. I still collect but Im really more focused on what I collect. Great video Joe. Great to listen to other people's opinions on these subjects.

    • @MrKanejoe1
      @MrKanejoe1 Рік тому

      Yeah I think there are different experiences and situations. I tried to address some of those in my video. I personally started collecting prior to the pandemic, so it doesn't really apply to my situation. I try to focus on games for consoles I really care about, but I will admit I have a lot of games I'll never play.

    Ouch… tough box this time. Like you said at the end. Handheld games are tough to get in these boxes, especially DS/3DS. I totally agree that their website needs a massive upgrade. You can always share a google doc with them for your larger collections. I have been way happier with VGM than I was with RGT from a value standpoint but I think a lot of it depends on the systems you are selecting. But you are right, with a little more effort on their website it would make the service a bit more attractive for collectors.
