Very fitting tribute for John Lyall in the Boro vs. West Ham semi final game, which West Ham won 1-0, courtesy of a Marlon Harewood piledriver.
Crazy guy in town..

He was sitting there, raving for like half an hour...Legend.
Sometimes some things are just necessary, this was one of them as any true hammer would know rip Mr Lyell, Mr West Ham Utd !
I'm watching this video for at least 10 years and I'm shocked that it still has 63k views.
Just like at the London stadium a few years ago when Elizabeth passed away ! The HAMMERS fans are a loyal special bunch who stick by there own to the end x
Love it. What we once was.
I remember getting slated in work on the Monday and being told I was being disrespectful. I just said it proves you are not a West Ham fan as any one who was would know it was the biggest sight of respect West Ham fans could pay the man for every magic moment that he brought to our club! RIP John!
Different class ⚒❤️
the forebears of the minutes applause...the courage of the instigator here is to be admired..IRONS
and GOD BLESS JOHNNY LYALL...absolute gentleman
Johnny lyall’s claret and blue army what a legend.RIP😃👍⚒
I love this clip. What a send-off.
i was at this game first class hammers fans un- matched
I think it was impossible to lose that game with that level of support from the fans, imagine being a West Ham player in that atmosphere, you'd have no choice but to win or die trying!
I was lucky enough to have met John Lyall a couple of times but my favourite occasion was before the famous 8-1 win over Newcastle. I was 12 and went to the dressing room to have my photo taken with Mark Ward. Afterwards John Lyall said to me to sit with him in his office and he chatted with me for 45 mins. As a child, it was a fantastic memory that I've never forgotten. he was a wonderful man. If there is a heaven, he would've been overwhelmed by the passion, pride and love that West Ham fans will always have for him!!
What a man! .. I went to Chadwell Health to watch the first team in pre-season training in the late 80's .. Turned out they arranged a behind closed doors friendly in Cardiff the night before, so no first teamers were there .. Sensing our disappointment, he asked me and a mate back to his office for a chat .. He would have been so busy at that time of year, too, but always seemed to have time for people judging on stories like this ..
That’s amazing. I was about the same age at that game, probably just a few rows away from you in my old seat in the lower West stand. What a night that was? The goals just kept coming!
I've recently found the newspaper from this day and the photo of harewood after he scored is pure passion/XTC/relief. It's magical.
That was not billy gardner , started the chant it was my husband Billy Page he done it for all the west ham fans around the world , coyi' s
Tracey Page actually I started the chant so not sure why you think it was your husband. I heard someone walking up to the ground still shout it and I just went for it
Whoever it was it was a great gesture and done for all of us.
@@paintsilj it could have been Gardner you heard mate? I travelled up with Jono and a few Southend lads and they were all discussing applauding the minutes silence which was unheard of then but is the norm now..... Not sure about the supposed 'sunderland fans' boo-ing though? Good memories and day out 👍
Boro fans obviously not understanding the sentiment, thick bastards.
Still get goosebumps from this.
Same
I've never seen this till now, I was on a rugby tour in Amsterdam and was ruined by the time the game was on the TV in a bar so missed the start....wow....RIP John ⚒
Didn't even go to the game, but the local pub I was at was rocking. This is what supporting West Ham is about.
Got Nigel Reo-Coker's boots after the match! Absolutely incredible..
Pardew is such a muppet!
8 Years on now. Thanks for the memories John. '79-86 were the best years of my life following WHU.
it was lifelong WHU fan Bill Gardner who had agreed on route to start the chant that afternoon
Was it really bill who started it?
steve9542000 definitely not Bill. I started it after hearing some bloke shout it who was still walking into the stadium. great day!!
Brilliant tribute to a great man. I'm an Ipswich fan and Johnny Lyall did a lot for us in the nineties, winning the old second division and guiding us through two and a half seasons in the premiership. RIP John Lyall, Hammers legend.
I too was at this game, the guy who started the chant was just in fron of where I was sitting. I didn't quite know what to make of it, but I joined in the chant. Very Spine chilling to this day.
how does the guy called WestHamUnitedFC1985 not know what this game is
Supahdupahguy81 do u even know what we were saying!! John lyalls claret and blue army live forever
I get shivers every time I watch this great tribute for a top man
Apologies, recorded it on a banger laptop, I'll get round to re-doing it soon. Got tons of clips to upload.

Yes, Villa Park in April 2006.
It was the semi-final of the FA Cup, so we were allocated half the stadium.
HAhahahahahahahaha
How I miss these times...
little 10 yr old
U SUK
John Lyall. Kudos, top fella
I was there, amazing tribute and amazing day. Took a lot of guts to start that on his own. It was the Boro fans booing, but now the minutes applause is standard.
It was rumoured to be Bill Gardner who started the chant.
i was there watching back makes me well up, the good old pardew days
great day and a brilliant moment for all of west ham, we started the trend that led to 1 minute applauses! COYI
@bowlocks Bloody Sunderland fans... Not even their cup semi, and they turn up to be disrespectful :D
it was the sunderland fans booing, silly northern c***s didn't understand' lol. rip johnny, 5 years today coyi
Definitely Sunderland fans
@RicheyWHUFC Richey, I got around 20 minutes of highlights from that game (Sky Sports highlights), I'll try and upload them when I get time,
Thanks for this clip! I have been trying to find it for ages! Do you know where I can get the full match from anywhere.
It took a lot of courage for the lone supporter to start that chant during the minute's silence, it could have gone horribly wrong. However, within a couple of seconds EVERYBODY had spontaneously joined in - it just felt right. I'd like to give thanks to that lone fan for giving me an unforgettable memory, and giving John a proper West Ham tribute - it was spine tingling being in the middle of that, a truly emotional experience. Johnny Lyall's Claret And Blue Army!
brooking06 that was me you can thank. it was a spur of the moment thing. couldn't believe it when everyone joined in
