In San Leandro and North Hayward they are going to create a trail and greenway adjacent to the tracks soon. Apparently UP didn’t want to give up the rights to the track there, even if reimbursed, so they had to plan around it. So UP still has some long term plans to use that section?

The curve that crosses hwy 89 is called Hollenbeck loop although not an actual loop. Its a 10 degree curve the tightest curve on a BNSF main line and is in the middle of 10 miles of 2.2% grade. Its sad to see the area now as the Dixie came through there burning everything. You can now see the track easily from 89 as all the trees are gone. Thanks for sharing your vid with us.

Great view of how vast and beautiful is the lay of our land. I’ve ridden the Zephyr many times, and this vantage was a surprise. It’s the view you would get from the old dome observation car. Thank you very much.

Thanks for the update. Any word on UP filing paperwork to permanently abandon that section? Even not, UP has the Niles and Coast Subs for all through trains, so, no hurry for repairs.

Very cool. My dad worked at a warehouse on Minnesota Street just a few blocks away. I remember visiting as a kid about 1969. They were a small company, had to borrow a forklift to unload boxcars in the middle of the street, then move everything into the warehouse quickly to clear the street. Excellent video documenting my home town subdivision. I really enjoyed the shots of all the crossings through Hayward and the little-seen action on the Melrose end of the line. Plus the Carpenter side of operations at Shine are interesting.

Trains 3 and 5 can also travel through the freightyard of Galesburg and join the normal line at 2:03:06. Trains 3 and 4 move to and from the north at 2:05:00 and runs over the CZ at 2:07:57.

i talked to a up conductor on a manifest train in oakland a sd70AH was leading the horn was a killer it bled my ears

i have know idea what engineer that was but i have a friend that runs that train
