Mk.gee Interview on BBC Radio 1
EDIT: Please note, the background music is part of the original audio and I can’t take it out. Apologies if it is distracting.
Mk.gee interview from February 21, 2024 by Benji B on BBC Radio 1. Mike talks about the ethos for his album Two Star and the Dream Police, liminal spaces, "human" music, and being a jazz kid.

I love that he picked “I Want” ☺️ such a great track! He’s so right about trying to hard to be “human” - I think about the trend of like someone saying something in the studio at the end of the song - like laughing or like “did we get that?” - and they totally fake it!! To make it sound more real….it is evil honestly
I forget - some big artist said when you hear a song that feels fresh - but also like it’s always existed - you know you’ve hit a good song. That’s this album
The way the melodies are so catchy - I’m absolutely like - I MUST’VE heard something like this - or maybe even this - before!! The melodies do feel familiar - but also entirely new!! He nailed it - he named the liminality 😅
If this album was a book it would literally be catcher in the rye for me amazing…
How the hell in gods name did he manage to actually conceptualize this and then execute, i for sure thought it was by mistake, this guy is a genius
something about his music is so comforting and relaxing. He’s amazing and i keep he keeps releasing stuff 🫶🏻
The first modern artist that really grabbed me. My parents always had their artists like Prince or Bowie which was like their musical identity. This guy is that for me. Completely grabbed my entire attention. Two Star and The Dream Police is my entire playlist.
When something is slated as “whatever” of the year, early, then cleans up at the awards at years end 🎩 1 Silence of the lambs 2 Kevin Pillar MLB 3 Peking Duck
Mad respect to this dude

Love to hear Mk.Gee Is a Gooner!
The background music is distracting [to me] ..just some honest feedback
Love the interview, don’t love the music over top of it. I just wanna turn it off.
If it were helpful, I’d call him a genius. More than that, he is prophetic (without all the obsessive dogmatism). Mkgee points humans to a new era of spiritual potentiality. Beautiful, uncanny, inspirational.
the way he captures his album in words is spot on to how it feels, this is truly genius work
Such a good album
need the album on CD NOWWW
Vaporwave Peter Cetera
He filled the liminal spaces within me with warmth and freedom
I have 3 loves in my life My girl Mk.gees music Arsenal fc AS IF he’s a gooner !!!!!
He nailed exactly what he was going for. Something nostalgic but different too.
Hahahah Mk.gee finishing the host's "when this song came out" with "best song ever" is so rad
new low always gets me
great interviewer
Thanks for uploading- love Benji and Mkgee
is this his voice??? i am in love!!!!
Mk.Gee confirmed GOONER??!! 😧
Actual makes my brain tingle when I listen to his music.
So the album is based on the backrooms?!
My friend sent me this album and at first i thought i didnt like it, because it sounded so off and like the mix was so not what i expected it to be. and it wasnt until she asked me why that was “bad”, i started to understand the hyper- intentionality of the record. it made no sense that an artist with the technical talent he has drops the ball on the presentation. I dont think there is many artists thinking of the way Mk.gee is thinking right now.
Does anyone know the sound playing throughout the beginning of the interview? Would be greatly appreciated 🫶
He’s really the Jonathan Glazer of music. Everything has intention and purpose, it’s so powerful and almost overwhelming. Just a genius.
the background jazz is junk
MKGEE IS AN ARSENAL FANNNN RAHHHHHH COYGGGG
Familiar yet strange and one of a kind.he intentionally did it. I’m even more impressed. Speaking as an older fart than most of his fans
this guy is a genius icl
his aura is pulsating through the screen
My dad believed the song dream police was 30 years old
Can someone elaborate on what Mk.Gee means about the concept of people trying to sound “human” in today’s music? I’m a bit confused on what he means by that. Ironically, I felt his album felt extremely raw and in your face. I could hear the mess ups and impromptu moments. I could hear the imperfections. The scratches of tape. The rustling of strings and instruments. Which is what he described as human and evil In the interview. But am I missing something? 😅
i think he means people put effort to make songs ‘raw’ and ‘real’ when in reality it’s fabricated rawness
The most crisp voice to exist on this earth fr
discovered him yesterday this project is some of the best music i've heard in while
"there are no stakes, the stakes are not as high as people think" wow... this guy. Louis Cole and MkGee are the only two artist with a strong "song-writer/popular" element that are generational artist (*that i'm aware of). Artist that are ushering us into a new time, where music and things dont suck. if you know others on this level leave a note <3
14:32 mk.gee laughing for another reason
artists using the word 'record' to describe their art is so pretentious. no one outside of the industry uses that word to describe music, songs, albums. its like a right of passage to call your music a 'record'. Its not even a download, just a click at this point.
yeah calling the art you recorded a record is fucking gay. What, are painters gonna call the art they painted 'paintings' next? what's this world come too...
bore off
great interview, but do we really need this fucking stimming music underneath the talking? this feels like a subwaysurfer splitscreen tiktok
I'm so happy he chose "I want"! That's my favorite track from the album!!
In a year or two, all of us here are going to be playing the "I liked him before you" card, as the whole world will know his music.
Fucking genius. I’ve been obsesssedddd. Another commenter used the word hiraeth. I didn’t realize I craved this entire album until I heard it. Like something I was missing. After hearing this interview and finding out that it was purposely done. Incredible! Can’t wait to see you in September 😍😍
Mk.gee commenting on the 'evil' quality of working on a record for three years . . . I don't know if I'd use the word 'evil' but I agree it's a bit questionable to work on single rock record with 12 songs for a length of time that almost equals, like, Hendrix's entire career.
for how elusive Mk.gee is, i'm so shocked at how willingly he articulated his intention on this project, this was a great interview
