River P Showing like this is idiotic. It is so incredibly easy to do, as long as the horse is fat and can move with its head tucked in it doesn’t matter if they aren’t engaged or using their backs. The amount of people I know that never ride their horses but still manage to qualify and compete at HOYS is ridiculous. I am a dressage rider, and funnily enough whenever showriders and horses (yes this includes two pairs that went to HOYS and did very well) come to try dressage, even the most basic prelim tests, they do horrendously, barely getting about 65% and that’s if their lucky. The horses do not move correctly, their heavy on their forehand, do not engage their backs of hocks.. the riders are typically ineffective as they are taught to do nothing but sit and look pretty. Pointless event that people do because it’s easy to win sashes.

Minka Langehanenberg Ahem. Might I just say , most of the m&m riders are like that. Just sit , kick and hold on type of riders. Then , you get the riders who actually can ride with their legs and hands and control their horses. Unfortunately, a lot of new showing riders nowadays are what you described. Get the right introduction, produce the horse to a high level yourself and actually learn to ride - yeah , your gonna do pretty well. I love showinggggg :)

Anna Tansey I see very few genuinely good riders in the showing world. A lot are also bought to the top and the judges bribed which really is illegal but if someone’s bought you a fancy dinner and champagne they’re hardly going to tittle tattle.

Minka Langehanenberg Yes I totally agree :( It’s all the show producers and big names getting to Hoys , then you get those who are friendly with the judges so they can win. It is sad , but every so often a well done home produced comes along and wins everything, it just needs to be the right pair

@@eligil4629 So true. The winning horse had a pot belly second to none. I guess the actual horse is not as important as whose on it and how they look. A lot of these horses are croup high, not helped by the forward position of the riders like they're about to take a dump up there. I get it's meant to look elegant and the horses aren't meant to be able to actually hunt but no amount of fat can conceal a dropped back, they all look like they have Lordosis kyphosis from being worked consistantly incorrectly.
