    Hi Herbert, the 18-55 VR was the Kitlens of the D60, 2008. I know, because i've bought it. The D40 was being sold only with the 18-55 ED II lens (no VR, i know that 100%) Nikon Shooter since the FM film days. Greetings

      That's right. What I wanted to show is that the D40 works with all the 18-55mm kit lenses. Sometimes people upgraded to the VR lens. In my opinion the best 18-55mm is the newer VRII lens that can be collapsed when not in use. They are all great lenses. Cheers!

    Is the D40 already considered "vintage"? I bought mine in late 2009, so that's only 15 years ago. I agree with you, it is a great camera though. I haven't used mine in a few years (mainly due to The Event that must not be named) and the other day I discovered that both of my batteries had given up the ghost. I was worried for a moment - but it appears that many manufacturers are still making these batteries so I bought a Duracell brand replacement. I'm going to have to re-learn what I've forgotten about photography now :)

      Yes, I have done a preset white balance, and tried adjusting levels in custom optimize image and preset white balance. This has improved it a little, but not totally. I only shoot in JPEG, but will try JPEG/Raw and see if there is a difference. If not, I fear it’s just the sensor deteriorating given its age, so may have to just use it for shooting in black and white.

    I think you missed one significant light metering feature in the D40 when in manual mode...or at least it exists on my D40x though I expect D40 as well. The internal light meter still operates in manual mode so an external one is not needed nor is the photo trick. When in manual mode the exposure comp bar in both viewfinder and back info display switches from displaying exposure comp setting to what the light meter thinks your exposure will be compared to what it thinks is ideal based on the manual settings. Basically it says for your aperture and shutter settings if you are going to be over, under or right on. Since that indicator has a couple stops worth of range each way you can tell when you are way off of getting close and exactly whee you sit. Basically shows you what you are going in the same way if it were in an automatic mode and set that same amount of exposure comp. So you can do much better than just guess and snap a photo, you can use that to judge. Still even when I am in an automatic mode, I often snap a photo to see if I want to put in some comp o change comp setting. And as a footnote, my N2000 in manual mode will show what it says the speed should be for the set aperture rather than controlling it and even my FE2 when in manual the internal light meter will tell me what I should set while a mechanical indicator shows the manual setting. So just because you switch to manual doesn't mean the built in light meter is still available to use as a guide even going way back.

      I'm not quite sure I understand what you are saying. In my video I talk about lenses the D40 or D40x do not meter with. That would be non-AI, AI and AIs lenses. If I understand you correctly, you are talking about manual mode but with lenses the D40 and D40x meters with. This is basic manual mode with the meter making suggestions. But maybe I don't understand you correctly.

    • @andreaslack8379
      @andreaslack8379 2 місяці тому

      @@HerbsVintageTech okay, I missed that distinction, I wasn't testing with an older lens. I find it really surprising they have the metering in the lens and none at all in the body, that basically insures non compatibility with older lenses despite the same mount.

    • @HerbsVintageTech
      @HerbsVintageTech 2 місяці тому

      @@andreaslack8379 No problem. Metering is always happening in the camera body, never the lens. Backwards compatibility with older lenses was left out of the "entry level" and "mid-level" (like the 5xxx series) Nikons on purpose to save money and distinguish between those cameras and the "higher tier" ones. It was simply a selling point. What I wanted to show in my video is that even the lenses that don't meter work great with the D40(x) and the Nikon 3xxx series. Just just have to meter yourself. I see this as an opportunity to learn and grow as a photographer rather than see it as an incompatibility. If you check out my video on the Pentax K100D series you will see that Pentax built in the metering option for older lenses into their bodies. These are also good cameras to check out.

    • @HerbsVintageTech
      @HerbsVintageTech 2 місяці тому

      Apparently (as a commenter suggested), it depends on the raw developing software if you have the crop info in the raws or not. So the raws still contain all the information. So it looks like that would be great firmware update feature in the future: Let the photographer choose if the raw is cropped or not.

    Having a 6 mega pixel camera in 2024 isn't as crazy as it sounds if you understand a little bit about mega pixel settings I have a few cameras and never use the camera above a settings of 8 mega pixel which will give you a 6 by 4 photo that will look good on a 4k screen you don't really need a large amount of mega pixels unless you are a professional who takes photos for full page magazine shots or news papers which would be around A3 and A4 size so would then need up to 20 mega pixel sensor

    • @HerbsVintageTech
      @HerbsVintageTech 2 місяці тому

      Exactly. I have sold many photos from 6mp DSLRs for full page prints in magazines. One of my D40 images of Machu Picchu ended up in a full size ad from a travel company. You can enlarge the D40 prints to 24x36 inches and if the photo is good, nobody will ask you what camera it was taken with. The only time you need more megapixels is if you tend to crop a lot. Yet, then I would have a look at the focal length I'm using.

      @HerbsVintageTech 2 місяці тому

      That is actually hard to answer as I don't know what your photography looks like and what size and weight preferences you have for your gear. The 18-55 kit lens is an extremely versatile piece of kit. It's macro capabilities are not bad. There is a stabilized version available as well, albeit it is not as sharp. The 55-200mm VR lens is excellent and a good fit for the D40. For Macro and mild telephoto work, check out the 40mm f2.8 Micro-Nikkor. If you can live without autofocus (for macro manual focusing is preferable anyways), the Tokina AT-X 100mm f2.8 is a fantastic allrounder, from Macro to medium telephoto. The best money you can spend for your D40 kit is the 35mm f1.8 DX.

    My first DSLR was the K100D in 2006. Today I still own a K100D and an *ist DS, the predecessor of the K100D. One advantage of the *ist DS over the K100D is its prism viewfinder, which is much better for manual focusing. The *ist series started with the *ist D (prism viewfinder), followed by the *ist DS and the *ist DL. Note that the DL has a mirror viewfinder rather than a prism, just like the K100D/K100Ds/K110D. All *ist models lack IBIS. One nice feature of the *ist D is the flap in the base plate that allows easy access to the button cell that stores date and time settings. Unfortunately, Pentax omitted this handy feature from all subsequent bodies. Also worth mentioning is the so-called debug mode. All *ist models as well as the K100D and K110D have this mode available in the firmware. Not so with the K100Ds, you have to download this software separately (Pentaxforums is a source for such stuff). Debug mode allows fine tuning of the AF to compensate for front or rear focus, a feature not available on the mentioned models per se. AF tuning can only store one value at a time, so when I change lenses I quickly switch into debug mode to set the appropriate value for that lens. Once you get used to it, it takes about 15 seconds. Note, however, that there are settings in debug mode that can potentially damage your camera, so please read up well on what to do and what to avoid before you decide to try it out. Gruß und cheers!

    I have both the D40 and the D50. Not sure if they share the same sensor, but the image quality of the D50 is also very beautiful, rendering a film-like image, but with a larger body and slightly more functionality, as it has an inbuild focusing motor allowing the use of the full range of Nikon AF cameras in AF mode.

    Thank you for this nice overview of the K100D, one of my favorite cameras. Even in JPG the image quality is outstanding.

    Thanks for this great video. I still love shooting with my K100D, it's a great camera and lots of fun to use. Unlike some other big brands, Pentax didn't de-feature their cameras to protect sales of upper-end models, they gave you everything and the kitchen sink. It's a shame the market didn't fully recognise it at the time. Here's a fun tip if you want to feel like you're shooting an old Spotmatic with manual light meter switch: When using K lenses enable the optical preview, this stops down the lens but also turns on the meter so you can manually set your exposure in real time by adjusting the shutter speed. It works on all my Pentax bodies.

    I only shoot jpegs and I almost never edit so the camera I like the most is the one with the best jpegs.

    Did you try the D5000?

      Yes, I used most Nikon DSLRs up to the D810. The D5000 uses basically the same sensor as the D300, which is a good thing. For me the 5000 series didn't add a lot of value compared to the "entry level" Nikons. Same lens compatibility, same sensors, same image quality.
