Welcome to my channel. I post about farming, hunting, and fishing among other things.
Can We Get It To Run After 40 Years. 1948 REO Truck. Part 4
In part 4 we take a look at the engine now that it’s out of the truck. We get the oil pan off after making a major mess and then finally get it to turn over. We end up with two broken valves that we’ll have to replace.

This is the third video in which we are working on fixing this 1948 REO truck that had been sitting in a pasture for around 40 years. In this video we get the top of the transmission back on it and then pull off the radiator. We then decide that it would be best to go ahead and pull out the engine. Sure! Here’s an extended list of hashtags for your video: #REOTruck #ClassicTrucks #VintageRestor...

In this video we take a look at the spark plugs and see a lot of rust. We decide to pull off the head and realize that the cylinders actually look pretty good. We then take a look at the transmission and get it out of gear. #REOTruck #ClassicTrucks #VintageRestoration #1948REO #RestorationProject #TruckRestoration #VintageTrucks #ClassicEngine #TruckRepair #AntiqueVehicles #EngineRestoration #R...

Case suck👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
Wire cutters
If you have animals you have to do something about the holes
Are u a case or jd farmer? Im guessing ccase by this vid but could be wrong
We have both, but we are significantly more case ih.
@JonathanS78 ima case kid myself, we got both old and new, with little green But we never do the crime of attaching red-green or vise versa
if you have some cow dung in your pocket the bow would me more effective...jai hind!!!!
Yes!!! I love this song!
You need to get some fenders fir that tractor.
Awesome!!
@@williambrouwers5664 thanks.
It’s coming along!
Keep up the good work!!
Nice Farmall 400 Diesel 👍 I like the old Farmalls . Thanks for Sharing and Greetings 👍
So kinda like a md?
You guys are awesome!
The valve that broke was holding it.
I wish I had such a large space to work in.
Bro! Where are you located? What state? I’ve been through this process on my Power Wagon, never pulled it out of the frame! I would love to help you if you’re close enough!
@@JDawghasaTruck I’m in Kansas.
@@JonathanS78 😢a bit far for me
All the crap in the bell house had the fly wheel stuck, and the input shaft of the transmission may be seized up
When the oil pan was on you were pulling against a vacuum created by not opening and closing the valves for so many years. This condition was a product of the transverse Coriolis effect from sitting facing north while the moon and stars moved overhead for decades. It's just as well you didn't try to drain the oil as you may have suffered an explosive implosion and had oil all over the shop, ceiling, walls, everything including yourself. Don't even try to understand it. This is advanced physics.
@@akawireguy1197 😂
You need to invest in an engine stand.
That was hard to watch
@@guyward5137 yeah. It’s even hard watching it back myself. Especially when I’m talking about pulling the camshaft. I knew almost nothing about flathead engines before this, so I’m learning as I go along.
Dude, REO is a legend from where I come from.
No need to remove the camshaft to get the valves out just get a valve spring compressor and take them out while the engine is on its side
@@mariebennett5739 Yeah. I figured that out. I knew very little about flathead engines before this, so I’m learning as I go along. Thanks for the comment though.
I’ve got the identical truck that I’m in the process of restoring. My engine was free but needs a rebuild. Hardest thing to source so far has been the engine bearings. Point of reference, your truck has a generator, not an alternator. Alternators didn’t become common until to 60s. I’m really impressed to see your interest in getting this old truck going! I’m watching every episode. Best of luck!!
Thanks for the information about the generator. I hadn’t realized that. I have a IH 400 that also has a generator and not an alternator, so I should have known that. I’m also a little concerned about how hard it’s going to be to source parts that I’ll need.
This has been a great series so far. Keep up the great work!
7.7x58 💪
My dad had a 1947 Reo truck on our farm back when I was a kid in the 50s.such a great looking truck cheers from OZ
Keep the political shit to yourself!
Subscribed, now waiting anxiously for next video.
It’s out now.
Good decision on taking the engine out and taking it apart. I see so many videos on UA-cam where people take an old stuck engine and hammer and jerk on it to get it unstuck. Sometimes it works out okay but you risk breaking rings, piston and valves, bending push rods, and doing other internal damage. That's all good an fine if you really don't care about the engine and just creating content. But if you plan to use that engine you did the smart thing. In the case of a REO I would imagine getting engine parts is difficult if not impossible. And yeah even taking an engine apart doesn't guarantee you won't break something but it's a much safer option. With all that said that truck's a great candidate for a Cummins if you're rich💲💲. Look forward to seeing more.
@@jeffd1294 yeah. We’re going to have to replace some valves. I’m not sure yet how hard it is going to be to find valves that are the right size. Hopefully they are pretty standard. Thanks for the comment.
Pull the cover off the lifters, spray penchant oil on the lifers. Let them soak.😮
Great stuff, subscribed.
Needs 4.3 v6
Great looking truck. I'd not heard of a REO before. Keep up the good work.
@@andrewmacdonald4833 I hadn’t heard of REO either. They weren’t super common. They are rare enough that getting replacement parts is going to be near impossible.
@@JonathanS78, keep at it...I did a quick search of the truck type..and they are out there...patience will be your friend in any restoration.
Do you think you may have a couple valves open?😅
Dont forget to vote folks . Vote red b4 thngs like this could be a thing of the past.
Bro, no one is going to ban 70 year old trucks. Or ICE engines.
@@drew4323 didnt say that bud im saying they want to stop oil production in this country youre not paying attention.
@@bobobrazil1973oil has had a stronghold for so long I seriously doubt oil companies will let that happen. If they do, guess what you can run any of these old rigs on wood gas so really doesn't matter anyway. None of this will ever go away for anyone except the ignorant sheep that need to die off anyway. And btw you never mentioned a single thing about oil in your initial comment so maybe read wtf you wrote before telling people to 'pay attention'.
@@bobobrazil1973 "they" don't. Domestic oil production is at the highest it has ever been, ever.
MOVING CAMERA VERY FAST
I learned something about Reo trucks. Will you
Scrap junk
Surely if they drain, that means the rings aren't seized..I've done the same thing with my Dodge and they do drain through...some faster than others.
@@andrewmacdonald4833 yeah. I didn’t actually think that the pistons were seized. They looked really good. It was obviously something else holding it back. I had wrenched and pulled on the engine for a long time and nothing would happen. It wouldn’t budge an inch.
Sure that trailer will make it? They have trailer safety inspections for a reason.
Yeh, it looked a bit ropey...
Manuel turn over, valves open
We tried manually turning it over. I was literally twisting the solid steel handle.
A rare truck.
Little too rare. Getting parts is going to be ridiculously hard.
@@JonathanS78 Just drop the body on a 1 ton.
A true tractor
Brings back great memories of doing this on our farm roads
Love them 400/450 deisels sound like music
That real iron still working!!!
Yeah. Around 70 years old and still going.
John deere diesel
Was the 450 diesel the same with 2 motor to start
No. All IH diesels from this time ran on one motor. The motor could be run on gas to start it and diesel to run on. This is opposed to John Deere’s which had two separate motors. One motor was gas to start it and the other one diesel to run it on.
@JonathanS78 I meant was as the ih450 diesel started on gas then switched to diesel
@@TeresaJohnson-ew4us yes. All diesels from this time had to have some alternative gas starting system.
You also need to put your lever back to diesel setting so those valves cool down slowly and don’t warp happened to me.
@@markschwab7829 yeah. I realized after I made this video that I forgot to mention that.
That’s a lot of pork😂
