    But doesn't crowd equity mean they have some financial leverage in the film? Or are there really that many people giving you money without any security?

    @thevandalistshow because of the nature of the piece being equity funding, did you have to put in money to legally retain ownership over your own film? Could you transfer points to crew in exchange for pay? Just thinking about how I would apply this on a much smaller scale

    Hi, My name is Mikias, I’m 24 years old and I live in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.I run an advertising company that collaborates with some of the biggest brands in the country but I have a passion for storytelling and aspire to create a short film that could win festivals or even an Oscar. If you’re open to it, I would love to share my script synopsis or even script with you and hear your insights. By the way, my great grandfather was one of the Ethiopian soldiers who fought in the Korean war. Thanks alot.

    It's a dream of mine to make a short film I'm truly proud of, it's difficult to learn how to do that with a full time job and schedule. Are you able to recommend any resources in film making on a money/time budget?

    • @thevandalistshow
      @thevandalistshow 9 годин тому

      I hear you! You have to sacrifice somewhere, and so i freelance edit to pay the bills, whatever job that allows me most flexibility to work on my writing/directing... re resources, I'm planning on making a video about this for the next NEXT video, but there is no method that is as effect as just going out there to make shorts and failing!

    Question: (Great video by the way) Are these investors expecting returns on their investment? Are you pocketing any of it to keep yourself financially afloat to be able to keep making movies? How are you distributing? How are you making money on the movie?

    • @thevandalistshow
      @thevandalistshow 9 годин тому

      Yes they invest expecting an ROI, but they are fully aware that it could be little or take a while as film investments are inherently risky! And no, not pocketing any for the sake of my integrity... in fact loosing $ as I'm filling in here and there. We signed with an international sales agent with the rough cut! They will help sell to distributors to make back our $

    7:27 So I might be a little confused but it seems like the total crowd equity generated was around $400,000, and that leaves the rest of the $1 million to private equity right? How did you go about securing the private equity? Seems like you actually raised more privately? Are you saying that the momentum from the crowdfunding gave you leverage for private investors? Thanks!! super insightful and helpful video!

    • @thevandalistshow
      @thevandalistshow 9 годин тому

      All correct! Same strategy essentially, but targeting the bigger "accredited" investors only through the private raise. The crowd equity momentum allowed this to happen as there were enough people interested even after we closed out the campaign. :)

    I’m working on accumulating short film experience, so I’m curious how was your experience with short film festivals? Did you worked having in mind that you was gonna sell the films? How many money did you spend in entry fees? How can I now if a festival is worth the effort? Any other tip for having success during this first steps in the career of a young filmmaker?

    • @thevandalistshow
      @thevandalistshow 4 дні тому

      I had no idea the shorts were going to go anywhere! Most shorts don't make ROI. I only spent $ applying to the top maybe 15 festivals? Anything below top 20 or so isn't worth it. You don't know if you're gonna get in, it's a total lottery draw but worth playing if you feel you have a small chance. Sharing more soon throughout this year!

    A scary portion of fundraising to me is the almost certain guarantee that I'll have to assure a person that they'll make a return on their investment (when in reality I have no clue if a film will recoup the mil). Did you ever feel like you didn't have the answers to investor questions or were stretching the truth in these meetings?

    • @thevandalistshow
      @thevandalistshow 4 дні тому

      That's with any investor making ANY investment! Nothing is guaranteed. Fortunately, most investors are only investing their "fun money" and diversifying so it's irrelevant to you. I had so many meetings that after the 20th one, I had nailed my pitch and had answers to all their questions! I was always honest about the outlook of everything and how risky it can be

  • @nicktosti7487

    THOMAS I LOVE THIS, can't wait for the next one. Question for ya, when you were first making shorts how did you come about finding actors? For example, did you post on social media? Reach out to local acting classes? Print dozens of flyers and throw them up downtown?
