Mr Glyns Pickups Jazzmaster vintage pickup set is intended for the clean player needing a low powered Jazzmaster set with full tone, warmth and clarity.
mrglynspickups.com/2021/11/27/jazzmaster-vintage/
These pickups have smooth a jangly treble , always present, never harsh and distinctively Jazzmaster. The bass is clean, clear, woody and full of character and with the warmth of the original Jazzmaster pickups. The mid range is smooth and well balanced. Alnico II magnets give these pickups a clear, very musical quality.
Wound RWRP they hum cancel when both pickups are on.
Their clarity makes these pickups suitable for many musical styles and lend themselves well to pedals with the personality of the pickups shining through. Drenched in reverb and delay, grinding fat fuzz tones or even clean Jazz.
Jazzmaster vintage pickup design
This pickup set was designed around the standard 1MegOhm pots though work equally well with 500KOhm or 250KOhm. It’s really up to you which tone you prefer.
I’ve always had a fondness for offset guitars and Jazzmasters in particular. Is it the look? The smooth, clear treble? The versatile electronics? Probably all of those things. Jazzmasters are not like anything else, you either get it or you don’t.
I hope you enjoy these pickups, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed designing, and especially testing them. This time the rigorous testing that I put all my pickups through re-kindled my love of Jazzmasters. The sound of a pickup and the way it reacts to pedals and your amp change the way you play. I really like the direction these pickups have steered me in. I wish it was possible to demo the feel of a pickup not just the sound because the feel is a huge part of it.

less than 3 minutes, and on a beach. Thank you ! it helped
Thanks for taking the time to message, I'm glad it made sense to you.
"Yeah. I'll edit that out" Hahahaha. Sorry. Loved the very helpful video. Just thought that was funny. 🙂
I realized when I looked over the video that it would just seem more honest if it was one take.
@@MrGlynsPickups Haha. I know what you mean. I get a bit tired of all the jump cuts in so many UA-cam videos.
I just set the pickups low enough to where it doesn’t happen at all and then turn up the amp I am playing through
Came for the pickups they sound great but I also want to compliment your excellent playing.
Great sounding pickups! And great demo Darren! That Edwyn Collins opener took me back... As an aside I'm always jealous of guitarists with 'spider hands'. I've been trying to play guitar on and off for ages. I love guitar (and my Mr Glyns Cruel Mistress Telecaster pickups) and have been told by musos I have a good ear and feel but am in a constant battle with my sausage fingers!
I have yet to meet anyone who is happy with their playing.
Thanks Shaun! As Glyn says, we’re all insecure about our playing to a degree and I definitely am. I just hope that I was able to give a decent representation of the pickups. 🙂
@@darrenofdrivers Cheers Darren. Yeah mate, you showcased those pickups nicely. :)
So in tone caps, the higher the resistance, the darker the tone, but in pots, it's the opposite. Can you please clarify? Thank you. Awesome sound on those Jazzmasters.
Hi, this video is about volume controls not tone controls. Volumes don't usually have caps. Caps and pots are quite different things. So here's how a tone control works. Caps are measured in Farads and although they do lots of cool stuff all we need to know is that they let treble through. The number of Farads relates to which treble frequencies are let through. The confusing part is these high frequencies are not sent to be part of the signal but sent to earth to be canceled out. So as you turn the tone pot it starts engaging the cap and sending some of your signal through the cap and on to earth to cancel the high end. The cap decides which frequencies and the tone pot decides how much of those frequencies are killed off. A higher value cap like a .047mf will send more of the highs to earth than a lower value.
@@MrGlynsPickups Thanks for that detailed reply. I think what threw me was the discrepancy between pots--regardless of their function, and caps. Whereas a lower rated cap will allow more high frequency to pass, a lower rated pot lets less high frequency pass. Also, I was regarding caps in an amplifier circuit. The underlying reasoning is that farads in a capacitor and resistance in a pot are two different components, and conflating the functionality of the two is incorrect.
Hi Glyn, please excuse my ignorance, but wouldn't just turning the tone pot down a little have the same effect or just turning down the treble on the Amp if you preferred a not so bright tone, I turn the tone pot down on my J.M and Jaguar because I find them a little too bright, or would I be better off, in your opinion, just putting in 250K pots? I'm getting on in years and I do find it a bit confusing.
Nice!! Good and simple explanation for smooth brains like me!!
speaking from experience- mr glynn's pickups are incredible i've replaced my gibson custom historic *custom buckers* with his cloud 9's and i couldn't be happier or more impressed
Thanks Mate
Glorious!
Not to diss on Mr Glynn, but all soundbytes should diect to the mixing desk
Great playing Warren! Sounded a bit Jimmy Page towards the end there on the bridge pickup. Great sounding Pickups too Glyn. Well done both!
They real do sound good. Nice amount of bite and yet still single coil sounding. Great stuff man
Cheers
Sounds so good
Thank you
Great information and something to tinker with tomorrow!
Exactly, its something to tinker with. There's no right or wrong here.
i recently moved to P90's due to that's what was in a guitar a mate built. plugged into my usual amp set up and they just had clarity, string definition, mid punch and not a silly amount of bottom end. they just blew me away. Now, I'm loving the neck where as a humbucker neck i've always hated. strat pick up good, but P90 is perfect. so I'm sold on P90's for both pick ups.
They are the missing link
Grand !
A much better overall sound. Kind of hifi as opposed to somewhat lacklustre stock pups. Mr Glynns pups have more high end, which works well for humbuckers. Maybe a bit like a P90 sound wise, without the hum
what a nice way to explain how it works.... thank you sm
Thank you.
To the point, and precise! If there is a better video out there, I'd like to see it done! I wish I could give it more than one thumbs up!
Thanks for your kind words. I just looked at the video again, Sam is no longer with us so great to see him.
@@MrGlynsPickups I am so sorry to hear of his passing. My sincerest condolences.

It isn't though I do know LLansteffan (I grew up in Swansea). It's Muriwai in New Zealand.
@@MrGlynsPickups aye, tidy mun...
Good demo. I see lots of comments about lower resistance being "warmer". The missing bit to the evaluation IMO is to also show the effect of the tone control. My theory is that the 1M "brighter" volume pot can sound a lot like a 500K or 250K if you roll off the tone a bit. Which seems to me like the 1M pot gives more sonic landscape to play with.
I'm sure you could achieve that with a bit of experimenting with capacitor/tone pot values. Even just turning the volume control down to around 7 or 8 will do it. For such a simple little circuit there are so many variations and so many ways of using it.
One of the best explanation and finally I got to understand the use of the treble bleed. My only issue that if someone on the beach saw that drawing Im sure it would not associate that with a treble bleed circuit:p
Hello there Mr Glen-im a session player in nyc. How did this get only 2 comments?!? That shit sounds killer. I was thinkin about getting a cheap sg-if I do, I’m gettin Black Sands. These SMOKE every humbucker size p90 on UA-cam…”It’s Late” thought I was the only one who plays that! Haha. 2 AC30’s w blues, & an old 80’s hardwired MXR Stereo chorus , try that on its late…Great sounds my man-your pickups are spectacular…
Thanks Alan, good of you to take the time to write. Looking forward to sending some over to you.
Heya Glyn-I’m a pickup tone stickler-like you…I have Monty’s PAF’s in the neck, & JM Rolph just made me 2 bridge humbuckers for my LP & 335. I have friends who live p90’s too…FYI. I had Throbak bridge humbuckers. Not at all like a real PAF. Nasal, like a cocked wah…What year is that 335 in the video? Repro, but when?
@@alanschwartz4047 Hi, it's not my guitar or me playing it. It belongs to Warren Mendonsa - check out this rather cool little YT series. He talks about it in this episode: ua-cam.com/video/6I_vM959YsA/v-deo.html
Jazz players need a neck pickup with clarity.
@@jazzjames Everyone does.
Thanks Glyn. I really like learning about pickups and you explain so well. LOL, I'm not saying take on teaching as a career as I REALLY like your pickups too. Cheers.
Thanks Mate. I did teach guitar making/repair in a UK college for a couple of years back in the '90's.
That sounds like a great pickup! Cheers Glyn. (I don't need another guitar ... I don't need another guitar ... I don't need another guitar ... I don't need another guitar ...)
Excellent stuff man; thank you!!!
This is only a Strat issue? Or single coil issue or can we apply this to all pickups?
All magnetic pickups to a greater or lesser extent. It's less with humbuckers, they have one north and one south coil.
This video should be at the top for answering the question of what a treble bleed is and does. Thank you!
Thanks, I do try and keep it to the point.
This is great! For years, I've known that higher isn't always better. Plus magnet type has a little influence. In my Yamaha, they're ceramic. I've set my pickups to "the middle ground," and they've done well. I've also tried the "raising higher strings vs lower strings" comparison. This starts to get nit-picky, but I always want to see what my gear is and isn't capable of. For the record, it gets interesting results, and is totally a "taste" thing - but it's well worth trying.
I completely agree, the trick is to get it right for you then stop fiddling - I struggle with that last part.
The higher you go the brighter , opposite applies . Caps are opposite of that principle
This video is demonstrating the sound of different value pots.
Just installed a second humbucker in my homemade guitar and discovered that the second pickup was out of phase with the first because the common channel was very thin and much lower volume. But because of UA-cam, I simply reversed the wiring of one of the pickups and it worked perfectly.
Really pleased to have been some help.
I tried 1M pots in my LP and liked what I heard. The deal breaker was the pot's taper. I went back to the 500k pots.
Interesting, everything makes a difference.
as usual...the presenter is playing to show off his ability and not to illustrate the video
Thanks Mate, I'll try and play badly next time.
Not at all . Where do you get this ? Do people just have not so good ears ?
that s weird... humbuckers should have coils and magnets in opposite directions...the phase should nt be the same...otherwise there wont be noise cancelation
Yes, you're right. Both the coils and the magnet are in opposite directions. The coils are wired out of phase with each other to cancel hum. So they're electrically out of phase. One coil is magnetically North and the other South so they're also magnetically out of phase too. So they're out of phase twice, therefore back in phase. So the finished pickup is in phase but remaining electrically out of phase so the hum is cancelled. Clever stuff eh. Here's another explanation: ua-cam.com/video/YOX4WrjmKdo/v-deo.html
Ok @mrglyns pickups so how am i going to fit these in my gretsch which has broadtrons (which suck) have you got access to converse mounts. Or do you know where i can get them in new Zealand
You've definitely got it backwards. Its more dynamic and less compressed with the pickups lower/further away from the strings, and less dynamic/more compressed when higher/closer to the strings. Your demonstration kinda sucked because you started off picking fairly hard in the beginning of both examples, which didnt leave much room to show the difference in dynamics. But despite that, it still is pretty audible that it was more dynamic with the pickups lower/further from string. I even grabbed a good pair of headphones and re-listened to make sure. Then i was curious if maybe it was just you being inconsistent with your attack, so i did a little research. No where can i find anyone saying its more dynamic and less compressed with the pickups closer. And from my own experience as well, guitar pickups have always been more dynamic further away. 🤔
Yeah but he was using a compressor pedal turned on the whole time so how do you explain that?
I've read magnetic field strength varies by cube of distance. So a very small change in distance will be a very large change in magnetic field strength.
Excellent video. Please, I ask you to answer a few questions. When unrolling the wire, isn't it necessary to heat it a little with a heat gun so that the wax melts and it can be done more easily?. If a Stratocaster pickup with heavy formvar 42awg wire has a resistance of 5.8k and by unwinding the wire I manage to get the resistance to 5.6k, will the change in tone be noticeable?. Thank you very much for answering.
You've made it easy to understand. Thanks, nice and short as well. Cheers from the Sunny Coast of Queensland in Australia!!
Thanks Les.
Gonna order the set pretty soon!
Great vid! I just saw a Peter Green LP setup...all this time I thought they MUST be LEVEL!

Awesome vid Glyn!
Good video Glyn, thanks for sharing. I'm one of the people who're interested in this sort of thing (obviously I guess). Cheers.
Very cool. Interesting that they were already rewound but not period correct. I guess that’s something that happened a lot in the 80’s and 90’s but now people want vintage spec, and vintage value. Ha
Exactly. For most of its life this was just an old guitar not some kind of museum artifact. The pickups stopped working, the client wanted them re-wound and a bit hotter... fair enough that a repairer in the past wound them that way. Hopefully the guitar will get to visit a lot of pubs and continue to get played hard but I doubt that will happen. Thanks for watching Mate.
This was brilliant. Such interesting discussion and technical too!
the clear view i am most intrigued by and pining to get into my baritone….❤
You’re a wizard Glyn! I love P90’s too. Fatter than single coils but not a humbucker and still push the front of an amp well
