The Ethics of Book Translations (Writing Journal #89)
Переглядів 4,6 тис.21 годину тому
Hi everyone. This is Journal 89. I talk about book translations. And whether we should be doing it. This seems a particularly important issue as A.I. systems will soon put translators out of work, making it even easier to do. At some point, we have to question the ethics of our actions (just because we can doesn't mean we should). My book can be purchased here: www.amazon.com/dp/0991314514 Or y...

Hi everyone. I just ramble here. For 18 minutes, I ramble. Mostly about trolls. Nonely about politics. Although I'm sure that nonely will mostly be ignored. Because there's tendency among the internet's residents to politicize everything. Especially utterly unpolitical things. Those get politicized the hardest. Anyway...I invite you to set aside any expectations and join me. Also, Aaron Lum dre...

Hi everyone. This is Journal 88. I talk about my problem with "songs" in fantasy literature. And I write and play a song for my own book (The Crown and the Caged God, Book 1, Part 2). Then I play it again, but better. And then Aaron Lum does a version... which is even better. Way even better. Hi everyone. This is a sequel to the conversation Marie and I had recently. The one where we discussed books. Marie mentioned Rothfuss, Darwin, Tolkien, and Sedaris. Thank you!!!
Thank YOU for caring.
Get it bro!! Art is life! Keep creating!!
Thanks Fro. Someday, I'll see you again. I can't believe how many years it's been.
@courtneyjensen It has been a long time. It is crazy to think about. Hope I do get to see you again someday. Cool to see you creating and doing well!!
❤❤❤❤😮😮😮😮
Thank you. Kind emojis in your direction, too.
Hi, I wonder if you have a family in Denmark because you are identical to a Danish man thật I know. His family name is Jensen.
I'm pretty sure I have some ancestry 'round those parts. Go back enough generations and we probably share a great, great, great, great womb. Also: I receive this as a compliment based on the one Danish person I've known. Years and years (and years) ago, I was a baseball coach at a high school in Oregon. And Fred was an exchange student from Denmark. And he was an amazing kid. Not amazing at baseball... because he'd never played before. But amazing at everything more important than that.
Hi everyone. In the slideshow where you can see Lum and me painting... that was Lum's 27th birthday. It's the night we finished the painting. One of my favorite days. He had the wisdom to take a few pictures of us that night -- in addition to the painting -- realizing someday, we might want to look back on our time together as opposed to the product of it. I mean... we could have kept working on that canvas for months. We had a thousand more ideas of things to put on the bookshelf. But we ran out of time. So we finished it up in the wee hours of the night. Then we started another one (the smaller one). Which we could keep. But then I moved across the country and Lum moved across the world. Anyway, if you want some musical inspiration for your own art projects, you can find Lum's music projects (lots of them) at aaronlum.com
Hi everyone. Here's the conversation with Marie that I'm sequel-ing: ua-cam.com/video/gzP-QmJ-Jb0/v-deo.html Also, I meant Canterville Ghost. Not Canterbury. Like Canterbury Tales. Which was hugely influential to the English language... but not really to me. Not directly, anyway. I tried to read it a few times. Never managed to finish it. So I got the audiobook. And finished it inattentively. CanterVILLE Ghost, though. I've finished that one attentively several times. Although it's probably my least favorite Wilde work. Okay. That's all. I hope you're enjoying some old, wonderful thing on your shelf as I write this.
This is a great message. Ignoring trolls is the best approach. Also, the road rage hand gestures are hilarious. Paints the perfect picture.
That grateful hand emoji at you. And also, a supinated road rage karate chop hand emoji, but not at you. But mostly: heart emojis. At you.
“CORNER!” and, “BEHIND!” Are restaurant terms I still use. 😅
I think everyone should work in a restaurant. At some point. As a rite of passage. To be a grown-up. I guess it doesn't have to be a restaurant. Any fast-paced customer service job would probably teach the same lessons. These lessons: life is hard, let's be kind to each other.
This was a refreshing watch, and I look forward to future uploads. Greetings from Brittany!
Thank you. When I got out of bed this morning, your comment functioned as a mood enhancer. I hope you've had some kind soul lift your day as well.
Follow up: I DID NOT finish Cats Cradle during my semester break. 😂
Following up on my pledge to discuss additional books: give me a couple of weeks. I'll get to it. Soon-ish. It's on my agenda. But not at the tippy top of it.
Sending Love and Support Here watching from Hongkong 🇭🇰
Thank you. I appreciate that. Also: I love your city. I've only been there once: I got a room in Mirador in 2007... which is now so long ago. Some of my favorite memories are from that trip though.
I'm from hk too
Greetings from California. Someday, I'll be back in HK. I've wanted to return since the day I left.
@@courtneyjensen the food there is so good! Especially egg waffles!
@@CatChesterBrawlStarsAndRoblox I agree. I never had egg waffles specifically, but everything I do remember eating there was worth remembering all these years later.
Hi everyone. First, thanks for watching. Second, here's the writing lecture I referenced in the video: ua-cam.com/video/iV4ljIAgceo/v-deo.html If you go to the last chapter in that video, I list my top 10 fantasy stories... and explain them a bit. Okay, I hope you're sleeping better than I am.
Very cool😁
Thank you. I appreciate that. The rest of the book is (I hope) just as very cool. But, of course, I'm biased. Again: thank you.
You had me at The Never Ending Story 💜💜💜🔥🔥🔥
That song has been stuck in my head since the 80s.
Thank you so much for the for the shout out in your video. You guys were awesome neighbors. I hope we see you again.
Thank YOU so much for helping us rookies play the game. p.s., I saw those tables you make. On your website. When Marie and I finally get out of CA and back to OR (and settled somewhere permanent), we'll be buying one.
I’m only a third in, and it’s one of my absolute favorite books I’ve ever read! It feels so special, and makes me want to just sit at a coffee shop and just lose myself in the world
Today wasn't filled with happiness. Until this comment. Thank you. I can stop moping now and get to work. I appreciate this. And you.
@@courtneyjensen I’m glad you saw this! I’m so excited for the whole story! Sorry you’re not having a great day. But just know I’ve already had several people ask about the book and seem very interested in it, more than usual for when strangers see me reading in public. Especially my doctor, she seemed fascinated and likes fantasy so she took a picture of it. I believe your series will be very very well received by those that appreciate your thoughtful style and passionately crafted world, and I’m glad to be an early and enthusiastic fan :)
My appreciation continues. Also, if your doctor is nearby, I hope that doesn't imply a need. (I know a little something about need.) If there is a need, at least you seem to have found a good one. (I know a little something about the scarcity of good ones.) Okay, I hope someone else has lifted your spirits in the way you lifted mine--
Hi everyone. First: thanks for watching. Second: if you want to know all my exact amounts and durations of everything, I'm happy to share. Third: my book is here: www.amazon.com/dp/0991314514 Lastly: I hope your ink-making efforts don't stain your hands forever and ever. Unless that's the exact tattoo you always wanted.

Hi everyone. Here's the journal entry I'm referencing: ua-cam.com/video/pomGzf4EvJM/v-deo.html and here's the book I'm waving around at the beginning of the video (and again less than a minute later): www.amazon.com/dp/0991314514 Okay, whatever music you have in the queue, I hope it's Zwan-like in its humanity and intimacy.
Wowsers! A courageous mindset. You continue to nurture your gift. But I see my work with a value that will, hopefully, see the fruits of my labour and will reap what I sow.
I very (very, very) much hope that for you. The world needs art. In writing. In painting. In music. In real human expression. And it's so (so, so) much effort. So, I hope a lot of reaping happens to you and everyone who does the heavy sowing. Lengthy-winded way of saying: good luck :-)
not my thing but its cool u made it
Thank you. I appreciate the positive tone here. 99% of life's media isn't my thing, but, as you say, I'm glad they made it. The world is running out of people with that outlook. Thanks for being counted among those kind souls.
@@courtneyjensenim too broke to get ur book but ur reply was so uplifting and honest that i wouldve bought it if i could
@@gerogeponkeby Again: you're one of the good ones. I'm glad you exist. Also: I would feel guilty if you spent food money on my book when the style or themes (or whatever else) didn't connect with you. Broke is a state I am well acquainted with. Old besties, broke and me. Not today, but historically. So.... that's my "please don't buy it" pitch. But your positivity (which seems increasingly rare these days) has been a mood enhancer for the morning. Thank you--
Hi I’m trying to write a book too and let me tell you I have been writing mine for five years and I’m still going through the firing and illustration process I can wait to read your book Good luck :)
Thank you. It's such an enormous, life-consuming investment, isn't it? Worth it, but thousands (and thousands) of hours of work. And some more thousands after that. When yours is all done, post a link somewhere on one of my videos. In the meantime, good luck to you as well :-).
Wow!
Thank you. :-)

What is that contraption behind you?
Good morning. My phone booth? My acquisition is a long story. I tell a medium-length version of it here: ua-cam.com/video/4DhZUY_EyDw/v-deo.html (at 3:13). Okay... I hope you enjoy the rest of your morning. And weekend. And month. And life.
@@courtneyjensen 🙏🏻
The tired, outdated iPad is a good metaphor for CFS/ME. I have to weigh up what is more important for me to do and allow myself rest beforehand and respite afterwards. It might just be a trip to the Drs but I’ll pay for it later. I spend the majority of my day/night in bed. The amount of ‘events’ I’ve missed because of Chronic Fatigue is insane; my best friend’s funeral memorial, weddings, christenings, theatre trips, concerts, appointments. Anything and everything has its toll. I have other health complications, many, which all have additional constraints. I think my CFS is a byproduct of some of these illnesses - depression, anxiety, CPTSD, under active thyroid, fibromyalgia, high BP, arrhythmia and tachycardia, fatty liver, asthma, pre diabetes and CKD. Which all leave me in a Catch 22 scenario… I can’t exercise efficiently as I have disc degeneration and sciatica, heart and BP problems and CFS, yet, exercise would provide me with serotonin, weight loss and help my battle with my MH. The amount of medication I’m on is actually crazy and they all have side effects too. People don’t empathise with invisible disability. You’re seen as a malingerer or it’s taken personally. The amount of referrals I’ve had to cancel because of my CFS is crazy, it turns into groundhogs day. It also affects smaller matters such as paperwork and telephone calls… should be easy right? But no. If I get out of bed, clean a little, let the dogs out and make a phone call then I’ve had a good day, I won’t have got washed and dressed tho because that is a task in itself.
I share many of the ailments and all of the sentiments. Especially about people's perceptions. Every time I record one of these, I have to spend the rest of the day in bed. And the next day, I'm operating at 70%. (So I end up spending pretty much that whole day in bed too.) You know the feeling. Most people don't. So they call it things like "malingering" as opposed to suffering. Or they perceive one's suffering as "self-centered"... even though they (we) are doing the best we can. I'm gradually learning how to ignore people's hostility. Not excuse it, though. Because imagine the social backlash they would experience if they were berating someone with a condition people widely understood, like Down syndrome or Alzheimer's. Or telling someone in a wheelchair they were malingering and unwilling to work because their chair couldn't access the workplace. That's the same thing. Insulting people with disabilities who are doing everything they can with the resources they have. Society just hasn't reached a point where that's understood. Anyway............ this is me sending understanding your way. Not understanding for EVERYTHING that you've been through (and continue to endure), but parts of it.
Thank-you and vice versa 😊 I know we all have our crosses to bear but some days I feel like mine is extra heavy …. 🤔 or is that the CFS 😂 I’ve subscribed and liked, so I will get your new uploads. Wishing you well with your channel, there is definitely a demand for this kind of content ✌🏻💖
I looked at your UA-cam play list. A soul is kindred here. I have concert shirts of a lot of those bands. From years ago. I'm not healthy enough to go to concerts anymore. At least not without being bedridden and braindead for a week. I've done some research on CFS-ME -- like this: journals.lww.com/acsm-msse/fulltext/2023/09001/patients_with_myalgic_encephalomyelitis_have.353.aspx (and one on Lyme and one on fibromyalgia) -- but studying problems I have (ME and fibromyalgia, but not lyme) just exacerbates my anxiety about it. Anyway.... I know the feeling of bearing unfair cross weight. We have a lot of overlapping problems. Beyond the crippling fatigue. I'll try to get some more "in sickness" videos recorded. Haven't done one in a little while. For the most part, they just offend people who work in healthcare. And people who don't understand illness. So I haven't been motivated lately. But I appreciate the encouragement.
Bramante’s weapon would be a BodyBlade. Working those eternal rotators while slaying Baxter.
More dangerous than Shake Weight, definitely.
The future human internet will be called: SapieNet.
I think we have a winner. Even though it's the first entry. I don't think another contestant can top it.

Journal 48 (Generative A.I. vs. the Human Writer): ua-cam.com/video/pi2NujdxmXU/v-deo.html Journal 49 (Generative A.I. and the Atrophy of Imagination): ua-cam.com/video/FH-rquZfP18/v-deo.html Journal 50 (On Hope Amid A.G.I.): ua-cam.com/video/L_hjhHzV40Y/v-deo.html Journal 51 (The Art of Posing: A.I. and Human Appropriation): ua-cam.com/video/Pt3_SbQij4A/v-deo.html Journal 52 (The Limb Length of A.I.): ua-cam.com/video/HKG6_J8zvhY/v-deo.html Journal 53 (“Artificial” “Intelligence” and the March of Progress): ua-cam.com/video/BAVwGoVvxmo/v-deo.html In Journal 76 (Child Protagonists in Fantasy Literature), I talked about being 100% human. But I didn’t say much else about AI. This: ua-cam.com/video/ELVStWtt3QA/v-deo.html And in Journal 77 (On Book Reviews), I talk a lot more about AI in the post-journal chat: ua-cam.com/video/zH_SAYzYFac/v-deo.html And, of course, this one. And Part 2 is coming... Okay, I hope things at you. Good things. Human things, though. All human things.
Great segment
Thank you. I hope I'm not describing circumstances you've also had. Rather than sharing my frustration, I hope you just enjoyed the narrative. BUT.... if you do find yourself starring in a similar (untelevised) reality show, I'm sorry. And know that you have a similarly frustrated me in your community.
Dude I just wanna give you a big hug for some reason 😅 you seem like such a wholesome person 💙 I can listen to you talk all day 😄
Thank you. I really appreciate that. Life is often weird and bad, and the only remedy seems to be healthy communities. So (again), I appreciate you saying that.
p.s., Here's an e-hug.
Mike Tyson's foster mother was a Ukrainian from Canada and moved to the US she even had to change her surname to fit in . Mike always remembered that foster mother and it was she who introduced to Ukrainian food . The Klitschko brothers got to know him and Mike visited Kyiv a number of times. Ukraine has a Champion heavyweight boxer Usyk . The American Ukrainian Jack Palance was a heavyweight boxer during the 1940s lost to Joe Bagsi through a TKO in that fight Jack suffered a punch to his throat . Then Hollywood embraced Jack Palance twice nominated for Oscars until he won in 1992 doing those famous one arm push ups .
You know your boxing (and boxing adjacent) trivia. Thanks for sharing, that was interesting.
If this fight goes ahead I'm very very concerned for Mike.
@@JasonAtlas It's a little outrageous. The fight is. (For reasons I talk about in the lecture.) We all just want Tyson preserved in time as the greatest human to have ever punched another human. Or at least that's what my nostalgia wants. But this fight isn't gong to be that. Still... I hope he wins.
?
Is there a question that precedes your question mark? Happy to answer.
@@courtneyjensen I’m just wondering how you came up with this story, any inspirations?
@@Tugusuki Thanks for asking. I've been working on it (the whole 5-book series) for well over a decade. The inspirations have changed over the years... but real experiences are the foundation. My work as a professor, my trips to Africa, people I've met along the way. In a sense, it's a memoir nourishing a fantasy world. Again: thanks for asking.
Isn’t it because of the sun and how we orbit around it. Also how we spin. And seasons are because of the sun too
Yup. :-). I'm just saying it could be done so much better. Months and weeks especially. Those are sort of a mess. But if you look at the dates of the events, and how they nuzzle into the calendar, it's really improvable.
