    Hey Bob, toffe video zeg! Mijn vriend en ik willen komende april zo'n beetje dezelfde roadtrip doen als jullie, en ik vroeg me af of jullie alle campings van te voren hadden geboekt? En waren er veel campings gesloten (of kan je daar dan alsnog staan)? Als ik bijvoorbeeld Wawona Campground check, zie ik dat deze in april niet open is. Het lijkt me het leukst om op de bonnefooi te gaan en te zien waar we uitkomen, is dat een beetje mogelijk denk je? Groetjes!

    • @bobvandermeij6685
      @bobvandermeij6685 4 роки тому

      Hey Eva, dat zijn goede vooruitzichten, heel veel plezier alvast! Wat betreft het reserveren van campings, wij hadden inderdaad alles op voorhand vastgelegd. Een hele bewuste keuze overigens. Op de bonnefooi reizen heeft ook zeker z’n charmes, maar door alles vooraf vast te leggen weet je in ieder geval wel zeker dat je midden in de parken kan overnachten (en dát wil je!). Daarnaast heeft op de bonnefooi gaan m.i. als groot nadeel dat je tijdens je reis veel tijd (en wellicht ‘stress’) kwijt bent aan het opzoeken/bellen van campings om te horen of ze nog een plekje hebben. Wanneer je alles reserveert hoef je je daar niet druk over te maken en kan je de hele dag genieten zonder steeds bezig te zijn met waar je vanavond weer heen moet rijden. Daarbij komt dat je, juist omdat alles in principe al vast ligt, je je heel goed kan inlezen en op voorhand helemaal kan uitstippelen wát je precies wáár gaat doen, daarmee rekening houdend met wat/wel niet in je planning past. Maar ieder zijn keus natuurlijk ;). Wawona Campground was in ons geval wél open, maar wij waren er dan ook pas in de laatste week van april. Weet wel dat wij Wawona twee maanden op voorhand hebben geboekt en dat dat toen de allerlaatste plek was, de campings midden in het valley (Upper/Lower Pines etc.) waren zelfs al ruim daarvoor helemaal vol! Zeker in Yosemite kan het geen kwaad om op voorhand te reserveren wil je enigszins in de buurt van de valley zitten, zelfs in April is het daar namelijk al ontzettend druk. Anders moet je al snel uitwijken naar campings buiten de parkgrenzen en dan ben je per dag al snel 2 à 3 uur kwijt met rijden naar de valley en weer terug naar de camping. Tijd die je anders in het park zelf kan spenderen! Yosemite is qua drukte wellicht extreem (net als de Grand Canyon), maar ook op alle andere campings waar wij stonden was het toch al wel aardig druk. Zeker in de weekenden willen de locals er ook nog wel eens op uit trekken en dan kunnen zeker de natuurcampings in de parken zelf al snel vol lopen. Wij hebben vooraf ook nog een heel ‘roadbook’ geschreven met de routes/tijden/locaties/etc., mocht je interesse hebben kan ik die altijd wel een keertje mailen :). Ps. Afgelopen september zijn we wéér terug gegaan naar het zuidwesten maar toen hebben we een iets andere route gedaan. Dus voor het geval je nóg meer inspiratie zoekt: ua-cam.com/video/bxzlt6fNHTQ/v-deo.html

    Thanks for that amazing video ! 3 months to go before our first RV road trip. So excited but also very nervous ! Dumb question : did you buy some extra stuff for the RV such as levelers or extra hoses or other accessories ?! I don't really know what is actually provided by the renter and don't want to miss a crucial thing. Thanks for your help :)

    • @bobvandermeij6685
      @bobvandermeij6685 5 років тому

      Hey Elodie, There's no such thing as a dumb question, we were going through exactly the same over a year ago ;). We didn't really buy extra RV-related items, the technical equipment that is provided by default should get you pretty much everywhere unless you've special needs. Hoses and electrical wires are all included in the standard kit. The same goes for pots, pans cutlery, plates, cups, a tea kettle and bedlinen, a sleeping bag and towels if you've selected the vehicle provisioning kit ($110,-) and personal kits ($60 p/p) during reservation respectively. Obviously you could get all these things yourself at a nearby Walmart but that will hardly be any less costly and consume considerable time that you could've spent on the road instead. We only bought a set of camping chairs (can also be rented at Cruise America for $10) and a coffee maker but we relied on the provided kit(s) for anything else. Ps. Have fun on your road trip by the way, those 3 months will be gone before you know it! Where will you be heading? We've just booked our trip for coming September, we'll be heading back to the Southwest for a four week initiary but this time driving the slightly larger C25.

      @bobvandermeij6685 5 років тому

      @@elospace We didn't actually, as we never really required to level it. Most campgrounds that we came across, commercial and governmental alike, provided largely paved/hardened sites that were strictly level or very slightly graded at most. We never witnessed a situation that required us to install additional leveling equipment, just driving back and forth a few times while playing around with the steering wheel will get you on the 'sweet-spot' in no time. FYI during the booking process of campgrounds in National Parks (through recreation.gov) the website will give additional information on the surface type and degree of leveling/grading for each individual site on the campground. This allows you to ensure an adequate site beforehand.

    So many coincidences... I am planning a trip in April 2019, planning to rent a C19 from CruiseAmerica, and planning to visit many of the places you visited on your trip (Las Vegas, Valley of Fire, Zion National Park, Grand Canyon National Park, plus others that you did not visit). The video was fun, and your information in the comments has been very helpful. In another post you said you planned for no more than two days between stops with hookups. Did you ever use up all of the fresh water in your tank? Or did you ever fill the black water tank? How did you compute 10 miles per gallon? I want to have a rough idea of my own fuel costs, just want to make sure there is no mixup in methods or conversion from Metric to Imperial.

    • @bobvandermeij6685
      @bobvandermeij6685 6 років тому

      Hey there Will, that's a great coincidence indeed. I'm sure you'll have a blast! Very curious to hear what other places you'll be visiting though? As for the fresh water supply in between hookups I'm not entirely sure, as it has been a while, but I'm quiet sure we deed indeed run out of fresh water on our second day in Yosemite. Regardless of us deliberately being very careful with the usage thereof and exclusively using the camping showers, for example, instead. Luckily we always kept a couple of gallons of $1 fresh water tanks from Wal-Mart, solely as a backup, in our storage compartment throughout our trip. For this reason I'd recommended anyone to do the same, just to be sure. The situation with respect to the black water tank is a bit more complicated as it seems our indoor monitor panel indicating tank levels was slightly broken. At times it would show a completely full black tank even after dumping or for fresh water even though we'd already used quiet a bit. That being said I reckon we never completely filled it, even during prolonged periods without hookups. Most campgrounds, National Parks and other visiting areas are well equipped with respect to restrooms so it's relatively easy to keep the usage of the RV's toilet to a minimum. The same goes for taking a shower and potentially maxing out the gray tank, provided your campground(s) come with a shower facility. We computed the MPG by taking a photograph of the indicated total mileage on our dashboard (in miles) right before we left the rental center and once more when we returned the RV three weeks later. We also kept all receipts (in gallons) of our refueling endeavours so calculting the MPG was quiet straightforward. During our trip we've met and talked with various other tourists driving a C19 of Cruise America and all were getting approximately 9-11 MPG, so I'd say our estimate is rather accurate. Just try to use the cruise/speed control as much as you can, likewise you may want to slightly lower your speed on very wind days in order to minimize fuel loss. Have a safe trip!

      @bobvandermeij6685 6 років тому

      No major issues except for a flat tire while at Grand Canyon NP, nothing that couldn't be solved though. We've been on the road for a total of 17 days. We picked up the RV in SFO on April 7th and got back in SFO on April 22nd. After spending a final (non-driving) day in the city on the 23rd we returned the RV early in the morning on April 24th. Admittingly, we have covered quiet some ground within a relatively short period of time. If you fancy some more relaxation time in between I'd advice to add a couple of days. That being said I'd personally do the exact same thing any other time. Safe travels!

    • @bobvandermeij6685
      @bobvandermeij6685 6 років тому

      Hi Romina, We booked all campgrounds upfront, partially because some near the National Parks fill up rather quick (even during the off season). You'll also pass through various regions with poor or no cellphone/internet reception, sometimes disallowing you to call campgrounds to make a reservation along the way. To make sure we were fine and to prevent surprises we decided to get everything booked before our visit. Sure, booking everything in advance has the downside that you're left with little flexibility, but that was all fine for us. Given our relatively short timeframe and our wish to cover as much ground as reasonably possible we had everything planned very precisely. Concerning websites for campgrounds you can simply use Google Maps and search for 'campground + destination'. This should give you multiple results, from Google Maps onwards you are easily forwarded to the websites of a selected campground. All official government campgrounds within the Nat. Parks can be booked through www.recreation.gov. These are generally cheaper than commercial campgrounds but often come with less amenities such as hookups. Sites on these governmental campgrounds may be booked up to six month ahead of arrival, but make sure to be in time as they are very popular and available sites decrease every day!

    Im just about to rent a CA 19G then a 25ft from October 3rd from Seattle around Washington and Oregon. Thanks for the breakdown of the fuel charges etc. Im renting the two models for 2 weeks each, before buying one for my year long USA road trip. So how was the 19G to drive, park and was it comfortable enough for two people? How were the amenities in the RV? Ive never driven an RV before, do you have any tips about the RV you can give me? thanks in advance, Marilyn

    • @bobvandermeij6685
      @bobvandermeij6685 6 років тому

      Hey there Marilyn, awesome you'll be doing a year long roadtrip! As far as our liking of the C19 is concerned I'd say perspective is crucial. Having never driven an RV ourselves, or anything bigger than a regular European sedan for that matter, the C19 is obviously huge! It doesn't fall anything short of a truck, or at least compared to what we are used to driving back home. Likewise we were obviously slightly anxious navigating the C19 through small towns and downtown LA during the first two days, but that easied off was we headed inland. Driving over highways and interstates is very relaxing thanks to their sheer size, relatively little amount of traffic and the Keep-Your-Lane principle. Parking is no issue either as the C19 just fits in any regular parking spot. But then again the C19’s footprint is factually not much larger than some American SUVs. Just try to find an open parking spot that has no parked cars on either side as its turning circle may be problematic. We found the C19 provided sufficient space and amenities for the two of us. The sleeping compartment is not particularly wide but will fit two persons just fine. Please note that the overhead space is limited due to its position above the driver cabin. The overhead spacing in the C25 is obviously much larger, but the bed’s width is about the same I believe. In short then I’d take the C19 over the bigger C25 and C30 any day. It suffices for two people just fine, fits in any regular parking spot and has a significantly better fuel economy. Also take note that some scenic routes in National Parks may be prohibited for larger vehicles (forcing you to take a shuttle bus) although these are still drivable with the C19 as the limits are often set at 20ft or 25ft. At last some tips. Make sure you have carefully read the user manual prior to picking up the RV. There’s a lot to know and it greatly benefits the overall joy when you are familiar with how things work. Studying the manual prior to pickup also allows you to ask for clarification about items you didn’t initially understand at the rental station. The most tricky part for us, however, was to decide how long we could go without any sort of hookup. Having no prior experience in an RV we simply guessed two days was the max, although some would say longer durations are easily doable. Hence why we stipulated the entire route beforehand and booked all campgrounds along the way. This allowed us to carefully plan when we could fill-up and empty our tanks, besides telling us at what times we had to be more careful with our water consumption. Also make sure to carry along multiple gallons of fresh water from any local grocery store, this is a great backup in case you empty your fresh water tanks earlier than planned. Safe travels!

    • @marilyngould390
      @marilyngould390 6 років тому

      Thanks Bob for all your tips and information, its really helpful. Theres not a lot about the 19G on here. Im getting nervous because I pick it up on Wednesday 3rd Oct, I fly from France on Tuesday! Good point about the manual, I have looked through it some months ago but will refresh my memory while I am at the airport. :-) After researching the net for over a year Ill probably try the two day rule first until I get used to boondocking etc. Ive only booked the first 4 nights at this stage around the Washington Olympic Peninsula, then Im off down the Oregon coast, I believe its not so busy this time of year. Sorry not to reply earlier, I had sold my bed and breakfast in France a couple of weeks ago, so between packing and preparing to move from Europe its been a busy time and I havent had internet regularly either. Kind regards, Marilyn

      It's been a lifelong dream of mine to do a roadtrip across the USA. Getting away from my comfort zone for a while, leave bad habits behind and enjoy my life in its purest and simplest form. I don't know what it takes to do it, expenses obviously being the biggest concern, courage being next. But hopefully one day I'll have it figured out. Enjoy your trip and best of luck! Cheers.

    • @bobvandermeij6685
      @bobvandermeij6685 5 років тому

      @@mikerelvas Miguel for all that it's worth I'd like to stress it is "just" a roadtrip. Please don't make it bigger than it is as this may prevent you from ever doing it, and that would be really unfortunate. Although a truly great experience that I certainly will never forget it is just a holiday like any other, except you'll spend it slightly further away from home and will likely see more places compared to a more traditional 3-week camping or hotel holiday in a more nearby country. As far as costs and budget go there's plenty of options to save money, a roadtrip across the USA doesn't necessarily have to be THAT expensive. Speaking for ourselves I dare to say the total costs for our roadtrip hardly exceed the amount that we would normally spend on a three week camping vacation in Europe. Sure the plane tickets cost alot (but booking early helps massively!) but so does driving all the way to southern Europe (in our case). But once you're there costs are pretty acceptable. Groceries are fairly priced and both campsites and hotels aren't too expensive either, probably even cheaper compared to what we're used to elsewhere. Likewise gas prices are a joke (again compared to what we're used to), if only the American vehicles weren't so thirsty ;). Of course the concept of what is considered expensive or cheap is very dependent on your personal references and what you are used to. That being said I reckon courage may be a more prominent concern but then again I'd like to advice you to not make it any bigger than it is. Roadtripping across the USA is loads of fun and relatively straightforward, I'd say everyone would be able to plan and execute such a trip with fair ease. Just try to read up people's initiaries, watch videos and try to get in touch with people that have done such a trip before. That should get rid of most barriers and set you up for a great experience in the long term!

    • @mikerelvas

      @@bobvandermeij6685 I guess I make it such a disproportionally big deal due to the fact that traveling abroad is unknown territory for me. I only traveled to Algeria once and it was a work related trip, so I didn't take part in the planning or the costs. And the fact that I dream of doing this since I was a little kid probably also has an effect on how big of a deal I make it seem to me. Ever since I made that previous comment I did some research on roadtrips across the USA. I searched for the motorhomes all the way down to the different itineraries people took and documented. Now added to that, your point of view really put things into a better perspective for me and that's why I left that comment, in hope that I'd get an insightful answer from someone who knows best. Currently it's hard to do any of this as I'm still studying. Time and budget are a concern, but hopefully when I finish I can take some time off and get it figured out. Thank you so much for your help! Best wishes from Portugal.

    • @bobvandermeij6685
      @bobvandermeij6685 6 років тому

      Somewhere between $7k and $8k in total, based on 2 people and 18 days during the 'off-season' (April). Will attempt to reconstruct a per-item breakdown tomorrow!

    • @bobvandermeij6685
      @bobvandermeij6685 6 років тому

      Here goes: Airplane tickets: $1360,- RV (incl. insurance, personal kits, unlim. miles): $1860,- Petrol (approx. 2800 miles or 4500 km): $930,- Campsites (17 nights) and Hotels (1 night): $900,- Groceries/ Food/ Drinks: $1250,- Entrance fees/ Fares/ Tours: $700,- Other necessities & souvenirs: $600,- Which makes for a grand total of approximately $7.600. It is worth mentioning that we travelled in April. Rental rates for RVs may increase up to double the price during summer/peak-season. Considering petrol please note we drove the 'smallest' available RV of the fleet (the C-19), managing just over 10 mi/gall (4.5 km/L). If you were to drive the much larger C-30 RV you can expect your fuel economy to drop dramatically to under 4.5 mi/gall (2 km/L). This obviously will have a massive impact on your total spending! Campsites and Hotels may also be slightly more expensive during summer months. They may also be harder to come by in those months, some were even already packed in April! Hence why we booked all campsites/hotels up to two months in advance.
