    This is interesting because if anyone should know about Monk it’s his son, right? The earliest Monk on record was as a member of Coleman Hawkins’ quartet. Blue Note may have been the first to give Monk his own record dates, but Hawkins, universally acknowledged as an all-time great saxophonist and improviser, was the earliest prominent jazz musician who championed Monk as both a pianist and composer and hired him for gigs (sometimes over the objections of club owners, who felt Monk played too “far out”) so the “mystery” of Blue Note recording him is somewhat less mysterious. Also, it’s curious that T. Monk the younger would cite “Evidence” as an example of Monk’s rejection of standard chord progressions since it is based on the harmony of the standard pop tune “Just You, Just Me”- it’s the rhythmic displacement and voicing of the melody of “Evidence” that is unusual and creative. I agree that Monk’s music had an overwhelming influence on what came after, and I love it and listen to it often.

    rollins just described the way to learn something from. its when youre defnintely shaken by anything beyond your save milktoasty mindsets. if its gross it may informs you, and information isnt meant as news, its one part of the two way principle of semiotics: information and redundance.

    There are many covers of Joy Division songs, and some truly amazing. The odd thing is that no matter how interesting the cover sounds it still lacks certain fragments of magic.

    One of the most precious records in my collection. The Saints sound reminded me of The Stooges who they were heavily influenced by by Chris Bailey's distinctive voice along with that ferocious band put there vet own touch on the genre. Henry feels the same way I do about The Saints and I'm stranded as an album.

    In 1948 critic George T. Simon interviewed Thelonious Monk and he criticized other bebop musicians for basing their songs on the chord changes of pre-existing standards. "I like to make up my own chords and melodies," he said. He also said, "My time for fame will come," and predicted that the records he'd just made for Blue Note would help make that happen. They did.

    I remember seeing a deathcore band at a small night club. They were a local band. But holy shit they had skill and talent. I thought it was going to suck ass through a coffee straw. I was clearly wrong. It's true. You hear everything, see everything. Feel everything. While it wasn't a punk band, it was a very unique experience I never had before. Fun as fuck too. Mosh pit was great.

    • @DiamorphineDeath

      @@saraivatoledo1842 Beatles were great; very trendy and "punk" to denounce them, yet if one listen's to Lennon's solo work, Harrison's...and McCarthy's...they were each pop writing studs, and together made music that most likely won't be touched or expressed in that way again. Take Paperback writer, that's a perfect pop song, while having an edge and a counter-cultural tilt..slight distortion, etc. Reminds me of what the jesus and mary chain did, was subversive and transgressive, and yet lifting immensely from the vocal harmony of the beach boys, just laid over walls of dissonance and feedback/noise. Beatles are the fundemental band, but given the choice, I would still rather see Suicide in their prime at CBGB's or Max's, than The Beatles. Lennon's solo work stands out immensely though.

      Really intelligent, eloquent answer ...pretty unexpected tbqh. Why can´t people be more civil like this ? Sorry! Wandering off into my thoughts. Basically agree even though it´s all hindsight (for me ) ,of course ...Rollins says he didn´t touch the record for a few more weeks after that 1st listen ...in my case was decades . Believe it or not I only got into Suicide after having understood much more angular, obtuse ,psychedelic electronic music which at the root would probably not even have existed in their current format had it not been for the former´s existence. Great example of a band like that is Skinny Puppy ...Coil too. Only then did I finally "get it " - by recognizing their sound at the core of everything I was listening to at some point in time (early -mid 90s ). Also ,there is a certain grit, a confrontational side to Suicide which one may argue is also present in The Beatles. Although I understand such view ...simply do not feel it ,if you know what I mean...@@DiamorphineDeath

    • @DiamorphineDeath
      @DiamorphineDeath 4 місяці тому

      @@saraivatoledo1842 Ohhh I completely get that; I think the first time I heard Suicide I was already into that aggressive/in your face choatic vibe. Grew up on punk music, was into modern art, the art world, etc...but Suicide had that visceral quality, even though the music itself was not say, Black Flag, or The Dead Boys. A good album is Nebraska by Springsteen, which carries a similar vibe. That confrontational vibe, which you stated and I agree with fully. Those industrial bands had the same thing, Einstrezen Neubatan is a good example, which I am not going to google how to spell, but along the lines of skinny puppy and those out there bands, throbbing gristle, etc...Suicide had to have been huge. Appreciate the interaction dude

    • @saraivatoledo1842

      Interesting recommendation which I´ll definitely be revisiting soon minus the preconceptions ,bias and contradictory nature (towards what was seemingly popular with others at a certain point ) of my teenage years when I was 1st exposed to Springsteen (mid -late 80s ). Speak of Einsturzende Neubauten ...1st time I watched them (late 80s ) the bouncers were giving earplugs away at the entrance , haha. Same era Young Gods were also quite the wild band on stage. Allegedly still are, just missed them this year cause I got the dates confused ...didn´t miss Clock DVA the day after though ...if there´s a band I feel like recommending you that would be it. You probably know that already being my senior -in case you do not ,their debut "Thirst " is quite the record ...so is their 1st exploration into Kraftwerkian territory, namely "Buried dreams ". Nice interaction indeed. Thanks and Stay safe .@@DiamorphineDeath
