GSMT - The Scots Who Built New York With John Kinnear, Historian Preservation Architect
Historian preservation architect John Kinnear examines the considerable impact of Scottish American architects, artisans and engineers on the development of New York - from the 1700s till today.
Scots of all creative endeavors have been part of the making of New York and America. One of the many artisans, engineers and architects of direct Scottish descent that Mr. Kinnear will focus on is John McComb Jr., an architect who designed numerous New York buildings, including Gracie Mansion, New York City Hall and Hamilton Grange.
Mr. Kinnear will also discuss the engineer David Bates Douglass, who was first chief engineer of the Croton Aqueduct and contributed to the rural design of Green-Wood Cemetery.
He will also feature a number of artisans including the acclaimed furniture maker, Duncan Phyfe, considered to be one of the most influential craftsmen of the 19th Century, whose work is still revered today. (Both John McComb Jr. and Duncan Phyfe were active nineteenth century General Society Members; Mr. McComb was Society President in 1818.)
Mr. Kinnear will also introduce Scots whose intellect and talents would today be called ‘influencers’ because their powers of intellect and artistic talent lent to new directions for society.
The Scots Who Built New York is a legacy project of the American-Scottish Foundation chronicling the impact of Scots and American Scots on the development of New York, launched in 2016 as part of the Landmarks50 celebrations.
John Kinnear practices architecture primarily in New York City, Connecticut, and Dutchess County, with projects throughout the United States and Great Britain. Recent projects include the restoration of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century homes. He is President of the American Friends of the Georgian Group and Chairman of the Architectural Advisory Committee and Village District Consultants in Ridgefield, Connecticut.

Great conference!
How annoying and distracting that doing this presentation there are men jumping up and down supposedly fixing the projector. Sit the “ “ down already!
When will the exterior be done and the scaffolding come down
Are the issues of the interior mechanics any less complex and expensive? Plumbing, electrical, HVAC, elevators.
Absolutely astonishing! Bravo! When is this exterior work anticipated to be completed by?
thermal seasonal efficiency of steam of poor 60 to 80% at best compared to heatpumps and condensing hot water - wipe out any gains of not needing pumps or fans. fan ventilation systems can actually save energy if they have heat recovery.
Great learning.

Interesting
Thank you.
21:28 Take note of the vegetation seen on the floor of what used to be the Coal Storage house. There was likely no remediation of coal residues, yet green nature thrived after the coal was no longer. Proof the environment can self-rehabilitate.
A fascinating dilemma and a valuable discussion. I don't have an understanding of THROUGH RUNNING and don't have the time to listen now. But I am an ex-Manhattan dweller and invested 30 years in a publishing career, there . . . Although now exiled to Central NY State I am still a New Yorker at heart, a booster of the Big Apple and vitally interested in your topic, even from this great distance!
Services that utilize Penn Station consist of through running trains and originating/terminating trains. Originating/terminating trains are ones that have Penn Station as a starting or final destination and may sit for several minutes while passengers board or disembark. Meanwhile, through trains stop at Penn Station for a short time to pick up and drop off passengers before continuing on. The idea of making Penn Station a fully "through running" station was proposed in order to reduce congestion in and around the station, with terminal stations being established nearby for trains that would usually terminate or start in Penn Station.
Bingo to dispensing with the some-day-maybe RPA.
I want to learn stone carving really but I can't find it in my country

Problems in NYC is probably multi fold,: boiler operators are custodial staff; cookie-cutter approach to system design; apathy. You would think they would have some very clever and experienced boiler technicians working for BOE and others city agencies.
Home many HVAC techs understand steam systems today? Very few.
Delightful trick for casting the new Castrad radiators. Great illustration from the Chicago worlds fair. I admire the industry history given. Fun talk!
I can't help feel like this could be kinda interesting if it wasn't presented like a lecture and had better audio...
One of the more interesting subjects to be interested in.
and I thought my little poney incel fans were a niche fangroup. I wouldn't call myself a radiator fan but I do like me a nice piece of warm metal or ceramic in winter.
This was really beautiful to watch, thank you
Is anyone else surprised how many women are involved in this organization? At least at the leadership level. I thought women were about 2% or less of the entire industry.
Wonderful, inspirational photography.
I wanna thank Dan and everyone at the GSMT for putting this together. I have a thing for steam heating and enjoy constantly learning about it. I was in for a pleasant suprise yesterday during the orientation when i connected the dots. The last name Holohan didnt hit me right away until your brother spoke about you. Then bam! I said in my head the following...... O shoot! The steam guy, the steam god, the one and only Dan Holohan. As if i didnt already feel privileged to have enrolled and be accepted in lol
Wonderful presentation!

If we eliminate all recycling with exception to metals 'aluminum, copper, stainless, ect' it would streamline collection & have a huge improvement on litter and loose plastics, ect.. landfills are a clean, safe, energy environment when done properly. Then the methane gas will provide clean energy for years
Recycling has a far more negative impact on environmental health of a large city
I did that for our Jewish neighborhood in Pittsburgh... they bring a bunch of trash & burn stuff. Im catholic so i didn't understand what they doing
Wonderful!

Very nice description. I look forward to seeing the building very soon. It was great to hear about the school. And, I’m not surprised hearing about education in your forefront. I have attended a few of your lectures this year and found them quite interesting. Thank you‼️
Also about the 1918-19 flu was shown later that more deaths were attributed to bacterial pneumonia from wearing breathing inhibitors/masks than the flu. Love listening to Dan as I'm a licensed steam fitter, more industrial than commercial now.
What a fantastic and satisfying presentation. I understand when he said You cant help but feel a connection to these old buildings. It’s something special to be able to see and touch the same relics our forefathers did. They were hardened by toil but they generally had hearts of gold.
Interesting history. But the dead pan delivery off a script, not notes, makes it drag a bit.
". . . pored over books about how heating systems . . ." I'd hate to think that Mr. Holohan "poured [something] over" those books. 😉 Unfortunately, I'm having to replace my old house's 50+-year-old boiler and yes, it replaced a coal system. I'd have LOVED to have it repaired but couldn't get anyone old enough to evaluate it beyond its suddenly impaired state. Ah, well--its replacement will supposedly be more efficient.
