40:00 the melting point of lead is 600+ degrees F, 300+ C. No lead got into the food from heating the cans At 212F, 100C the cans would have exploded before any lead melted

Several things are missing. The Spanish declared war on the Dutchies. Portugal became part of the habsburg Empire. So the Portugees also became the enemies of the Dutchies. At first the VOC behaved. When they gotten a certain monoply they became arrogant. Greedy. VOC=Verenigde Oost Indische Compagnie. Aka Vergaan Onder Corrupte (1800)=Went under Through Corruption.

@10:30 "There was no way the English were going to allow anyone other than an Englishman to discover the Northwest Passage, let alone an Irishman." 1.And yet, the man who led the first completion of the Northwest Passage was Captain Robert McClure...another middle-class irishman, no higher in class than Francis Crozier! McClure would be given the parliamentary reward and a knighthood for the feat in 1854. Granted, it was partly by sledge, and not quite by design....but the point is, Irish birth, even middle class ("bog") Irish birth, was not a barrier per se to advancement in the 19th century Royal Navy. Indeed, several Admirals of the Fleet were Irish! 2. In fact, Crozier *was* offered command of the Expedition. After Ross and Parry had turned down the command, Lord Haddington, First Lord of the Admiralty, privately sounded out Crozier about taking the job. Crozier, in the throes of depression, decided to turn down the job, too. He wrote to Ross, his best friend, about it: "In truth, I sincerely feel I am not equal to the hardship. I am, in truth, still of opinion as to my own unfitness to lead. You, on that subject as well as all others, know my whole mind." (Michael Smith, Captain Francis Crozier: Last Man Standing? (The Collins Press), Ch. 14) After Franklin was given the command, Crozier changed his mind and agreed to serve as his deputy. Sadly, he would end up with the job anyway -- in the worst possible circumstances.

I think the lead dripped down the can while being soldered because the melting point of lead is 327.5°C. Water can’t get any hotter than 100°C so the lead wouldn’t melt while boiling. Small detail. Great videos! 😊

Very emotional review thankyou. At sea is normally u get on with it as a I am a yatch sailor motors are only considered auxiliaries. Sadly ships today and life bats only have auxiliaries without the means to Dury rig in a crisis. The skipper made a mistake, but on sailing ships a canvas or two would prevent auxiliary7 engine failure foundering.. perhaps more lessons need learning. Motor ships are not the best at all times nomatter the weather. Old wind jammer skippers could easily explain a get out of this sinario. Sorry too of so many lost it remains tragic!

I've seen were Fitzjames was the 3rd/4th choice, with Crozier being the former/latter. In either instance Crozier WAS officially offered the position and "graciously declined." After all that Franklin was asked. This is the first time hearing Crozier was skipped due to being Irish. While it makes sense for the era; my statement still stands. 6:45 Also, he Commanded HMS Terror on both, the Ross and Franklin Expedition. Erebus was commanded by Ross and then Fitzjames.

I think that given the strange nature of the note and where it was left, along with what’s known about the extent of their lead poisoning, and that it would mean every man on board an already insane and cooped up ship would be more violent, less logical, and clearly something happened among the men that wasn’t purely starvation. There was cannibalism at some point, but beyond that it seems almost impossible there wasn’t mutiny or assault or some sort of doom during a wintering. The dynamic on Baird must have been skewed, Captain old head booteater was probably a bit of a dickhead as per usual as well especially given how his second in command was Irish and sorta more accomplished than him. Combine this with Francis likely being a torn apart man mentally feeling that he can never fully prove himself as a sailor, and hasn’t settled down with the love of his life… he probably went insane and led some violent ditch to just try and get out. They must have known they were going crazy. They must have realized something wasn’t right, they probably wanted to abandon the ships even if it meant dying. I seriously imagine that there had to have been a move in May, maybe even far earlier.

Crazy idea: The Boat skeletons and related others were results of an earlier expedition of 1847 and the deceased were part of the losses reported in the Victory Point Note update? Could also explain the desertion of the ships - Crozier's plan could have been a combination of "hunt in force" and creating supply caches, to be abandoned hastily after the ice thawed and Terror at least was re-manned?

Appreciate this, but mostly for the visual content, to be frank. The perspective is one that’s dated very badly, outside of circles which aren’t either communist or Islamist in orientation. Not to mention the weird & appalling silliness & hypocrisy of an English - speaking white Australian, of all possible people, taking every opportunity to vilify & mock the VOC !
