Unveiling the Leica M2 and M3: Vintage Magic?
Enjoyed the video. I don't see any info about the film and settings used in your example photos, something I would use to learn more about film today. I haven't shot with film in decades and am trying to find "the look" for me. I know the processing has a lot to do with it but also the film you choose, correct?
Thank you for your comment and question! Yes definitely the type of film selected has a big impact on the image produced. I think also the lens goes a long way to creating the look. You are correct also in that settings can alter the image with how it is exposed. This is a great idea for a video on settings, and I can share my tips for this on film cameras. My main tip would be you can generally match your shutter speed to the ISO of the film, so say ISO 100 film, your shutter speed would be 125th of a second, for ISO 400 film it would be 500th of a second, or I would usually use 250th of a second, and then alter your aperture to get correct exposure. But of course that all depends on the type of camera being used. I have a recent video showing Kodak Portra images that will give an idea what that film stock looks like. I also have one video on Fuji Superia Venus 800 which is an expired film but absolutely beautiful colours. Stay tuned I will have some more on film photography tips. Have a great day!
Which is better Portra 400 or 800?
In my view you can't go wrong with either. Portra 400 is perhaps more versatile and handles overexposure and underexposure quite well, but Portra 800 is nice for the extra ISO speed. It show a bit more grain though but overall the difference is minor I think. The main decision might be based on the price. Portra 800 seems to be more expensive these days unfortunately. Both have beautiful Portra colours!
Check out the full video linked for more insights into the amazing M3!
Whats the last song?
It's a Korean song from Capcut editing software. The title is: 너는 나 사랑하니? It translates to 'Do you love me?' It's a beautiful song.
Nice review of an old classic which at 70 set the form for all later Leica M’s both film and digital. So Leitz got it right with the M3. Think you didn’t mention that the early M3’s were double stroke. With my M3 and M2’s I always double stroke the advance. For me it works best and I can keep my eye in the view finder. Many years ago, an old Leica salesman told me that the double stroke M3’s were the best M’s ever made. Also heard that the M3’s ranger finder were more complex than subsequent M’s. One word of caution is that I heard that earlier M3’s may have issues with prism separation, but there are still some technicians who can fix them. Enjoy your M3, been enjoying mine bought used in the 60-early 70’s and with only a CLA or two still is a great shooter.
Thank you so much! Yes the M3 is an amazing camera. You are right I didn't mention about the double stroke v single stroke versions. I also got so used to the double stroke I now also double stroke my Leica M2. It actually is quite easy to do single handed I find. Keep enjoying your M3 and thanks for your comments. Much appreciated :)
Very Nice 👍🏻
Thank you so much!

I'd go for a Leica m6 TTL please. Keep up the videos!
Thanks so much! Great choice with the TTL. It has the bigger shutter speed dial that turns the more logical way.
If anyone is keen to see a video on the history of the various Leica barnack or Leica iii models let me know. Have a great day!
Fuji recipe is shared at 2:07. Enjoy!
I should add Light Lens Lab have produced some other lenses too, including a 50mm f1.2, 50mm f2, 28mm f2.8, and just announced production of replica of the 50mm f2 rigid summicron lens.
All photos are taken on 35mm film. Film cameras used: Leica M2, Leica M3, Canon AE1 Program, Ricoh GR1
How do you find using the M3 with a 35mm lens? Do you just use the edge of the viewfinder or a separate finder?
Hi! I sometimes use a 35mm viewfinder - the one designed for the Leica X1/X2. But I mostly just use the whole window in the Leica M3 as an estimate of about a 40mm view and know that I will get a bit extra in the frame than what I see through there. If not needing to be super precise, it works fine that way. Thanks for the comment.
Beautiful colors
Thank you! Yes the colors are amazing. I love that Fuji look.
Great combo on the lens + film. I have a few of these left in the freezer. I shoot it at 500 iso for best results.
Yes I agree and would definitely err on the side of over-exposing. It certainly is the best roll of colour film I've shot...I just love the colours. I just wish Fuji kept producing film.
Beautiful shots. How did you meter them?
Thank you! I use sunny 16 most of the time. I usually lean toward overexposing and find if I estimate 1 stop over the correct exposure on colour film it tends to come out quite well. It of course depends what look you are going for, but in general I'd say aiming for 1 stop over will provide greater detail in the negative without blowing the highlights to any great degree. On a sunny day I tend to set the aperture to f8 so I can zone focus and on a 35mm lens or 28mm lens know I'm getting basically from a meter or so to 10 meters in focus and that way the metering and focus is locked in and ready for when something comes in the scene. Thanks for watching!
Fantasic video, and perspective ! Love the Rega ? as well :)
Thank you so much!

Thanks for review. Had a scuffed black one for some years. Has great colours and rendering
Thank so much! Yes really nice rendering. I like the colours a lot. The black ones are harder to find, but they do pop up every now and again. I wish one day to try the 21mm Ricoh out. It seems to have very similar rendering.
@@shanecaut1063 i think on digital the vignetting is more noticeable but it doesn’t bother me … the 21 not sure how well it plays with digital
@@simonkimber1152 I do agree. I'd say the vignette would be more pronounced on digital. On film, I've never really noticed it as a problem, but I like that look on a wider lens anyway. What digital are you shooting usually?

Wonderful lens, I only wish it was cheaper, guess I'll stick to my cheap soviet lenses ahahah
Nothing wrong with the soviet lenses :) Yes the Ricoh is not super cheap but thankfully hasn't risen a lot in price in recent years which is a plus. Thanks for watching!
💯🇹🇷⭐️👍 I have 1 of this F3 device, it is very clean, it is for sale, if anyone is interested, there is a video on my UA-cam channel.
How much are you asking for it?
The canon lens is an underrated one. Sharper than most newer lenses and has the character to go with it. Beautiful cameras!
Absolutely! These days more creators are looking for character lenses in place of edge to edge performance and the canon lenses from the 1950s have that mix of character with sharpness like you say. Thanks for viewing!
Hey Shane, your video popped up on my feed. I guess UA-cam knows I like Leicas and 35mm lenses! Enjoyed this one, as one of my favourite setup is the Summaron 3,5/35mm on my IIIc with an external finder; it's so liberating to just use it as a point and shoot! Also, nice videos!
Thanks so much! The summaron is a great little lens and with a IIIc would make a very compact set up too. Do you use the rangefinder on the IIIc much for focussing or generally zone focus? I have a Leica III from 1934 which I will show as well. They are amazing little cameras.
@@shanecaut1063 I still use the rangefinder with that setup, but mostly out of habit. Trying to remind myself that I can pretty much just leave it at one focus setting and just shoot; typically using ISO 400 film, so on a sunny day outdoors it's never below f8 anyway.
@@thew0nster Yes sunny days and higher speed film certainly make it easier to nail focus. I'm guessing your summaron is the earlier version, being screw mount. I think that is the one to get, being more compact that the M versions. Keep enjoying it!
What could be the price on both of these cameras??
As they are both repaints, they probably sit around the $2,000 USD mark I would estimate. The problem these days is the wait-time on repaints from some of the more established places, like Kanto camera in Japan. I was fortunate to get the M2 repainted from Camerworks UK before their demand also increased. If not wanting to wait year or so for the repaint, I'd look for one already painted but check the quality of the re-paint and ensure was done to a good standard down the brass. Thanks for the question.
