The Sukkur Hyderabad Motorway (M6) [حیدرآباد سکھر موٹروے] is a significant infrastructure project in Pakistan, stretching 306 km and featuring six lanes. This motorway connects Hyderabad in the south to Sukkur in the north, marking the first motorway in the province of Sindh. Passing through seven districts-Jamshoro, Hyderabad, Matiari, Nawabshah/Shaheed Benazirabad, Naushahro Feroze, Khairpur, and Sukkur-this project covers 7,800 acres of acquired land.

The motorway will end at Naro Canal and connect to M5 (Multan Sukkur Motorway) through the Rohri Interchange.
Importance of M6
The M6 motorway is crucial for Pakistan's transport industry. The country's road network is the backbone of its transportation system, with 92% of city-to-city transport conducted via roads. Approximately 80% of Pakistan's population lives around the Indus River basin, making the national highway N-5 critical as it carries 35% of the country's freight traffic. Motorways were planned to develop high-speed connectivity along the north-south corridor, linking seaports in the south with the northern border, connecting to Afghanistan, Central Asia, and China. The M6 is the final crucial link in this series of motorways.
Historical Background
The project received its first approval in 2016 under Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) initially won the contract to build the motorway under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) agreement. However, subsequent governments canceled previous bids due to allegations of corruption, leading to a new tender process.
Recent Developments
In December 2022, the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreement was signed under the PDM government, but financial closures were not met, leading to contract cancellations. Despite these setbacks, recent developments in the May 2024 JCC meeting led by Minister Ahsan Iqbal show renewed efforts to initiate the project.
