I found Alabama firing Mike Shula a disgrace !!!!!! Sure Saban was a hired gun but the only tie he had to the program was $$$$$$$. In fact, college football is now ruined by money $$$$$. It once was so great for working dudes and now its just like everything else.

@@leng1212 Mike inherited that disaster Dubose left him. You wanted your titles and you got them but you left tire tracks over a true Alabama man. Saban was the best. If given the same money in 07 by Tennessee - he would have enjoyed whipping Alabama once a year every year and not thought twice about. Th game is ruined anyway so to hell with it

Mike shouldn’t have taken the Bama job. Program was in midst of probation due to coaches before him and he was 3rd coach in a three year 1:56 span. Roster attrition was 60%. Yet, he had a 10 win season and a couple of .500 seasons with decimated roster.

The only good thing about Shula is, if we’d never had the dark period that he brought us, we’d have never have gotten Saban who brought us the second golden age of Alabama football during his time. And he paved the way for the new coach, Kalen Deboer

That’s an awful comment. Mike was a very good quarterback at Bama and He came to coach Alabama at a time when nobody would take the job, because of the probation looming over the program. Mike was playing at Bama when I was attending Alabama. If you past Cornelius Bennett on the campus, he wouldn’t give you the time of day. If you walked past Mike Shula in Solomon’s or out on the campus somewhere, he would shake your hand and greet you with a smile as he said, hello. He would blush and say, thank you, when you complimented him on beating Auburn. Mike was a great guy and I hate that he gets abused in ridiculous comment sections for absolutely no reason whatsoever. I grew up watching Coach Bryant in the late 60s and 70s at Alabama and was fortunate enough to attend all home games in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa and travel to most destinations that were within driving distance. I am thankful for what Coach Saban did at Alabama and it’s been amazing to watch and I’m hopeful Coach Kalen DeBoer will have much success at Alabama. But, could you have a little bit of respect for a man who came back to his Alma Mater, when he was forced to learn on the job as a first time head coach at the University of Alabama. Something that none of the other mentioned coaches had to do. If Tyrone Prothrow doesn’t break his leg against Florida. I believe we beat LSU and Auburn that season so, who knows. Alabama‘s probation sections were real and devastating. Maybe Coach Shula wasn’t ready for the job but, he took it when nobody else would touch it with a 10 foot pole and I think he did a pretty damn good job.

It's regrettable that Mike has not ever gotten a chance to be HC at another locale. I feel being a coaches' son in some ways might have been detrimental to that goal. My dad was a bank president and despite having two finance degrees I was sort of overlooked when he stepped down, so it's sort of that principle to me. As a player he was a favorite, and will always be remembered for the Georgia and Auburn wins his junior year. Circumstances in 2003 (no spring practice), Croyle injury in '04, and late season collapse in '06 contributed to his demise. Always heard he was great tactician, but would become more conservative in games. I still would have loved to have seen him succeed. And hope he will yet get a chance to lead a team sometime in the future. I know I'll be cheering for him regardless of where he is.

As an Alabama fan, I really wanted Mike to succeed in Tuscaloosa as our HC. He definitely had some obstacles; not being able to go through spring training in 2003 due to being hired after the firing of Mike Price; the reduction of scholarships due to NCAA sanctions; the injury to starting QB Brodie Croyle in 2004; and sadly, his inexperience as a HC due to never having been a HC. There were some good things that happened; the 10-2 season in 2005 was wonderful but what has been unsung was the number of players that were recruited by Shula and staff that were part of Nick Saban's 2009 NC Team. QB Greg McElroy, OL Drew Davis, LB Eryk Anders, DL Brandon Deaderick, DB Javier Arenas, Punter P.J. Fitzgerald, PK Leigh Tiffin.

That's why when people pray for Bama's downfall in football, all I can do is laugh, because looking back on their football history, they've practically won constantly, even with coaches who didn't ultimately win championships there (having good winning seasons). Quite literally the worst years of Bama's football history was primarily during times that the team suffered from lost scholarships and all. Even with Mike Dubose being one of the worst coaches in Bama history, even he had a 10-3 season when he was there

@danielcrowe9324 that's the point of being a head coach...getting good players. Many of Shula's recruits contributed to Saban's 2009 championship with them. Point being is that it takes BOTH good players and good coaches to be successful. If one or the other is missing, then usually the team won't go all the way. There's exceptions ofc

Donna and Tubby were in line right behind us. No one would leave him alone. My granddaughter walked up to him and said I rode Big Thomas today. She was so proud of that. First words out of his mouth was who's that. Donna said oh Orlando you know The tank Engine! They sat down right beside us and talked to us just like family. A truly wonderful man and woman there.
