Teaching the Future of Spine: Research, Motion Preservation, & Improving Care, Jeffrey Goldstein, MD
Ep. 13 Teaching the Future of Spine: Research, Motion Preservation, & Improving Care, Jeffrey A. Goldstein, MD
In this episode of The Spine Pod, co-hosts Courtney Schutze and Brady Riesgraf sit down with Dr. Jeffrey A. Goldstein, a globally recognized expert in orthopedic spine surgery and Director of the Spine Surgery Fellowship and Education programs at NYU Langone. With over 30 years of clinical and research experience, Dr. Goldstein is a staunch advocate for conservative, patient-first treatment plans. His patient-centered philosophy focuses on functional outcomes and prioritizing long-term health of every patient he treats.
Dr. Goldstein also discusses his commitment to ongoing innovation, especially in the area of motion preservation. Dedicated to advancing the field, he takes on a dual role as a pioneer in new technologies and a teacher, training residents and fellows in the latest techniques to carry his patient-first legacy forward. He has been a key leader across multiple clinical studies, including being a trainer for both cervical and lumbar artificial discs in the commercialization of ProDisc, as well as being the national PI for 3Spine’s MOTUS Lumbar Total Joint Replacement IDE study. In addition to motion preservation, Dr. Goldstein continues to drive patient-care forward through the use of supplementary emerging technologies, including minimally invasive surgery (MIS) and robotics.
In this episode, listeners will learn about:
• The history of how spine care has changed over the past 30 years
• The entire function spinal unit, and the role of the facets and the disc in the mobility and stability of the spine
• How motion preserving technologies are becoming mainstream options for treating leg and/or back pain in the correctly indicated patient
• The convergence of enabling technologies and how MIS, robotics, and motion preserving implants are coming together to improve patient outcomes
• The importance of conservative care and exhausting non-operative treatment options prior to receiving spine surgery
• Where the future of spine care is headed and the newest technologies entering the spine market
Dr. Goldstein has been a leading surgeon across the spine industry for more than 20 years, being recognized as a top doctor in America by multiple institutions, including Castle Connolly, New York Magazine, Becker’s, and Newsweek. Aside from being recognized by sources and peers, he has also been the past president of ISASS, one of the largest spine conferences in the world, and also holds the title of professor of both orthopedic and neurosurgery at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine. With his accolades in teaching, leadership, and innovation, Dr. Goldstein has had a remarkable impact across the spine community since his inception into medicine.
This episode explores how Dr. Goldstein’s work has not only shaped his practice but also the broader field of spine surgery, primarily through his dedicated contributions to motion preservation and patient-centered innovations. Whether you’re a provider, patient, or industry professional, this episode provides vast insights into the technologies improving patient outcomes and what’s on the horizon for the future of spine surgery.

hi doc kim
What options do patients that are suffering today have if they don’t want to sacrifice their motion with a fusion. For example; a single level degen. spondy?
Hi Bill, there is a great website resource called www.motionsurgery.com that has a list of different motion-preserving alternatives to fusion. We recommend you check it out!
Thanks so much for having me again!!! Can't wait until next time!!!

Awwww. Come on Dr Ament. You know I had 20 opinions. I had them graphed on a spreadsheet! It was not just distrust, it was educating myself more and more to find the right fit. If I listened to any of the first handful, my outcome would have been very different.
Great pod thx guys
Great talk, bravo. Segmental alignment and motion preservation system have to connect! Let’s also talk about data, research revolution by Decentralized Science #DeSci.
Enjoyed the podcast and was highly relevant as surgeon has recommended multi level fusion surgery for my neck and I’m investigating alternative options
I would really love to have an appointment with Dr. Siva. I want to talk with someone who embraces the possibility of motion preserving procedures. I've been told I need a four level ACDF. I'm worried about fusion leading to adjacent joint disease and the need for a subsequent surgery. Question: I've seen on your Jefferson page that you utilize tube access to the spine. Is this similar to the procedure that is done at Deuk Spine Center in Florida? That procedure is very enticing given the lack of fusion, low blood loss, low tissue damage and shorter recovery time.
Dr Siva's the GOAT 🐐
My favorite episode so far!! It’s incredible hearing about the work that’s being done to improve spine care. Someone in my family had spine surgery and it took almost 2 years to get to the right surgeon that correctly diagnosed him. I wish more talk was done on patient centered care and motion preserving options were available back then!!
Ignoring Atlas Dislocations leaves People Hung Up with Distorted Irregular Spinal Growth. The Atlas has to be Unlocked for the Normal Growth Pattern to Return. You are just another half brained humpback like everyone else. You can't unlock yours. What makes you think You are an Authority on the Spine?
The Best. Dr Pat is so smart, but able to take complex subject, such as spine biomechanics and break it down to something that we can all understand. He is certainly one of the worlds authorities on this subject and has influenced my career unmeasurable. My initial studying of spine mobility, and how important it is to returning the patient back to their best possible clinical outcomes, was completely inspired by Dr. Pat. Even though short in statue, I am standing on the shoulders of this giant
Dr. Pat is the best! I’ve known him for a long time in the industry and I’m glad he’s getting a platform to talk about everything he’s contributed to spine care. Motion preservation is finally here, we don’t fuse any other joint in the body other than the spine, I’m glad someone is finally talking about this!!
Looks kewl. Wish I could have downloaded it. Have had an ACDF, C5-6, in 2019. Hope I never need another spinal surgery. The nerve pain before I had the surgery was hectic. Lately I've had warning 'lightening bolts' coming from my neck (referred pain to near shoulder area). 🙏
Amazing podcast and information. I love the format and look inside a gifted surgeons passion for life, profession, and patient care. Cheers.
Do you want a 50-55% improvement in pain and function, still dealing with stiffness and knowing you will have a significant risk for a second or third repeat surgery, or have a 80+% improvement in pain and function with some motion preserving surgeries? The bonus of motion preserving surgery is also avoiding much of the stiffness of fusion and markedly decreasing your risk for repeat surgeries. No brainer!
We believe all patients deserve motion-preserving options for their leg and back pain.
Awesome start to the series. Enjoyed the deep dive into Dr. K. Truly a brilliant guy with a genuine commitment to patients and motion preserving spine surgery.
Thanks for watching Susan! Glad to have you here!
