I used to know a Japanese girl. She got bullied heavily. Bullied is putting it mildly, she outright got assaulted. She was even forced into her locker, and left there for hours, if not overnight, before she was found. It was so terrible, that her parents took her back to Japan. She developed a deep hatred for Americans. Fast forward maybe 4 years or so. I'm working as a Game Moderator for a multi-language online game, but is operated by an English community. An incident occurs where this girl was the victim of malicious conduct by another player. Involved scaming and item theft, fairly typical stuff for an online game. I work with her on the incident and eventually the matter is settled. She later tells me, that she was really impressed with how respectfully I treated her, and she wanted to participate in a community project we had going. A project where we were working on translating Japanese text into English. For the next couple months, I worked closely with her, helping patch up the holes in her limited English and working with her to translate the materials. All the while I never shamed her or made for of her for her language challenges. I even bought a Japanese to English translaction dictionary for her to help her with communication (This was before machine translations were a thing). Later, she was approaching the end of high school but was struggling with an English class she was in. She was failing it. She had a final exam coming up that was going to determine if she got a mediocre grade, or failed the class entirely. She asked for my help as she was puzzled by her books. I agreed and she scanned her books for me. Great Scott, her text book was difficult even for me, I had to read it 6 times before I understood what it was talking about, It was that poorly written. She would get up late at night and sneak onto the computer so she could study with me. For weeks I tutored her. She took the test, and a few days later told me she had blown her teacher away because she scored the highest in the class. I believe she got a 98%. I'll never forget what she told me next. "I hated foreigners (referring more specifically to Americans), I thought they were cruel and despicable. But after meeting you, and all the kindness you've shown me, I've re-evaulated my stance on that. I know now that not all (Americans) are like that. I never could have made it this far without you." She would go on to college, and unfortunately I eventually lost contact with her sometime after she went to a univerisity. I still think about her often, and hope one day I will hear from her again. Just as I helped her, I learned from her as well, and it really brought to light for me just how terribly Japanese, and Asian in general, people get treated in America. And it really showed me how even something as small as showing respect and a little kindness to someone, can have a significant if not life-changing affect on them. Years later, I went to college myself. And my entrance exam was "Describe how you had an influence on another culture." So I wrote an essay about helping a young Japanese girl with the language barrier she was struggling with, and helping her with her Engish exam to graduate from High School. A couple weeks after writing that essay, I received my acceptance letter, and I too was attending a university.

Once in high school I had a test the next day and I hadn't studied anything, NOTHING, I hadn't opened a book, I hadn't taken notes from the classes, but, in the test I got an A+ without studying, I never really studied anything (only the grammar of the languages ​​I studied), at most I took notes of things that I knew I would never remember by heart right away like formulas or definitions.
