Thank you so much for sharing a simple, yet great idea! saved me money and I can quit wasting time watching "influencers" make their clickbait videos.
You are so welcome! I agree with you!
I have a Welsummer with a big comb and won't fit in a 3" hole.
My best friend, Loved this video. Looking forward to see more. Awesome... Full watched.
I made these and they worked well the problem is squirrels got in and wasted the food all over the ground. I had my buckets hanging. What can I do to keep the squirrels out?
Where are you keeping your buckets? If it's in your coop/run, how are they getting in?
Unfortunately, Harbor Freight doesn't do the 20% off coupons anymore
Memorial Day weekend 20%, Memorial Day 25% - 2022
@@jimwalt True. I was very disappointed when they stopped honoring the ones you could bring in on your phone.
How do you keep the squirrels out? This is similar to the type we have but the squirrels keep getting in and leaving food all over the ground and my chickens are lazy and won't eat it off the ground for some reason. Lazy girls!
It's inside the run. So no squirrel problems.
@@jimwalt so is ours but the squirrels dug holes and get into the run. Makes me so mad.
So how long before you had problems?
Still works to this day!!!!
@@jimwalt but how long before you had problems?
None at all ever. It's an automatic car antenna that is inside the coop. So just like on a car (20yrs ago) they work 24/7/365.
@@jimwalt "So just like on a car (20yrs ago) they work 24/7/365." That's not even close to being true. Those antennas are made to work (motor ON to raise or lower the antenna) when the radio is turned on (only the initial turning on) and when the radio is turned off. So even if you use you car every single day , the antenna is ONLY "working" for less than a minute for the entire day. The relay inside is the only thing that is on when the radio is on. And even then it is not even close to being 24/7/365. "So just like on a car" That part in of itself is not true either. This is NOT just like a car. It is being put under way more stress than it is designed to do. Hence why I am asking. Last, these antennas break down under the best of conditions. That is why replacement antennas are sold. Again, Hence why I am asking..
@@jimwalt you do see how completely wrong your comment is?
THANK YOU~ ! I needed this info. Chickens are wasting food terribly.... but not no more! :- ) May God bless.
Do you set it on the ground or elevate it? How many buckets would you suggest for 14 chickens? I assume you keep the lid on when you use it, correct? Thank you!
Also do suggest the bakery bucket to same money from buying one or is there another reason for that type? Thank you.
@@tammycraine7493 bakery bucket because free. Yes top on bucket. I have mine elevated on 2 cinder blocks so directly head height. We have 10 chickens with 1 bucket that has 2 feeding ports. I fill 2x per week. Works great!!!
@@jimwalt awesome! Thank you! Have mice been a problem and if the lid is on do you still need to have it in a covered area or can it be outside? I am definitely going to build this soon.... Well, ask my husband to build it!
@@tammycraine7493 no mice here fortunately. Ours is in covered area which works well. I have also heard of people making these out of garbage pails for those with bigger flocks.
Hi again👋! My husband built me a chicken feeder like yours today! Instead of setting it on blocks we are going to hang it on the wall. How many inches from the ground is the bottom of your holes? If you could make it lower or higher would you? If yes, in your opinion what would be the PERFECT height for the bottom of the holes to the ground be? Thank you!
Thanks, bro!
I only see schedule 35 on Home Depot website. Can you link one?
Got mine at Menards. Try there or Lowe's if HD doesn't have them.
Holy smokes. For real?! This is blowing my entire mind. How many spots do you do per bucket? Does it matter?
Max i would do is 4. My bucket has 2.
How long did it last?
How did you wire that antenna to the plug? I like your idea but I already bought a 120 to 12v converter that plugs in. It has a pos eg block and was going to go direct to that with the remote and power wires then plug the single neg off the antenna to the neg on the block and use a timer on the converter box plug. Looks like you cut off a 120\12 plug and used that and I wish I would have seen this before I bought the converter but too late so I'm gonna work with what I have. Thanks
the transmission pulley it's making contact with the silver lower panel. I will cut a square hole so the pulley can't touch the panel.
Thank you for the tip Leo D, but we got rid of this washer a few days after I posted this (more than 3 years ago).
ok Jim, but what was the problem to fix my washer it is that same noise.
I have all my stuff and have tested it. All i have to do is install it. Wish me luck. Any idea about whether the antenna draws much voltage when it's extended (12V is present, but motor isn't running)? I ask because I'm running mine on batteries.
How did it go?
@@AztecWarrior69_69 I no longer use batteries. I have constant 110v power and an inverter
@@deasttn That's one of the many problems of using car antennas for anything else besides what they are made for. They are expensive if you buy them new or get them used at lower cost but no way to know if they will last. Low cost ones have quality issues. Mounting them is always a messy chore. And the wiring is easy for those who know how it actually work but gives others a hard time. I wish I had seen you comment long ago before you wasted money and time on running AC power to the coop. Not that having AC is a bad thing. I would have shown you this. It is almost the same thing as wiring an antenna. Give me a bit and I'll upload one specific to car antennas. drive.google.com/open?id=1fnr3v8cMdtJwfZNiPNfD6e5pLXNL-Vdw This video is how they work at the basic level. ua-cam.com/video/urzCKlB3T08/v-deo.html
@@deasttn Here is how you could have wired it so that it would not be powered the whole time. Only when needed. drive.google.com/open?id=1Is96mIaHSdkQAIzLechRFFAHGxur6DcJ

We ended up purchasing a new one at Lowe's at a great price for the Memorial Day sale. Then we posted the old one (the GE) on Craigslist for $80 and had 4 people immediately want to purchase it. So it is gone and hopefully will work well for it's new owner.

Awesome and cheap. Do they still had power antenna around.
Fantastic project! Thanks for sharing.
No. You need two. One is always "hot" the other turns on/off with the timer.
thank you very much. I read the article writes by “project manager" which is really interesting. I have a question: can one make the assembly with only one power battery?
yes
Sure. Glad to help. Check out ALL the details at backyardchickens DOTcom and search for the thread "automatic-chicken-coop-door-for-only-5-bucks-with-a-radio-antenna-from-a-junkyard"
hello Jim, thank you for this video. could you to us poster the electric diagram of your assembly?
Don't
This is a very good idea, great job!
It really isn't. There are so many drawbacks that it being cheap, doesn't make up for it.
Thank you for posting this! I was at the show the next night in Lynchburg, VA.
Glad to post this. I also have a couple Mercy Me videos (In a Blink of an Eye, and I can only imagine) that I hope to post soon. I was actually one of the drivers for the event. I took Bebo to the Rite Aid on the corner in my car! He's a really nice guy and down to earth! We talked about the Britney song and some other stuff. Hats off to Bebo
