@@lurkerrekrul totally get this sentiment but personally I came to appreciate Steam and GOG on account of one being a decent service compared to most of its competition and the other letting you download updated DRM free copies of games you purchased. Digital has its problems especially with preservation and ownership but it ain't all bad.

@@ThePeteriarchy To be clear, I have nothing against digital distribution in general, I just hate how it's done in practice, with the exception of GOG. If you're on a console, anything you download, such as whole games, or patches and DLC for retail games, will be locked to that console. If it ever dies and you buy a replacement, any "backups" you made are worthless because it's a different console and it thinks you're trying to pirate the content. Yes, you can re-download it, IF it's still available, and IF the console in question is still supported. I know the Remastered version was released in a retail edition for consoles (which I don't own, and which are increasingly being designed with timebombs in them, so that they will eventually become unusable), but those versions also need patches, which can only be obtained by connecting the console to an online service. When it comes to services like Steam and Origin, not only is it a distribution system, but it's also online DRM with the ability to brick your games if they ever decide that you've violated the terms of service. Plus, the windows port of Burnout Paradise: Remastered (which my current system can't even run) has Denuvo DRM, which is notorious for hampering performance. Unfortunately, while most every other Denuvo protected game has been cracked, that one never has been. I doubt it's from a lack of ability, I think it just didn't get noticed. And being from EA, the chances of it ever showing up on GOG are slim. t used to be that if you bought a console game, you got the entire game and could own it for life. Or if you bought a computer game, after you installed it, you could go online and download any patches the game might require, which you were then free to archive. Today, you buy a console game and it's probably seriously broken until it downloads a ton of patches, and if it's a Windows game, you have to go through activation, and let the game itself download the patches, etc. It seems like you can't play any of today's games without being tied to a remote server for something. :(
